Great video. In 1982 my first car was a 65 Chevy II, 283 power glide, manual steering, manual brakes. Same dash, many of the same parts except 2 lights in the rear. While I have gone on to own many higher quality classics, she's the one that got away. One more point, I sold the car to fund my best deal effort. An engagement ring now supporting 32 years.

My first car was a 63 Nova station wagon 6 cylinder with Powerglide in good shape. I paid $500 for it in 1970. My high school buddies sniggered at me. But it was MY car, I paid for it, and I was proud of it. I wish now I had kept it for the nostalgia value.

In 1977 - 1979 I went on a square body Nova tear. Had 4 of them. My favorite was my '64 SS, with a 283 and a [Emily will love this] 4-gear. Glove box light works, dome light works, headlights work - do the reverse lights work?? Be certain to lock the ignition switch when exiting the car. in the "off" position, fingertips start the car. Don't even need a key. I'd be sure those new keys lock the switch. If I knew how, I'd send y'all a couple Briggs & Stratton OEM blanks for Nana! Emily, you are fickle! First in love with a Corvette, then swayed by a little Nova...😁 Glad y'all got a V-8 car. Makes the little cars fun to drive. I'd keep it original [even the radio, it can be repaired/upgraded - Just Dashes makes a repro dash pad], as they are hard to come by, in V8 fashion. Very cool to have the OEM wheel covers. They are only original cars once. Even 4 door Novas have value, original not restored, especially when they are in the condition of yours. Nice find! As far as breakage, make sure the spare is good, get extra belts and radiator hoses, maybe some heater hose [don't forget clamps], stuff like that. I predict a smoooth trip, averaging around 18 MPG. BTW, like that you added a short segment of driving the Nova in the outro.

My second grade teacher had this car in a two tone blue...It suited her perfectly; she was in her 60s at the time...It was 1964 and she had just bought it new...I was 7 at the time...I'm 65 now...My experience with mid-60s Chevys suggests that fuel pump, water pump, and electrical systems would most likely be what I suspect might fail, but if you treat her well, you might very well get home with no problems at all...Congratulations on what looks like a very solid car...Fix that A-pillar soon...Having spent time in Ohio, rust will likely be a problem elsewhere on the car as well...

Best of luck on the Nova; my grandmother would like it because of the 4-door she could haul the grand kids to Walmart and Popeye’s without beingg disencumbered. Should you be lucky enough to make money on the restoration and there aren’t enough low priced Novas available, any Dodge Alpine or Plymouth Volare’ should be a viable substitute if they’ve avoided the crusher. While doing the makeover keep your pennies close and any grandmothers looking to buy a car even closer.

Emily, on a car like this one the only thing the left foot should be used for is the dimmer switch. Aaron is right you didn't read your driver's training manual. Love this car. Remember the 283 and powerglide combination first appeared on the '56 Chevy. The 265 is the first of a line of engines running all the way up to the 350 small block.

The '56 was a 265" motor. I owned an all original '56 2 door hardtop in 1963 and had the engine bored it out to 283".

I got a new 1965 Nova two door hardtop my senior year in high school. Mine was also a 283 Powerglide. Tough little car. I upgraded mine a bit with a four barrel Rochester and dual exhaust. My Dad had a 64 Chevelle with the factory power pack set up, basically the same as mine ended up with the four barrel and dual exhaust. Those two would run wheel to wheel in the quarter mile. I sold it when I entered the Army in 1967. Upon my return from Vietnam in March 1969, I bought a new 1969 SS/RS 396 4 speed Camaro. These two were probably my favorite cars to date. Wish I still had both of them. Have fun with that little Nova, I know you will!!!

I'd be careful jumping to any conclusions about that Model A. I put on the car shows for twenty years, where I used to work. At one show there was a bright orange Model A Sedan with a blown 427, pulling a bright orange ski boat with another 427, riding on a bright orange trailer... oh, and there were three other '34 Fords in mint condition with all the original running gear. We had a bunch of engineers working there with some really nice toys!!

I would be checking the wheel bearings and front end parts (T-Rod ends and ball joints) before making a 2,000 mile drive. Also grab an extra fan belt and perhaps have some electrical tape on hand in case you need a quick rad hose repair on the way. Good luck and safe travels.

In 1967 I took my driving test in my Dad's 1960 Falcon. I convinced my parents to buy a 1965 Nova SS. It was tone blue, 6 cylinder, bucket seats, powerglide floor shift. Nice car. I drove it until I bought my first car, a 64 GTO convertible. That led to many muscle cars over the years. My best friend had a 64 Nova SS, Factory 283 four speed that was really fast. He sold it to another friend, it was stolen and never seen again.

