In addition to swapping the milk for evaporated milk, try the halo-halo with a scoop of ube ice cream as well. It's not as redundant as it sounds (because you already have the ube spread). Obviously different regions will/will not have the ice cream and other toppings, but with ube ice cream becoming such a novelty in the US right now, it's another way to enjoy it (other than itself).

Summer to me is a fresh tomato sandwich. My grandparents lived in Mississippi and my grandfather had a very large garden. He grew everything you can imagine out there! My favorite memories include my grandmother sitting at the kitchen table, peeling giant tomatoes from my grandfather's garden for tomato sandwiches. It is the easiest thing to make. Two pieces of white bread (must be white bread, thing Wonderbread) mayo, salt, pepper, and a thick slice of tomato. The tomatoes from my grandfather's garden were so huge that a single slice far exceeded the dimensions of the bread.

India has a popular summer drink, Masala Chaas (Spiced Buttermilk) and we find it everywhere. The yogurt in combination with mint cools your body, while the black salt and ginger helps keep things interesting! Buttermilk in India is not the same as in the US. Its essentially whisked and diluted full fat yogurt, that is then mixed with black salt, cilantro & mint, roasted cumin powder, grated ginger and if you are game, chopped chillies! Do give this a try! Other cooling yogurt drinks include Plain chaas (just buttermilk with salt) and Lassi (A super-thick sweet yogurt drink with lots of 'malai' - the fat film that forms on top of hot milk while cooling down).

I second this recommendation, Slavic food is my favourite in summer. Could nearly do a whole episode on their summer foods/salads! Also recommending my favourite polish dish: when it's hot we make pork schnitzel and cucumber salad. Pork that's pounded thin, coated in egg yolks with salt and pepper then coated in dry breadcrumbs (ideally bułka from polish store) and fried in pan. Cucumbers peeled then grated thinly left with salt to drain out water for hour or 2 in fridge, then squeeze it to get excess water. Then add cream (but we use creme fresh ) and chopped fresh dill without the stalks. Stir it up and chill it again so nice cold salad to go with hot Schnitzel.

My vote for summer dish is succotash, derived from the Narragansett Native Americans, it’s sweet fresh corn and Cooked Lima beans or similar , usually some fresh chopped summer tomatoes, fresh basil or other fresh herbs , usually pan fried / sautéed a bit in butter or bacon grease, sometimes w some crumbled bacon added , or omit the bacon and use a vegan option to fry with . Usually can be served room temp or even chilled so a good picnic dish as well or potluck dish . It lives or dies in the freshness and summeriness of the corn and tomatoes !

I feel like “pastel” represents a good brazilian summer food. It’s kind of our dumpling, similar to empanadas. The fried dough is thin, airy and crispy, and the filling options are endless (the most traditional being ground beef and eggs). Pastel is enjoyed on the beach, in farmers markets (pastel de feira), in “botecos” (brazilian bars) and in birthday parties. It’s a very casual and delicious fried summer food ☀️💞

Usually we do our halo halo by putting the ingredients in the bottom first then buried it with shaved ice so that it will not melt. It's okay coz there's a lot of ingredients that you can top it with. After putting the shaved ice, we drizzled a lot of evaporated milk and topped with mango or ube/ube ice cream!! There's a lot of things we love to put in our halo halo. We can add some tapioca, sweetened banana, rice crispies and more. Personally, my way of eating it is, I paired it with Sky flakes which is a plain biscuit crackers after I finished mixing everything up. I love it so much and it might be sound weird but it's delicious so you should try it some time. 😊

Halo-halo is my favorite thing to introduce to people, because it has all kinds of “unusual” ingredients for a dessert. Ranging from corn to beans. The looks on their faces are priceless with how shock they are to find themselves enjoying it. I won’t lie I’ve never really made it myself I always went to a restaurant to get it, but when I think of halo halo I kind of compare it to a slushy. Hello miss Beryl, I'm also from the Philippines. 😉 If you're planning of having another bowl of Halo-halo, then i recommend that you put a scoop of ice cream on top. The ice cream could be a substitute for the sweet purple yam or just simply an add-on. The ice cream flavor should preferably be "ube" but vanilla, cheese, or mango could do too. ❤ chocolate should be a no-no. 😄 Speaking of mango, a fresh ripe mango can be an add-on too. 😅 Another add-on could be a fresh (or preserved) young coconut meat. 💯 Actually, you can add anything you like. 🤗 But i tell you, you better not forget the ice cream. 💙💙 Enjoy eating!!!

