Most importantly the crusaders learned cleanliness from the Arabs in Palestine and introduced bathing more than once or twice a year to the Europeans. They even learned being civil from the Middle Eastern, but no: We are the uncivilised ones!? 😅 And yes Paul, German has also many Arabic words.

The word chemistry derives from the word alchemy, which is found in various forms in European languages. Alchemy derives from the Arabic word kimiya (كيمياء) or al-kīmiyāʾ (الكيمياء). The Arabic term is derived from the Ancient Greek χημία, khēmia, or χημεία, khēmeia,[1][2] 'art of alloying metals', from χύμα (khúma, “fluid”), from χέω (khéō, “I pour”). [3] However, the ultimate origin of the word is uncertain.[4] According to the Oxford English Dictionary, al-kīmiyāʾ may be derived from the greek "χημία", which is derived from the ancient Egyptian name of Egypt, khem or khm, khame, or khmi, meaning "blackness", i.e., the rich dark soil of the Nile river valley. Therefore, alchemy can be seen as the "Egyptian art" or the "black art".[1] However, it is also possible that al-kīmiyāʾ derived from χημεία, meaning "cast together".[5]

Absolutely facinating brother Paul, and if I may add some more Arabic origin words - 1) admiral, 'ad-miral' 2) routine, - 'ruh-teen' 3) chemical/chemistry, - 'kimawiya' 4) . These following two are star clusters or galaxies 5) algol, - 'il-gol' 6) aldabaran, - 'adh-dabaran' 7) zenith, - 'al-sumuth' 8) zero, - 'sifr' 9) canon (law), 'kanun' 10) Alumni (university/college) - ulum/ilm11) mosque from Spanish misquita, - 'masjid' 12) eden (garden of), 'ad-dhan' .🌿 Not much is said in history books about the trade and commerce that went on - through Spain - between the magrib region, north Africa and England, France, the Benelux countries and further. Spain was under the Caliphate for 873 years, which is a very long time period, and there are a number of commodities which the colder northern European countries coveted, such as cotton cloth, and sugar, salt, olive oil, paper, glassware, metal ores etc. Merchants are always on the lookout for business and I can't help but think that the Bay of Biscay, English Channel was full of ships from Spain with Arab merchants carrying goods to the north. Maybe later on the Hanseatic League took ideas from this and the Mediterranean sea trade.🛥

Coffee as a psychoactive substance to infuse one with energy was popularised by the Yemeni sufis. It was particularly popular in the city of Mocha in Yemen (hence the mocha coffee). The travelling Derveshes found that the beans of coffee were used by the shepherds to increase the production of milk by their goats. So they put it to use. Sufis who would gather in the night for Dhikr would drink coffee which would help them to keep awake and active. Initially the super strict religious scholars declared coffee as haram because of its psychoactive nature but eventually it became no only rampant through the Arab world, but the entire globe

@rebeccaandissac Nope. Misinformation. Arabic is extremely easy to aquire, normal to learn. The misinformation came from those who were exposed to the endless Arabic grammar BOOKS. 98% of native haven't learned those books, just the first 3 stages of elementary school is enough. 2% those are people who are deeply intrested in literature especially in becoming judges of literature.

Every year, we studied a new grammar book, but if you ask me now what did I learn? All I can remember is the first 3 years of elementary school, the rest was not for me, it was for those who would like to become critic's of literature something I estimate 98% of Arabs are not intrested in.

The same word "Europe" itself came originally from Arabic. Centuries ago it was refered to as the place or the land where the Sun set. In Arabic one could say (غروب) equal to Sunset and this arabic word can be written so in english letters (Gheroup). One would even find such an early reference for this terminology back to B.C -time literary works.

Small hint regarding reading out Arabic words spelled out in English letters: when you see a letter repeated twice in succession, like 'k' in sukkar, add extra emphasis on the repeated letter, almost as if you are pronouncing it twice (suk-kar).

You mention the word zero. It comes from 'Sifr' in Arabic, meaning empty. For example if the units digit is Sifr, it is empty. There are no units there. It's symbol, unsurprisingly is 0, which is an empty circle, or more recently an ellipse. The word 'hurry' is the past participle of the Arabic verb هُرِع. The letter ع has been dropped because it's difficult for native speakers of English to pronounce. The meaning, however, has been retained.

As a native kazakh speaker, in my language for 20-25% words came from arabs. Because when Golden Horde accepted sunni-islam like a goverment religion, we taken a lot of knowleges from arabic world. For example: waqyt(time), memleket(country), araq(vodka), qalam(pen), shaitan(devil) etc. And I think when Golden Horde ruled Moscow, they named capital of Russia - to "Mosque". Because I have seen a lot of russians citizens, who cant explain what is meaning their name of capital. They just take their smartphones and cant find meaning their capital. Their culture mixed by turkic nations and german, france nations. It is not bad, but if you dont know your culture and language construction - all of you will be blind forever. I myself am not a religious person, but the arab world needs to be given its due. Mathematics, astrology, physics, medicine were the first to be taught from their hands.
