Having left five years earlier to start a new life in Arizona, Susan Lewis returns to Chicago looking for a new job and stops by to visit her old place of work, but struggles to interact with the new staff members.

I remember her getting so much criticism for leaving such a hit show and I must admit I still don't understand but fame is hard. It seems weird she would come back years later. It's like returning to high school all over again. I wanted her and Mark to find their happy ending and I will never forget the scene when Mark leaves the ER for the last time and he gives Susan that look. The look to me expressed fear, sadness and regret. This show gets me every time. Nothing else compares.

One reason for the backlash was Sherry Stringfield left a lead role on NYPD Blue after one season because she "didn't have enough to do" on that show, was cast in ER and then left after 2 seasons because she had "too much to do" and wanted a work/life balance. A second reason that I almost forgot about: the producers were setting up a romance subplot between Lewis and Greene, and her departure nixed that plot. (I wonder if Greene would have been beaten up in the bathroom if he was dating Lewis at the time)

Actually, the writers and the executive producer wanted to develop that storyline for an upcoming Season 3, but Dr. Lewis actress Sherry Stringfield felt that the filming schedule for ER was too grueling at the time and abruptly left the series part way through Season 2, despite having signed on for 5 seasons. Had she stayed, she may have been the next Mrs. Greene. By the time she had a change of heart and returned to the series, Dr. Corday, played by the amazing Alex Kingston, was already firmly planted as Dr. Greene's love interest on the show. The show toyed with this awkward "returning ex-girlfriend" idea by introducing noticeable tension between Doctors Corday and Lewis.

Sherry Stringfield as Dr. Susan Lewis was a great character, but she had the lousiest storylines of any of the main cast. First she had a boyfriend who had a nervous breakdown, then the endless drama with her crazy sister. Her and Mark had great chemistry and they would have been great together, but then you have no drama. Even when they brought her back they really didn't do much with her. Still it was always nice to see her. Not a fan of her hairstyle here, but she's still great. Check out the shade from Kerry when she asks where Susan has interviewed and then just leaves it with "Well, good luck with that.". Poor Susan.

When she came back, the show was transitioning from the old regime to the new one. Most of the originals were gone or on their way out, and Carter was about to step into a leadership role. The show, at that point, seemed to have passed her character by. Unfortunately, the character missed out on her prime years which would have been Seasons 3 through 6.

When SS came back, she didn’t want a lot of work. That’s the reason why we hardly saw Susan. Remember the reason she originally left was er was too many hours on set.

Unfortunately, Sherry Stringfield chose to leave right when the writers and producers were preparing to put them together. She just couldn't handle long shooting schedules after 2 seasons, and chose to leave. It's a shame. Had she stayed, there is no Elizabeth Corday character.

Aaaw Susan. She is one of my favorites characters of the show. I really love her scenes in the crossover with Third Watch. But i really regret the way she left the show. Can i ask you a request? Maybe posting the moment when weaver meets sandy and when sandy kissed her in front of everyone. And the scenes in Congo were all so intense but probably too violent for KZbin. When the nurse says "follow up with your regular healthcare provider" and the mom says "but this is our regular healthcare provider" that is so very true. People these days use the ER as primary care and come in for every damn thing. Stuff that has been going on for weeks or months and coming to an ER is going to fix that? Nope highly doubt it. People just think they get seen faster for all their BS stuff. Well guess what there is a little thing called triage. You may have to sit for hours or you may get lucky and get in right away all depends how things in the ER are going. People, STOP going to the ER for non emergent things. It's an EMERGENCY ROOM! Not a primary care room or I don't take care of myself and now I want you to fix all my problems room.

You do know that the real reason that so many people use the ER for primary care is that if they are uninsured, and don't have the money to pay upfront, primary care providers can deny care, but ERs have to provide care, or at least make sure they are stabilized?? Just another example of what crap the US healthcare system is!

Med students now tend to gravitate toward the specialties like surgery, dermatology, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, etc…Even the ones who do internal medicine residencies end up going into subspecialties like cardiology and gastroenterology. Primary care is relatively low pay and lacks glamour in the eyes of most med students and residents nowadays. Hence there is a dearth of primary care physicians, forcing more patients to use the ER.

And she quit that show before joining _ER._ She was lucky to land on back-to-back hit shows. She should be used as an example for actresses on how not to squander opportunities. In hindsight, yes, she should never have left _ER_ the first time around and should have "toughen it out" (in regards to the heavy work schedule and whatever reasons she want to leave).

And only an actor or actress will know what they can or can't handle. It's easy for us to say it, but we're not the ones living it. As she's older and wiser now, Sherry Stringfield regrets the decision. But back then, her mind was in a totally different place.

What was there to do? By the time she came back, Corday was already firmly implanted as Mark's love interest. They were married and had a baby. Not to mention, Anthony Edwards, who played Mark, was on his way out anyway and this was his last season. So anything they did do wouldn't have lasted.