Here in India, we have Falooda, which I have fond memories of eating most summers, especially when I was a kid. It has rooh afza, a very popular rose flavored syrup, which is a popular summer drink in itself. A full jar of Falooda contains cooked cold Vermicelli, soaked basil seeds (sabja), 2-3 scoops of icecream (a nut flavored ice cream or something plain, like vanilla or pista), chilled and sweetened milk, a fruit jelly (this is optional), glazed cherries, tutti fruity, cashews and pistas and the rose syrup. If not for the video, I hope you try this atleast once. There are tons of variations regionally as well. I think the north east side they use custard instead of milk, which sounds equally delicious! Also, any local Falooda vendor has 2 options for the syrup, the most common one being the rose syrup, and the other is kesar.

the halo-halo does, in fact, melt immediately, especially when you buy it from the table that your neighbor's kids set up a few houses down, but that's my favorite part of it. the cold, milky goodness that gets left behind is a nice drink to wash down all the chewy bits.

When I think of summer I think of rhubarb. Much of my family would look forward to strawberries, but I’m allergic to them. But rhubarb? Rhubarb pie, my grandma’s rhubarb custard pie, rhubarb upside-down cake, etc. Rhubarb grows wild in many place in the Midwest, but not all of it is good (like the stuff by the side of the road). Harvesting it while the stalks are thin and have a lot of pink is crucial. It’s very tart without bitterness, and the flavor is like the sun shining on your face.

My Grandmother made Cheese and Peas. It is a cold summer pasta salad. You have to use Ditalini pasta the way they work with the peas is just perfect. My Grandma had a large garden and she made this when the shell peas were at their peak. You should have equal amounts of peas and pasta, the cheese is usually a mild cheadar. Cut the cheese into small dice about the size of the peas. You can choose how much, but there should be about one or two bits in a bite. Mayo to barely coat, dill and salt, and pepper. Chill and serve.

YES HALO HALO!!!! I GREW UP ON IT and it's my favorite dessert to this day!! It's similar to the korean bingsu which is equally just as good!!

I'm glad you tried Halo-Halo. Most people are turned off by the beans when, literally red bean paste types of deserts exist. A good tip to keep the shaved ice from just melting immediately is keeping all the ingredients in the fridge before hand even if they are room temperature safe items like the ube halaya, evaporated milk, halo-halo mix you used. Everything looked delicious so, I might try them before the summer ends. Especially the Spanish dish which reminds me a bit of bruschetta when on toast.

This episode features nothing but amazing food!! As someone who lives in Daly City, CA (little Manilla), I can attest to deliciousness of Halo Halo. If you have a Ranch 99 grocery store, you have purple yam ice cream. Americans don't associate beans with sweetness but there are many amazing ways to serve beans sweet.

In the Philippines, aside from Halo-halo we also have Avocado shake/smoothy. It's just simply shaved ice avocado, condensed milk as sweetener, and coconut cream. Then blend them all together. We also have Iced/Chilled Buko Pandan. It can be a summer dessert or a drink. The main ingredients are coconut shreds, pandan flavored jelly, coconut milk, and condensed milk. The buko pandan and halo-halo are the most popular during summer... 😅

In Viet Nam, we eat sweet soup (we call it "chè") at the summer. This dish is sooooo tasty, scented and it is about every people's favorite when it gives us the coolness, sweetness, relaxing at a hot summer day. Vietnamese people from North, Central, South have many different kinds of sweet soup. I think it is worth for u to try it.

Oh, don't worry about the halo-halo melting, Beryl! That's actually how it's supposed to be-a halo-halo "soup", so dw, you did it right! 😊 PS, a few others might have mentioned already, but evaporated milk is what's supposed to be used, since you do kind of want it to have that cereal milk consistency. I suggest you try it again by yourself with evaporated milk, or even whole milk (I do this sometimes). Hope you enjoy it and thank you as always for letting us share the wonderful things about our culture, Beryl 😊 Mabuhay ka! 🇵🇭

In Vietnam, during the hot summer time we have chè (sweet soup). Among them all, there's chè đỗ đen (Black bean sweet soup) you should really try, or if you fancy something more tasty and challenging to make, try chè sen nhãn lồng (longan with lotus seed sweet soup).

