Amanda Bicket I'm not too surprised. It makes sense. I really want to do this for myself. I am thinking because many jews have been spread out around the world they want to know where their ancestors are from. I saw you have Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry. My girls have both Ashkenazi and Sephardic. Their grandfather is Ashkenazi and their grandmother is Sephardic.

That makes a lot of sense! I figured if could have had something to do with people of Jewish descent disproportionately purchasing 23andMe but I didn't have an explanation and that is a great one! Thanks for sharing that!

I am from Cape Town, South Africa and was classified during Apartheid as a Cape Coloured or sometimes called mixed South African. My results also are very diverse, very similar to yours. I’ve done my test a few months ago and it is as follows: African= 30 % (Central Africa=18%, Khoi-San=7% & East Africa= 5%) European =28% (West European=20% & South European =8%) South Asian/Indian= 17 % Indonesia/Malasian =16% Native American=8% & Chinese= 1%. Cape Coloured are considered the most mixed people on Earth. Here in Cape Town you will be seen as a local as here are quite a few millions people with various mixed heritage.

I did the test too, I had genes from everywhere except East Asia and Pacific Islanders. I had a lot of Ashkenazi Jewish relatives on the database - around 400. Then it was people I shared West African ancestry with. I think the groups more likely to take a test are individuals from diasporas e.g. African and Jewish because there’s more mystery to solve. I had a relative that was 99% British and 1% Jewish and I just thought ‘wow what a waste of money!’ Lol

Did a genealogy search and after looking at 100 yrs of census records found out my great great grandparents were both black... My grandmother was black and Creek Native American from the Creek Reservation in S Alabama. Which meant my father was half Irish and approx 30% black and 20% Native American. I’m blonde hair blue eyed and pale white skin. But growing up everyone commented how my grandmother and dad looked Mexican or some other race. Yet my grandfather was a racist asshole. Still don’t know how much he knew about my grandmothers lineage. Race is a complicated thing.

Your mom could still be right 😉 These tests only show which DNA went into making the individual; not our families' full heritage. Men are XY ~ they have X matrilineal line from their mother's mother's mother's etc line and the Y patrilineal line of their father's father's father's etc. Women are XX ~ we only get the matrilineal lines from both sides (father's mother's mother etc & mother's mother's mother etc). So, if there is Chinese on your mother's father's branch (Y) or her mother's father's branch (Y), it won't show up in *your* XX DNA; it would likely show up in test results of a male relative on your mom's side (your brother or your mom's brother, your mom's uncle, a male 1st cousin of you or your mom, etc.). 🙂 For example, my male friend knew his Native American great-grandmother when he was little.. but because she was on his father's side (Y), the female Native DNA (X) wasn't in his results-- only his female relatives on his dad's side are seeing Native American in their results.
@AmandaBicket6 жыл бұрын
Very cool! Genetics are so fascinating! I would love if my parents did it, especially my dad since I don't have a brother so he's the only one that would be able to trace the paternal lineage through the y. But good point, I didn't consider that the chinese genes could exist on the sex chromosomes and not only the autosomal chromosomes. And then there's recombination to account for which I mentioned super briefly. Definitely a lot of factors!
@Simsrockslol6 жыл бұрын
no it is an AUTOSOMAL dna test meaning that it tests the 22 pairs of AUTOSOMES. not the sex chromosomes.
@AmandaBicket6 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you mean. Are you saying 23 and me only tests autosomal chromosomes? They do test sex chromosomes as well.
@Simsrockslol6 жыл бұрын
Amanda Bicket they test the y chromosome in men to get paternal haplogroup and the mitochondrial DNA to get maternal haplogroup. Heritage is determined by your autosomes.
@AmandaBicket6 жыл бұрын
Literally in the video I showed some of my chromosomes to show the example of how recombination works and one of the chromosomes was my X. They show the regions color coded on my X chromosome. Why would the source of where they sequence the X or Y chromosomes matter, and why do you think that your heritage can't be determined at all by your X chromosomes? I might not be understanding you properly or I am misunderstanding the results they are providing.

I'm too much of a conspiracy theorist. I wouldn't do this at gunpoint. I'm not giving up my DNA for nothing. The mirror tells me what I am 😅😅 And if you weren't doing curly hair videos I could still see you being a KZbinr....probably living in one of those tiny houses on wheels doing videos about minimalist living. That would be cool 🙄

I know the thought did cross my mind but I can't think of any rational reason about a problem with giving my DNA to a company since it's so easy to get DNA from anyone. They even get DNA from dead bodies hundreds of years old. BUT I do think that if there were some evil plot to get everyone's DNA for nefarious purposes, then getting the people to pay for it THEMSELVES would be truly diabolical 👿 And thanks, I think so too I was just kidding I think I would figure something out. And I'm sure you'd love to see me convert a school bus into a house and travel around Oregon with only 2 pairs of underwear, a crop top, and my laptop! I could call the channel Amanda & Underpants on Wheels! No one steal that idea please... I might still do it 😂

Amanda Bicket I would be concerned about my DNA "mysteriously" showing up at a crime scene. Our government is ruthless and corrupt. I don't trust any of them especially the current Administration 😔 They want everyone's DNA for the National Database. Right now they need a court order to get a DNA sample from you. This way they make it seem like innocent fun and everybody wants to do it. Then when they arrest you on a trumped-up charge, they don't have to get a court order to obtain your DNA. You're already in the system which makes it easier to build a case against you 😏 And I think that minimalist channel would be a huge hit 😄