Nice car. If the engine is original take it easy till you get home then replace the timing chain and gears. You might have issues with the cooling system, and charging system. Take the voltage regulator off and clean the points. They get a little crusty. Just in case; the voltage reg. is the 2 1/2 X 3 inch square box on the rad support. haha We all know about opinions, but I think the 283 is the best engine Chevy built in the late 50s to early 60s. Check the fluids daily and it'll be fine. Good luck on your trip.

My first car was a ‘62 Nov 4 door in the exact same body color. It was a 194 C.I. 6 Cyl with a 3 on the tree and a horrible knock. I paid $80 for it. I blew that up in short order. I bought a 230 CI 6cyl and “rebuilt” in in shop class. The I found a Hurst 3 speed floor shifter ( who knew? ) for free and installed that in the driveway. I had 3 Novas in my life. The last was a 69 2 door that I never should’ve sold. Thanks for the memories!

We once had a 64 Nova 2 door V8. At the same time we also had a 64 Chevelle SS. When I sold them both to the same guy, we replaced them with a 69 GTO. Love GM Muscle Cars! These days, I drive a Ford 97 OBS Diesel. Live, Love it!

My very first car that I bought after I graduated from High School way back in 1972 was a 1963 Silver Blue 2 door Nova. One of the best cars I ever owned, and definitely my all time favorite. At least until a big dump truck essentially destroyed it running a stop sign. I wasn't hurt, but we could never get the frame straightened out enough to make it drive able again. Man I miss that car and the 3 years I spent with it.

I've had four Nova's over the years , the first being a 1966 red l79 350 hp 327 4 speed. The oddest one was a 1962 2 door sedan 4 cylinder, three speed on the column, with barely any chrome trim, the old chuck style rear end, rubber floor mats, single speed wipers, that I was going to hotrod but I just couldn't do it to such a rare car. Enjoy your new toy and I'll be watching fore the future upgrades.

I had 4 or 5 Chevy II 's in high school and college, loved them and miss them, mine all had the 194 inline 6, fix the rust and keep it a survivor she is unique ride, get the important spare parts, belts hoses sounds like a good idea, but do not forget about points and condenser and a coil remember she is old school and if the points and condenser go, you won't , check her fluids often, and you need to get a lead additive because the valve seats were designed to run on leaded gasoline, and you could damage the valve seats running it on the 87 unleaded gasoline, drive safe.

What might break? Belt, distributor cap, points, a bearing, a loose ground.. HA the "What if list" is long! The adventure is priceless!! What "I" hope you do with it... keep it fairly stock and original, dress up in '60's styles with family and friends for more adventures! Enjoy!!

I grew up with my Moms car a 1963 Chevy Nova 2 4 door light blue with the 235 inline 6 and 2 speed power glide! It was great!Buy the way if you turn the Ignition key to off and not lock you can pull the key out and still start the cat and it will not go into lock unless you put the key back in! I used to steal Moms car every Fri night when my Parents would go out!! LOL I predict no breakage!!

Being in such good shape I would keep it as original as possible, the interior and trim is unbelievable for It's age , no cracks in the steering wheel, original hub caps, head liner looks good, you found a real gem 💎.

Drove a 1957 210 sedan in high-school through the late 80's early 90's. Same 283 power glide combo. Ran wonderfully. Still does with it's current owner.

I love that quiet little Powerglide whine. My grandpa had a 6 cyl. convertible when I was a kid. Sure wished we had that car today. Great find! Enjoy. Be safe! Love the shot at the end. Emily, GM didn't go to two keys until 1965. That was one of the big differences between the '64 Skylark sedan I used to have and the '65 Skylark sedan I have now. Like you I love four door sedans.

Love that little car. As good of a survivor as it is I think it should be kept as original as possible inside and out. It's a great time capsule that's for sure. My grandparents had a '66 Chevy II Nova 4 door with the 230 and 'glide. It had a NECK BREAKING zero to 60 that you had to time with a calendar but it was a great running rig that was a good daily for my grandma and my dad and his 3 siblings all learned how to drive in it. They had it from '71 until around 2000. When grandpa brought it home my dad's older sister cussed him out for getting a Nova. She was a rebel and still drives like a bat out of hell in her mid 60's. Ironically, she ended up owning it for a few years and then sold it back to grandpa a few years later. Could be a 'glide thing but the 230 had the same whine from the inside of the car as that 283 does. Hearing that whine really took me back. When grandpa sold that car in around 2000 it was a clean and rust free garage kept cream puff...and was actually cream colored. Looked better inside and out than a lot of cars less than 10 years old. The radio and heater never worked in it though.

