Surly Pugsley 17.5mm wheel offset explained. Details as to why they chose this route, and details as to why this fatbike has the 135mm x 9qr rear on a fatbike, and how they changed to the 142mm x 10mm current standard. Examples of the oddity and versatility that these decisions have created.

We got two Pugs and one Moonlander standing in our garage. The Pugs are my daughters and my wifes and the Moonlander is mine. We love these bikes! The big advantage of the offset is: You can use Shimano Alfine Hubs! I prefer gear hubs and we never had problems with the Alfine 8 on our bikes.

Nice! I would still like to track down a Moonlander someday, especially one of those “John Deere” color schemes! I hope Surly will bring back the Pugs again too.

I've had some confusion trying to fit a rear rack to my Pugsley because of the offset and this is a helpful visual explanation. Thank you!
@ElevationEveryWeekend

Awesome glad it helped! I had a rear rack from another bike that fits the mounts and hub spacing on the Pugs, however the rack was not designed with a fat 4” tire in mind so it rubs. It can be challenging!

@@ElevationEveryWeekend I have a Pug Ops here in New Zealand and want to mount a rear rack. What would you recommend? One bike shop here has the Surly rear disc rack designed for the Wednesday or Ice Cream Truck. Do you think this could be modified to fit the Ops? I can't find anything for the Ops itself. Cheers for the videos. Good work.

@@jonathanharris3474 I don’t have a rack on either of my Pugs, but I can say you’ll want something with 135mm axle spacing, as the Wednesday is 177mm and the ICT has 197mm. Yes, finding one to clear the tire volume will be tough. If you do Facebook, check out a group called The Amazing Surly Pugsley and someone there might have first hand experience. Thanks for watching!

Just picked up a moonlander frameset and shared it on a Fb fatbike group page. Got a few comments on how the frame looked bent. Shared this video to explain the offset.

Wow, that offset was quite large, that's pretty trippy. I ran some asymmetrical WTB wheels on my DH bike for a season, that did not go well!!

Couple questions. I assume to run a narrower summer wheel set you would have to custom build? Can you use any wheel to do that? Such as the surly rabbit hole or marge? I’m also assuming the hub is just a normal 135 and it’s the way the tire is laced that creates the offset? Great video!
@ElevationEveryWeekend
@ElevationEveryWeekend 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think the parts themselves are pretty standard, but having it laced for the offset is a must do. I actually have a wheelset (Surly rabbit holes) from an older QR Krampus, and while it’s the same rear spacing, the standard offset makes it not usable for the Pugs. You would obviously need the hub to match the front fork spacing too. Thanks for watching!!
@curtlizzi3167

I wonder if its not just easier going with a slightly narrower tire that rolls better for summer seems like a lot of work and expense for a second wheelset. How in the world do you true an iffset wheel??
@ElevationEveryWeekend
@ElevationEveryWeekend 2 жыл бұрын
@@curtlizzi3167 I think the 26” options might be a bit limited to go much smaller than the 4” that comes on the Pugs. My stock wheels on my Pugs are 65mm wide, so probably wouldn’t want to go much smaller anyways. But yes a less heavy and aggressive fat tire would be pretty decent. The other benefit to going up to a 27.5 or 29 wheel with a much smaller tire volume is you can maintain the overall bottom bracket height, where if you stay on 26” and go much smaller, you lose ground clearance. Not the end of the world, but something to be aware of.

Link of where I can buy some rims that are 135mm? Rear wheel to be exact. I have a Rungu juggernaut with a bent rear wheel

I’m not sure where you are, but I would contact some local bike shops and see if they can help. It might cost a little more, but if you have someone local who builds wheels you can always try that if you can’t find one.

I have a 2014 pug ops I have uneven tire wear on the rear tire I’ve gone through 3 sets of tires and I contacted surly and never heard back from them
@ElevationEveryWeekend
@ElevationEveryWeekend 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I have not experienced that issue on either my 2014 Pugs or the Pugs Ops with wider rims. I assume the tires are seated correctly and not showing a major wobble? I also would try to ensure that the rear axle is seated properly in the dropouts, but over the course of changing different tires I would not expect that to happen every time.

Why did they lace the wheels that way? Why didn't they just use shorter spokes on the non drive side?
@ElevationEveryWeekend
@ElevationEveryWeekend 3 жыл бұрын
I suspect it made more sense to have the spokes be laced equally to give the triangulation for strength, as using shorter spokes and going to the brake side of the wheel may not have worked as well. My guess anyways.

I’m just about to buy a 2013 black Surley Pugsley that’s just popped up on Facebook, it next to new. They want $1000, so is a good deal. I really want to do bike packing and long distance winter touring with this bike. You explained the offset really well and to be quite honest it looks completely quirky. Versatility seems to be one of the strong points of this bike but at the end of the day do you think this bike is a keeps for life? Was there any disadvantages that you encountered? Or is this Pugsley just a real good bike? I would like to think the latter.

My opinion, if it’s in great shape buy it and enjoy! I have not had ANY problems with my Pugs, very durable and let’s say…workman like in its operation. You can always do some part upgrades down the road if you even need it. I ride mine all the time still. We actually added a second 2014 Pugs Ops, I did a couple vids with it, so that should tell you how much I like these bikes! I did put Surly Edna tires on mine and it was a big improvement, also did a vid on that too. Congrats!