I just bought Halo-Halo (I Absolutely love Halo-Halo) from my local asian food market day before last. My mom is originally from Kuala Lumpur. She moved here to be with my dad over 50 years ago. They met at a tourist location in Singapore. He was there on RnR from the U.S. Navy. 5 days later they got married. They will be celebrating there 53rd wedding anniversary on the 19th. Anyway... We have always loved to shop at the Asian markets and pick up things she remembered as a kid eating. So many delicious sweet fruits in a can and/or bottle and/or dried. I love preserved fruits like plums too. Thank you for another wonderful video. P.S. - Have you ever tried durian fruit? Said to be the stinkiest food in the world. It is actually banned from hotels and the metro. Lol. That's it you need to do a video on "Stinky" foods the smell bad but taste So Good. P.S- Jack fruit "meat" is used as a "meat" substitute. You can use Jackfruit meat to make BBQ pulled pork.

Oooh I would've preferred an evaporated milk for the halo-halo. And ice cream!!! I was surprised that the recipe didn't include ice cream in it since halo-halo normally has ube ice cream as a topping but I'm sure it was still a delight.

We have ice gola in india made from shaved ice.. It's kinda similar to halo halo just with diff topping and flavoured syrups... But it's best thing in indian summer.. 😅
@palakmaniar87713 жыл бұрын
In India, we have a same dish as Halo Halo which is called 'Barf - Gola' ( meaning ice-balls) or simply 'Gola'. You get it in two types...one which can be served on plate or in a bowl and other one which is called stick gola. One which is served in bowl/plate has shaved/crushed ice topped with variety of flavourful syrups, jellies, cream and dry fruits or even chocolate shavings. While un stick gola, crushed ice is rolled around a stick(like a candy) and then flavoured syrup is poured over it. Adults as well as kids love it the same way. One of the nostalgic memories is running from home with a bowl to buy an ice gola when we hear the bell of selling cart in evenings. And going out with family and friends to enjoy this dish after dinner on a hot summer night.

Thank you for this Beryl. Not only for the interesting topics you cover, but particularly for giving people from all around the world a platform to to tell the rest 'of the world' what they like, love and do and eat. Regardless of whether the ingredients are available (in my case, South Africa) its great to see dishes outside of the stereotypical 'national recipes' that other folks enjoy.

We need a part 2! I definitely think of raw mango dishes from Maharashtra, India. One is a chilled drink called "Panha" and the other is a spicy and sour dish made using raw mango and lentils called "Oli Daal"! WE LOVE IT

I enjoyed the Korean version of Halo Halo on hot summer days. Delicious. The Koreans use sweetened red kidney beans in many dishes. Sweetened red kidney bean paste is used as filling for pastries and their famous rice wedding balls. The bean ice cream sicle is a favorite.

Thank you for the cool videos and your appreciation of Russian cuisine. I have couple of suggestions. First is Russian cold soup - Okroshka, and second is cold dumplings with cherries. Cherries in Russia are mostly sour, so we usually add a bit of sugar inside of each dumpling. They are eaten with hands and, please, be careful with that. They are very juicy and will definitely drip all over your hands.
@rabeapakind37093 жыл бұрын
Приготовьте окрошку без яиц и картофеля на основе сметаны. Сварите с ним пельмени и положите себе на тарелку несколько пельменей и добавьте немного окрошки. По вкусу напоминает теплый освежающий суп. Make okroshka without eggs and potatoes based on sour cream. Cook pelmeni with it and put some pelmeni on your plate and add a bit of okroshka. It tastes like a lukewarm refreshing soup.

As a kid I used to go visit my grandmother in Switzerland in the summer and we used to have something called “chreisi schtorm” which translates to cherry storm. Fresh cherries, toasted flour, sugar, whipped cream, and milk. All layered in a big bowl and it was something we often had for dinner in the summer. 😁🇨🇭

From Germany: Kartoffeln mit Quark - potatoes with Quark (a creamy dairy product a bit like yogurt) usually there's herbs in the quark, you can also add butter, margarine, flaxseed oil and / or liver sausage spread (leberwurst). I usually add everything except for butter. There might even be other variations. Everything except the potatoes is cold. And you just put everything on one plate next to each other and then eat it however you like. (except for the flaxseed oil which goes on the quark)
