That has got to be the most impressive homeowner firewood processing operation! The winner of this challenge is the one you grab most often on-camera or not. I bought the 500i based on other videos you made and I have a lot of Stihl Pro saws I've bought since 2000. The 500i is my favorite to date and the one I grab all the time... or 201T if its something small.

Good morning! Amazingly magical mist rose from the stream across the little valley this morning. Filled the valley. Regards the test. Consider a side by side with 500 and 880 where you account for the physics of the bar length by using the same position on the bar. On the 500, you started out about 6” and worked closer, maybe all the way to the dogs for your pivot. On the 880, it was middle or farther. That extra 12-18” between the head and the active cutting surface really changes the down force, assuming the same force at your hands. It really showed on your upward cut. My days here at the farm have been filled with my little MS180c, cutting cedars out of a fencerow. Quite a contrast to your 4!

That's a great first saw! I picked up a an ms261cm, with a 20" bar. It's dealt with the odd ~30" logs well enough and rips thru sub 20's. Nice and light, pro saw. That 500i is sweet though. If I had more big stuff to deal with, that would've been on the list

I have the 362, the 261, the 250, a 170, and an old 028. All great saws and the 362 is certainly the fastest, but with older arthritic hands, the lighter saws get most of the use. Not that the 362 is “heavy” - it’s the best power to weight in its class - but I reserve the 362 for the large trees. For all around little stuff, I’ll grab the 170. If you keep the muffler screen clean, it works great and is light as a feather. For multi-hour cutting a load of average size logs, the 261 is the choice. However, for people that only cut now and then, the MS 250 - yes, a consumer grade saw - is an amazingly good choice. It’s only a bit less HP than the 261, a couple tenths of a pound lighter, and half the price. In the consumer saw market, it blows away all the competition. I wouldn’t use it hours on end because it has a bit more vibration than the 261, but for small jobs, it’s a great saw.

@@profdave2861 I have a small Echo CS352 that is perfect for the small stuff. It's light and surprisingly efficient for a small inexpensive saw. I bought the bigger Stihl to clear a building site for our camp (coming soon) and I just love the power to weight ratio.

Oh my stars, Mike!! My husband and I are cleaning up fifteen LARGE slash piles, on our Washington State property. Long story short, the “logger” didn’t fulfill the agreement so we are manually tearing apart the slash piles, by sizes of wood, so we can burn during burn season. We are DROOLING over those saws! We have a Stihl MS211C 18” bar. We might as well have a fingernail file for the size of work we are doing. I love the 500i, that would be amazing for this work. Thank you so much for sharing all of this information. Bless

I have been using my excavator as well to lift and buck up logs. One thing I found worked a little better was rather than use a bucket I put on a root ripper attachment. Its makes it almost like a grapple and you can completely buck up the log and not have those pieces you have to bend over and cut on the ground.

Good morning, Mike. Merely an observation, but I believe that the 880 might have scored better if its powerhouse was as close to the wood(instead of 36 inches away, so that the leverage forces were similar)as it was with the 500i, to maximize the weight of the engine. If there’s a chance, try making the variables equivalent. Excellent comparisons. Havaday!

Hey Mike and Melissa! I was waiting on the MS400 update but figured I would ask now, how are you feeling about that saw? I'm bouncing between a MS261 and the MS400 - mostly for firewood use 12-18" and ocasional larger tree felling and procesing, 30"+ fir and larch, birch. I've mostly run a 455 rancher, a few random cheap/old saws and looking to upgrade from that, I've run 372 and 390 husky's of my brothers a bit but definently dont think I need that kind of power (or weight) for the softwoods out west where I am. If you were re-doing your "best firewood saw" video would the 400 beat out the 261? Less than 2 lbs more weight and a little more money for 33% more power? I'd love to hear some opinions, you have some really great content!

@@andrews2203 at the moment I'm still using the rancher, it still works for what i need but watching the buy and sell pages for a 261C-M to come up for a decent price. kicking myself that I didn't manage to snag one of the ones that was for sale in the summer for about half of new, everything up in my area are year old saws listed for MSRP once we hit the fall. if I don't manage to find a good deal on a used one by next fall I'm planning on getting a new 261. whenever I'm cutting wood with people with big saws they're fun to take for a rip but at the end of the day I always go for the lighter saws, easier to handle and position for limbing and I'm less tired at the end of the day even if it does take me another few seconds in each cut. if i do need to knock down some big trees and dont have access to borrow a bigger saw from someone can get sprocket kits to run a 3/8" 32" combo on them but i imagine it would be real slow going, that's a fraction of my use but might be interesting to try

Should show how those cookies burn. I think they would add a different perspective to a camp fire. The Swedish flame is also a unique campfire idea.(Either pie cut from the top of one end to about 1" or 2" from the other end............or drill 2 1" holes in a log about 1" or 2" from the other end that meet). soak both from the top with charcoal lighter, kerosene, or diesel. the air flowing through creates the torch effect. if you have flat ground and cut both ends flat, you can cook or make coffee on it. Good idea for hollow logs, too... stuff the center with kindling... I mead jam it in hard with a hammer... don't forget your horizontal air flow hole you drill into the bottom or set the stuffed one on a couple sticks.

I went to the store and picked up the 880 with a 36 inch bar, man that's a heavy saw. And really front heavy, that big bar pulled the saw down at a steep angle.

Not surprising the 880 was slower on the upcut. That is a whole lot of chain getting pushed instead of pulled. Between that and the weight, it makes perfect sense.

Great comparison Mike will be great for many to make their decision … I have 1 Stihl saw Farm Boss…. now about 9 years ago I had 5 saws stolen and I never replaced them not much need for them in Construction.. but after the thief I built a big pole barn for my work equipment 60x140 … now I keep everything locked inside and haven’t had anymore thief’s .. Thanks for the great videos
