In the Philippines, a lot of old people would put coffee or hot chocolate in their rice and eat it with tuyo (dried fish). It makes it taste like champorado. My grandparents would sometimes eat banana with rice. Or dip banana in patis (fish sauce) to make it taste sweeter. I'm not saying this dish is just eaten by the elderly, but it's mostly eaten by them because most kids nowadays think it's weird.

Yeah as an Indonesian guy imagine my disappointment when I ordered a cheesecake and got a sponge cake with sprinkled cheese on top. It's hard to distinguish what people really mean when they say "cheesecake" and that sponge-cheese-cake abomination has only become more popular. Lord, please save us. Edit: I'm surprised by the replies from fellow Indonesian and Filipino saying that that sponge cake cheesecake is their default one. Growing up I call western cheesecake (cream cheese one) as "cheesecake". Whereas the sponge cake with cheese on top was just called "bolu keju".

It’s a very New England thing to eat extra sharp cheddar cheese on apple pie. It just works. You don’t use the processed, bland cheese, you need the really strong, aged cheddar. South East Asian definitely have something about that artificial boxed cheddar cheese haha. In Indonesia, if you see fruit salad on menu, its always means any fruit available (its usually apple, grape, watermelon, etc) cut small and dressing made of shredded cheese, mayonnaise, and condensed milk! Wow! Your fruit salad is almost the same as what we have here in the Philippines. The difference is we usually use the canned mixed fruits for easier preparation. adding to the Filipino weird food combo with cheese... fruit salad with cheese. fruit salad mixed with all purpose cream and cheese.. my family personally don't like that food combo... but it's a very common combo here in the Philippines. also... Ube and cheese combo is a very popular food combo here.. and I'm glad you liked it. ☺️

Growing up in the summer months, we didn't always have a ton of groceries for lunches. One of the sandwiches that I had and loved (still love), was mayo and banana. Simple, three ingredients. Cheap white bread, mayonnaise and a ripe banana (cut lengthwise in strips). My kids don't get it. That's okay.

Beryl, if you are reading this, you might be able to find Magnolia brand mais queso ice cream in an Asian store. If you find it, buy it and eat it. If you find Filipino pan de sal, toast it, split it open, and put the mais queso ice cream in it, then eat it. You'll probably like it!

I am so stoked about how much you love the PB, pickle & mayo sandwich. It's something that my friend's mother made us for lunch as a child & (despite my own family thinking it was completely bizarre), I have been eating it ever since. SO good! My favorite is crunchy PB, dill pickle slices & Sir Kensington's mayo on rye or Pumpernickel toast. AMAZING.
