Repairing surfboard dings on a surfboard made with polyurethane (PU) foam and polyester resin. I used Q-Cell and resin to fill the ding and then applied two-layer patches of 4oz fiberglass cloth with laminating resin and then sealed it with sanding resin. I sanded the repairs progressively up to 400 grit sandpaper to match the sanded finish of the board.

Awesome vid bro, just answered my queries re hot coating and what it is and when to apply. Just been doing a heap of repairs on my longboard that I've been putting off and just starting to sand all the lay ups. Gotta go and buy some sanding resin or wax /styrene to add to my laminating resin. This was an absolutely informative vid, thanks for putting it up. 😎🤙

Very cool video on repairing dings on a surfboard. And that is a nice shipping container, but it looks smaller than what you were using before. It looked like your son was helping by leveling the ground for you to put something there in its place. Thanks for the video.

How can you tell whether a board is poly or epoxy? I have an older classic longboard with a 1" ding on the deck. It's slightly yellowed so I assume it's poly, but are there any ways to know for sure?

Nice Job! I have one question though: Please tell me where I‘m wrong! If you sand the epoxy filler flush with the board, then apply two layers of fiberglass you should have a small bump where the new patch is right? If you again sand it flush afterwards, don’t you take away all the new fiberglass as it was „on“ the boards shape? Intuitively I would sand the epoxy filler down so that it is a bit „lower“ than the board. This way I won’t sand all the fiberglass of just to get it flush with the rest again.

Hey mate. When repairing a ding as such, after the fibreglass hardens, do you just sand the edges of where the glass meets the rest of the board, and not the centre area of the patch? I think on my repairs I’ve been sanding the glass patch too far back from sanding the entire patch and not just the edges.
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards 2 жыл бұрын
You only need to sand the edges to make a smoother transition so the rough edges don’t stick up through the hot coat

Great video! Super clear on the process and materials/tools used. For a board with color, where should the dye be added though, the sanding resin or the 2nd round of lamination resin on the cloth? Thanks so much!

I made a surfboard with only laminating resin when I was young. Didn't know why it wouldn't cure, so I filled a spray bottle with catalyst and went to town. It did eventually cure a nice golden yellow.

Nice videos really enjoy learning some things there. I recently did a ring repair on my board and after hitting it a little again it starts to delaminate on a few spots of the repair (the old glass and the new one) do you have an idea why this would happen I sanded it with 100 grit before glassing and cleaned it with a wet cloth since I didn't have acetone
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards 2 жыл бұрын
You probably need to remove more of the fiberglass that has detached from the foam. There was most likely spots you left

Dude can I ask you a question?........If Epoxy resin can be used on both PU and EPS, is there a reason why you would not use Epoxy resin for all board repairs no matter the foam or lamination resin's? Could it be that there are different strength ratios or bonding issues maybe, maybe a cost thing???........I am very curious on this topic, your input would be hugely appreciated......thanks, Andrew
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards Жыл бұрын
Although epoxy can be used on both, its better to match the original resin used for better bonding.
@AEVMU

@@BendheimBoards Epoxy actually bonds better to both types of resin.
@AEVMU
@AEVMU 10 ай бұрын
It is a cost issue, epoxy has gotten very expensive. It is a superior resin in every way and it does in fact bond better to both cured PE and epoxy resin.
@becksisler

if your ding goes through the foam blank, can you just use epoxy resin and filler to get the shape back and then fiberglass after? Or do you have to get some different type of filler for the foam
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you can fill it with resin and q-cell, however if you don't want the repair to be so heavy, you can cut a piece of foam to insert into the hole and then fill and laminate over.

Thanks for the video! Are you adding any polish to finish? If so what are you using? I’m trying to figure out the trick to getting that glossy finish. I’ve tried different types of polish or swirl remover but all of my repairs still come out cloudy. Also, are you doing any repairs with epoxy resin? That’s what I’ve used but I still have lots of trouble with fish eyes
@gyulahohmann3123
@gyulahohmann3123 Жыл бұрын
Try different grit sandpaper, all the way to 1200. Eg; say you did upto 400, so far and its cloudy now, goto the next 4-5 different grits and (wet sand) say, 440,600,800, 1000&1200 worked for me on some tail and nose dings on my last board. Hope that helps 😎🤙

No the glass is damaged and will continue to rip down the seem that it previously ripped on, imagine trying to rip apart a piece of cloth that has no rip and then try ripping one that is precut, much easier on the precut
