Nice video. Thanks for putting it out. That’s a great idea to consider not only the other professional installers like yourself, but the DIY subscribers.

Johnny pease don't consider this trolling but let me clarify. The midnite solar SPD responds in less than 15 ns. Which in length is a little over 12 inches. That is about the length of the wires on the SPD. Not a major concern for wire length because the next closest sensitive device should be yards away through the electrical wiring from the panel. I bought two of these from you (one for each utility panel) due to convenience. Both Home Depot and Lowes carry surge suppressors for electrical panels and I've used several brand for my homes including my rentals for over 20 years. I have never had a surge related device failure. I highly recommend these devices for every home and they are very easy to install.

dobson777a I agree with you Robert and I don’t doubt there are other good brands out there. The installation manual for the SPD says to “avoid excess lead lengths and the need for sharp bends in the wires”. I’m just an avid install Manual reader/follower. The whole reasons for this video was because people always have questions about the blue light ufo things....

LOL. Blue light special! That one got me! Nice presentation. I wonder if these ever fail and send all current to ground making a fire.

I have blown 2 inverters (grid tie) without an SPD installed. I installed one of these in the top of a sub panel (powered strait from the main leads on the main panel) Anyway my inverter faulted out with an ark fault and the breaker for this SPD was tripped. Reset all and running fine now. So I assume I had a power spike on the A/C input side as the solar wasn't that high (cloudy day)

HOWdy G-S-S, You seem to wonder what the difference was between your TWO (2) SPD's that you unboxed & why they were different in appearance the FIRST (1st) SPD was a TYPE-2 SPD the SECOND (2nd) SPD was labeled as a TYPE-1 SPD COOP ...

I always get a charge out of your videos...both in and out...ZAP..POW...ouch..! I should have hooked it up with shorter leads and no sharp bends...

How would this get wired into a 120V AC main panel?
@EdenEchoes
@EdenEchoes 2 жыл бұрын
I was wondering....Wouldn't 120 volts, be OVER the 115-AC version of the SPD, and therefore to protect the 120 Volt AC side of the circut, and avoid damage to the 115 version, wouldn't we need to go with the 300-AC Version of the SPD, since 120 volts AC is between 115 and 300 Volts? Also I think midnite has possibly changed the Part numbers, and the AC&DC Designations of these now days, I know you put this video out 4 years ago?

The 115 would install on the hot and neutral of a circuit. The 300 installs on the two hot legs of a 240 v circuit or service

U always use the midnights. Y? I bought the Eaton ones. Dont remeber back when i was looking y i went with Eaton. My guess is the biggest eaton unit had the most/highest joul protection. Id have to look it up. I use mine on my house grid power/ generator l, no solar yet. Edit just looked it up. Eaton chsp2ultra is the 120/240v Rated at 2820 jouls With clamping of 600v L-N 1000vL-L 800v N-G 600v L-G About $108 at Home depot Midnight mnspd300 is the120/240v Rated at 3130 jouls With a clamping of 775v @$89 So looks like midnight might be slightly better jouls wise. But midnite does have different voltages and for dc eatont doesnt. Mike holms can go pound sand i guess

@GainSolarPower
@GainSolarPower 6 жыл бұрын
dwf dwf you really don’t. I have two because I want a backup/loner for myself and my customers. I’m a prepper so redundancy is always in mind. Also needed the extra inverter for ac coupling. When you ac couple a grid tied inverter to a battery inverter the maximum possible output power of the GTI (inverter handles the solar) exceed 90% of the continuous output power of the battery inverter. Sorry long answer. You don’t need too. I’m just a solar guy with lots of junk!!!
@GainSolarPower
@GainSolarPower 6 жыл бұрын
Oh man I spaced on this question. Thought you were asking why two inverters. You need two spds because inverter chargers have an input from the grid or gen and an output to a load panel.
