I just ordered the book. I’ve been failed time and again by well meaning doctors and surgeons for over thirty years. This has left me at 62 with chronic pain. Ironically, I just watched the old black and white 1950 movie about Dr Semmelweis. I’ve just started PT and I’m combining what I’m taught with exercises I’ve found on your channel. Thank you Matt for all of your great videos and renewing my faith that perhaps I can live, if not pain free, at least get my pain in control.

I appreciate how this information is seriously not reassuring but is delivered in a non shocking way and also how it is on a channel that gives helpful advice and tips🤦🏾‍♂️🙏🏾

This kind of info is no surprise to me at all. Was in medicine for over 31 years. I’ve seen it first hand. I’ve also been in the medical system as a patient. Kudos to these doctors for speaking out. I honestly believe they live in danger.

Thanks for this video. It's good to let people know they have options. My husband once threw his shoulder out and the surgeon insisted that if he didn't have surgery it would just keep popping out of the socket. He was also told he would at best have 70% of his range of motion after the surgery. He went to see a kinesiologist as a second opinion and was given some exercises to strengthen the muscles around the shoulder. That was over 20 years ago and he is great without the surgery.

An honest surgeon offered me a 'BMW' surgery for a meniscus tear. He explained that the surgery would get him a new BMW car and I might get a little short term relief (and would probably be worse in the long term)

as a psychologist, and as any psychologist can tell you, the placebo effect is enourmous - anywhere between 30-100% of the 'therapeutic effect'

It's really hard to do a real clinical trial on a surgical procedure. So this is very interesting. I'm sure surgery is absolutely necessary some of the time, but orthopedic surgeons rely more on their personal experiences and those of their peers, not on falsifiable evidence of effectiveness.

Qualifications: I have a brain and don't accept dogmatic and/or suspicious sounding authoritative proclamations at face value. Authoritative certifications only mean you're able to adhere to some specific group's rules long enough to get rubber stamped. Bio: www.uprighthealth.com/about-upright-health/

@@Uprighthealth My apologies, Matt - I didn't mean to come off sounding rude. It is apparent you know well what you're talking about, so I was genuinely just curious how you developed your skill set. I am equally non accepting/suspicious of 'main stream' health care. Your official bio is impressive, nonetheless. Thank you so much for your videos/ podcast/website (dealing with self-diagnosed 'FAI/weak/tight hips'). I'm feeling much better both physically and mentally, knowing I have some control over my destiny. Keep up the great work!🤩

I have been aware for many years of unnecessary spinal procedures in the USA. In the UK this surgery is rarer because the brakes are applied by the National Health Service being paid for by tax payers. Maybe private practitioners are more keen on invasive surgery?
@Uprighthealth

If you're a private practitioner, you don't get paid unless you do the procedure... 🤔 ...or you gotta do a DIFFERENT procedure...

In the US, there is a lot of collusion between the medical industry and the government, so that even our "government run" medical sector (e.g. Medicare) is full of unnecessary, money- making procedures.

Balancing out this perspective that a proper diagnosis is key. I thought I had SI Joint and FAI. Turns out I have Grade 1 Spondylolisthesis and might need surgical intervention. If it’s truly structural surgery and stabilization is an option.
@Uprighthealth
@Uprighthealth Жыл бұрын
You may want to read the book referenced in this podcast as well as the book called BACK IN CONTROL by spinal surgeon david hanscom and also the book CROOKED: www.cathrynjakobsonramin.com/ Do not so easily put faith in "structural" diagnoses as the history and evidence for them is EXTRAORDINARLY weak.

@@Uprighthealth pain makes you believe funny things. If you could recommend which book I read first, which would you recommend?
@anujbhatia3337
@anujbhatia3337 Жыл бұрын
@@Uprighthealth I just finished reading both books. I now believe that there’s more to pain than the biomechanical view. In my case (Spondylolisthesis) I would argue there is a structural issue. There is a literal fracture at the joint, and that muscles alone can only delay surgery. Maybe and hopefully forever, but I’m putting in the work with PT (including with a McGill practitioner) and still remain cautiously optimistic that I can delay, but not avoid eventual surgery.

The placebo effect is very misunderstood, even by professionals. If placebo has the same effect as surgery, it doesn't mean placebo is a good treatment. It means the surgery is not. Statistically, the "placebo effect" is mostly regression to the mean, and false (even mistakenly false) patient reporting. Patients are more likely to report that a treatment worked in order to please authority (Doctors). There are many other factors that explain the effect, but the idea of placebo being a mind over matter cure is so pervasive and misunderstood that I'm just spittin in the wind now. 🙃
@jackoninny
@jackoninny Жыл бұрын
btw... I'm not arguing against the point in the video. I believe people are manipulated and lied to in every industry, including healthcare. If a surgery has the same effect as placebo... nix the surgery. Side note: as a scientist, I TRY to look at something I agree with with more skepticism that something i disagree with. Trying to combat my confirmation bias... but that's tough.

Thank you for this explanation, I appreciate it. I also appreciate your comment about your care with the doing of science. So few people consider bias and assumptions anymore, and forget that science is meant to be a methodology, one of many methodologies, and not a philosophy or religion, as it is usually treated these days. Your comment just felt like so much fresh air.

Doctors and the organizations I am not going to name continue to ignore all the reliable studies showing that much of what we are fed is wrong. Salt, for one. Very clear history, and if you can understand and look at srudies yourself..and not a lot of people can...medicine and so-called nutrition in this country is money and often charisma,