Those 1950s 60s cars will go all day at 65 70 MPH just check your oil and coolant levels here and there and watch the lights ( idiot lights lol ) if one comes on pull over... maybe an extra fan belt in the trunk just incase... if its a 283 2barrel its 195 hp 4 barrel its 220 hp. Ive had several malibus over the years.. my 64 malibu i bought with 73k a long long time ago lol . I love it ... good luck and thanks for sharing and welcome to Cali !!

Love the old Nova's. I don't expect you will have any problems on the way home. The 283's were the most dependable and long-lasting engines that Cheverolet ever made. I have seen them run over 300,000 miles if you take care of the oil changes and tune-ups.

@@kenreeve32 Yeah my neighbor had a station wagon with over 300,000 miles and the body rotted out from under neath of it. The motor was still running though. I believe the only reason Chevrolet got rid of the 283 and 327 is because they would never die.

That is how I bought a Tesla ;-), rented one on Turo and drove the wheels off of it. The filters, availability and sometimes delivery are amazing. If you just search all models near you, the inventory is incredible. Great for a day or weekend in the ride of your choice.

1964 was the 2nd year GM used altenators (w/ external voltage regs. GM left 'Generator' on the dummy light for a few years after. If any problems happen, it will be the water pump, or the electrical system. Safe travels guys!!!

I don't think that it will fight you, they are just so simple that they don't tend to quit. If you do have problems, I would expect them to come from the water pump or the points. Sometimes they snap if they are very old. I would suggest that you take a good look at the front brake hoses and be sure that the parking brake works as it might be all you have! Have fun!

If I remember correctly 327 crank in that 283 would give you 302 with stock bore, would make a sweet little hotrod cruiser.

When I turned 16 in 1980, my dad let me drive his ‘65 Chevy II 300. Nova was a better trim package. 230 engine, 3 on the tree. The only trim was around the windows. Dog dish hubcaps and didn’t even have back-up lights. 2 door sedan. Radio delete. That was the one that got away.

That's a cool app, wish it was in more places. I love Emily's smile. The only issue with you two getting a C7, would be keeping tyres under it. 😂 Personally, I'd drop a late model 350ci in it with disc brakes. Then putting all the old stuff in a create. So it can be returned to original later. Look on the back of the leatherman box, that will show you where the knife is. As for stuff that can break, Alternator, water pump, anything rubber. I'd also grab a tube of silicon and do a temp repair on that windscreen and a bluetooth speaker for the drive home.

That vintage Nova with a 283 is somewhat rare and very cool. I’d leave that little v8 in there and maybe spice it up a little if this is going to be a street cruiser. More than enough engine for this car as a cruiser.

Emily, Arron is correct, left foot on the brake pedal is a no no. First of all as time goes on you will end up resting your left foot on the pedal, the constant downward pressure will cause a slight braking action which will wear your brakes out prematurely and as a safety concern the brake lights will be illuminated all the time your foot is on the pedal, confusing the the drivers following behind you who now don't know if you are slowing down/stopping etc. If you must rest your foot on something look for the little dimmer switch button on the left side of the floor up towards the fire wall it will serve the purpose for you.

Rarity doesn’t always mean valuable, but I cannot remember the last time I’ve seen a Nova 400 model sedan with a 283! I say fix the rust and rear seat and enjoy! Great find!

I had a 67 Chevy Impala 2-door with a 283 and a two speed slush box transmission. Bought it for $200, cut the roof off of it painted it yellow with a custom flame job and drove it. New plugs, points and wires and we drove that car for years! Great on road trips, nice on the highway. All these years later I feel bad about chopping up a fairly decent 67 two door, but back then they were common and cheap. Loved that car. Enjoy your 64 Nova!

I've had a Leatherman skeletool for years, small blade, pliers, screwdriver + bits and all lightened/drilled out like a hot rod! Got me out of trouble plenty. Treat yourself Aaron 👍

Seriously doubt you'll have any issues unless it is some overheating but I doubt that. I daily drive a thirty year old E class Mercedes and prefer it and trust it more than my new automobiles. There is just something about older cars that is kind of comforting. The lack of electronic babysitters makes driving a more visceral experience. I feel more connected to the car and the roads.

