Fatbiking Boreas Pass on my Surly Pugsley in Breckenridge Colorado. The pass tops out at 11493ft of elevation. In the heart of the Rocky Mountains, the pass is located on the continent’s always divide. In the mid 1800’s it was a popular footpath used during the gold rush. In 1866 it was widened into a wagon road, and in 1882 the Union Pacific Railroad constructed a narrow gauge railway that was in operation until 1937. Although a high elevation mountain pass, the grades top out at about 4%, to accommodate railway operation. The pass can be driven in virtually any car, and is a great ride on a bike!

Danny Granstaff hey thanks for stopping by to check it out! I’ve always wanted a Moonlander! Maybe someday. Love the new bikes, but have a soft spot for the older “jump bar” bikes.

Wow, beautiful country up there. What are those buildings at the top used for, can people rent that place out as like a camping lodge? Looks like an awesome place to spend a weekend.
@ElevationEveryWeekend
@ElevationEveryWeekend 2 жыл бұрын
Those buildings were there for the original rail line that ran through this pass in the 1900’s. Now they have bathrooms and sometimes they will have a small shop active. I believe in the winter they can be used for ski shacks for people passing through. Breckinridge is a beautiful area though.

Its a bit of a workout, fortunately it is rail road grade so never too crazy steep like a lot of the other Colorado trails and passes.

Thanks for these videos, they have been helpful. I am searching for a fat bike and it is difficult to get information since most bikes are out of stock and I don't have experience with anything other than road and touring bikes. What is your opinion on the best bike that will "do it all"? I'm looking for something suited for winter and snow riding (we get a lot, but it's not too powdery like Colorado), trail riding for fun (no racing), taking a child to school, and just general fun/exploring/touring off road or not. I already have a touring bike that works well for everything from road to loose gravel and packed dirt. I'm mostly looking at the Pugsley/Moonlander/Ice cream truck (used) vs. Wednesday (new). Thanks!

Matt T Hi Matt thanks for watching, I really appreciate it! If you want to do legit snow riding a fatbike will be necessary IMO. Any of the three Surly fatbikes currently on sale would do all of those things well. If trail riding is a factor, the ICT or Wednesday are geared more towards that than the Pugs. The ICT does have more mounts than the Wednesday though, if that will be a factor. You can’t really go wrong with any of them, but in my (maybe biased) opinion the ICT is incredibly versatile and capable. My next video is with the ICT and involves incredibly technical and rocky high elevation terrain, it performed amazingly. All that said, if you did find a used bike that fits, I’d say go for it!
@eeeek123
@eeeek123 4 жыл бұрын
@@ElevationEveryWeekend Thanks for the quick response! It does seem like the ICT is the most versatile in terms of tire sizes, the only problem being the wide pedals if that bothers you. Have you had any issues with that? I am curious about sizing based on your experience. I am in between a small and medium. It seems that the top bar is kind of long on the Wednesday and ICT, particularly compared to what I am used to. Would you suggest to go smaller? I test rode a medium Pugsley and it felt great, but not sure about the other bikes. Do you ride the same size for both bikes?

Hi Tommy, It is always a pleasure to see your videos, thanks for sharing. I have the same bike as yours, 2014 blue Pugsley. That said, I am thinking about about converting to 1x ( don’t know the capacity of the wheel hub) without having to spend too much - any thoughts, and recommendations? I am not a gear head, I would really appreciate your input. Thanks in advance.
@ElevationEveryWeekend
@ElevationEveryWeekend 3 жыл бұрын
It’s a good question! I’m not sure what the gear capacity is on the Pugs, or how you are using it. I am a big fan of the 12spd SLX I have on my 2020 Ice Cream Truck, plenty of range and shifts well, not too crazy expensive either. A 1x11 is quite good too. If a 1x10 is enough range for you, I would say go for it! I have a 2x9 on my 2014 Pugs, and am thinking about exploring the options going 1x for it, maybe seeing if an oval front chainring helps make it a bit more capable too. Thanks for taking the time to watch, much appreciated!!

Elevation Every Weekend Thanks so much for your quick response. Currently, I run the stock 2x9, too. That said, I contacted Surly to figure out if the rear hub can accommodate 11 speed cassette, or what would be the max capacity - I will keep you posted. I am ok with 1x10, however, with 11-42t cassette to keep the low gears. I had a Rohloff on a touring bike a while back and would love to put one on my Pugsley but very pricey. Thanks again.

Elevation Every Weekend this the response that I got from Surly: Your Question: “Can I run a 1x11 drivetrain on my 2014 pugsley? Without replacing the crank arm or the rear hub? Thanks in advance.” “ Answer: “This is unlikely not possible without swapping out your cranks or hub for an optimal chainline!” Pablo from Surly Bikes

As for the PSI on your tires, you could also use a thudbuster seatpost next time and use extra hard elastomers that are above your recommended weight so as not to make your saddle position sag to much, only when hitting bumps... I use it on my pugs and it makes for a very different ride as I am able to stay seated whilst going through washboards and potholes on trails. I am not recieving such harsh thuds reverberating through my back. And its funny cause I feel like I am sittint in a caddilac.

Bram Groeneveld Thanks for the recommendation! I will definitely look into that for sure. Adjusting pressure is pretty effective, but going to low causes other issues and it’s a hassle to air back up! Cheers!