I'd find a harbor freight get a mid-size tool kit. Mechanical fuel pump and an alternator in the belt if it actually has two of them. Both radiator hoses and a thermostat. Anything else you should be able to get it even Walmart coolant oil simple stuff like that. But the 283 powerglide they're hard to beat dependable on top of dependable. Really glad you two found this little car it's awesome. I believe Nana is a keeper.

the 283 is one of the best older motors ever made because its P stroked for those who don't know the term P STROKED THE bore and stroke are the same as in 4in stroke with 4in pistons the balance in doing that means its almost indestructible! and to add horse power you add the famous camel backed heads from a vette from the years 62-67

Water pump lube would be disaster protection 😅!!! Bars leak makes a good one. Also, jump pop off the grease cap on the front wheel bearings, pack them well and adjust the preload loosely 1/4 turn off 0. That could save you a big issue 😊!

The only things I would expect to fail would be the water pump and the alternator, and since you have a spare water pump hopefully you are good!

I would say that the most likely failure points would be the fan belt, front wheel bearings, water pump, and one of the front rubber brake hoses.

You can stop the speedo from jumping pulling the inner part out and greaseing it. I had a tool to hook to the speedo cable at the trany and useing a grease gun to lube the inner cable.

I would carry all the fluids , brake fluid, coolant, at. Also check the tires, if they are old then replace them, check air in the spare . Carry some spare worm clamps for the radiator hoses , maybe some stop leak. Several rolls of electrical tape , mechanics wire, zip ties, electrical wire, reasonable tool kit , small aluminum floor jack, tools to change a spare tire . Neat car, have safe trip !

Love the Nova!! She really is "so sweet." The 283 & PG are a great combo. I don't think y'all will have any problems, but if it were me & had a few days I would go ahead & do some preventative maintenance on her like a good tune-up, change the belts & hoses, oil, flush the radiator, transmission service, rear diff. service, check the brakes & wheel bearings. Basically I would check & replace anything that would be a pain to do on the side of the road & anything you don't replace, go ahead & buy it to take with you. It would be better to have it & not need it than need it & not have it. You know as well as I do, that if it does happen to break down 9 times out of 10 it's going to be somewhere in BFE & no parts stores.I would also do a temporary fix on that leak on the A pillar because you know you're going to run into some rain on the way home. Good luck bringing her home to our great state of Texas!!

Nice little ride. I don't see you having any problems on your trip. Those little 283's are great little engines, especially if it's that lower mileage. I just did a frame off rotisserie build of a 62 nova wagon like joes and I also have a 283 ( out of a 67 Nova) and turbo 350 in it. Putting in a 700-R4 this fall. Will be watching for further attention you give to your new ride. Good luck and have fun.

Being a sbc really just basic things can go wrong. Alt. Starter. Water pump. Belts tires . that's a beautiful 4 dr Nova. A real survivor. I just bought a 4 Dr 65 buick special. Someone put a 350 Chevy in it. Little rust not much tho. Thinking about a 2 Dr conversion. I'd fix what needs to be fixed on that no a and leave the rest alone. That's my thought anyways. Deja vu. I had a ‘65 Nova (250ci, Powerglide) through grad school in the early 70s. I called it Plain Jane. I drove across the country twice and survived 5 winters. Wish I had it now.

The 283 was one of GM’s best motors at the time. I had several Impalas with it. That Powerglide would whine like that in Park position.

Very nice! My very first car was a '68 Cutlass with the high compression 350 and the "Jetaway" 2-speed auto. It would give a chirp going from first to second, at 67 miles an hour. It surprised a few people at stoplights. That little Nova is a great ride. Hope you get many, many miles of joy from it. All the best to you both.

We're not talking about a 4-speed, or even a three-speed auto. Check the numbers yourself. With a G78-14 tire, Jetaway first gear ratio about 1.78 , and a 3.23 rear gear, 67 mph is about 4800 rpm. Which is just about where Oldsmobile advertised its 10.25:1 350 to make its rated horsepower. From the Wiki... "In Drive at full throttle, it would upshift from low gear to high gear at 60-65 mph." My speedometer wasn't calibrated, but 67 is pretty close to 65. The Jetaway was not a Powerglide, it was a different design. But it was a two-speed auto, and they still use the two-speed Powerglide in drag racing today. Cleetus McFarland has run one in some of his cars.

You probably couldn't break that Nova deliberately! Had a beater '65 Nova(last year of the small body like that), had a Powerslide trans and a tired 235 inline 6, put a 250 engine in it and it was an indestructible car! It saw 270 F. on several occasions climbing grades(bad thermostat was finally replaced, no problem then)but never popped a head gasket, thanks to GM's generous use of cast iron in those inline 6 engines.
