When I am not flying out of town for my regular day job, I am jumping out of planes as part of the counties fire department volunteer Emergency Mountain Rescue Team. My husband worries about me dropping into the middle of a firestorm, and when members of my team, who have the responsibility to keep me safe, start yelling at me to hurry the Hell up while I am trying to get IV lines in and stabilize victims, and I know there are frikken' flames everywhere, I know it is time to start being concerned, because these men are absolutely fearless and dead serious about getting everyone out of the area. So when these people bring me home safe, my husband shows his appreciation by making a huge dinner for my team. Your recipe was totally delicious and I can see why my husband thinks you are an OK guy. You now have a subscriber for life!

I learned to cook foods that you don’t use recipes for to cook from my momma, like gravy, fried chicken, roast, all kinds of breakfasts, all the basics, and then I have her recipes. I’m very blessed. 🥰

I made this and loved it. I didn't know we could've make this without boiling the shells? My recommendation is to have the sauce cover everything. Some of the of my shell ends were not completely covered and it became hard. But I put sauce over my left over and microwaved and it became soft.

Old timey recipes always call for sugar. I'm polish and my great grandmas/grandmas pierogi dough and filling calls for sugar (too much). They say it makes children sweeter, and in the dough a better carmelization (they didn't call it that though, I knew what they meant.) I always cut the sugar and the salt, but I always season water, and to taste. :)

Sarah you are so charming. I love to watch you. Well when my mother was making Yorkshire Puddings, she would say always show the mixture the water tap. What she meant by this was put about two teaspoons of water into the mix with the other ingredients because it helps the puddings to rise. I think the same applies to cake mixture and scone mixture too. Best wishes Ann

My mother taught me to never make use of powdered food seasoning. Fresh herbs are always the best! Plus, I learned from her how to cook PURPLE JAM, which you have to stir for 4-5 hours non-stop. I think I am born to be a social worker because whenever I cook I want to share it to the kids from our neighborhood and we also feed the orphans.

I always taste my sauce and only add sugar if the tomatoes are too acidic; but yeah, sugar is a great way to balance an acidic sauce and a pinch (1/2 teaspoon) will usually do the trick

My mum is sadly not a cooker. She has a few recipes that she's good with but she just doesn't enjoy it. Which is fine because I love it. I learned most of what I know from youtube cooks and chefs that I look up to. I did learn quite a bit in my short time in a commercial cookery course (I left realising a commercial kitchen was not for me) but 80% has been from the internet :)

My mother was a great cook. I remember taking a cooking class as an adult and making something I thought she'd love, but she was less than enthusiastic. I asked her what was wrong and she said, "It has too many flavors." I had to agree -- she was right! And so I'm skeptical of recipes with lots of ingredients. Sarah, your recipes never have "too many flavors."

When I visit my parents, my mother and I cook alongside one another. I would say the biggest thing I learned from her was "there is never a problem". Even though I have taken what she has taught be about cooking (Italian) food, I STILL flip out and go nuts on Sundays.. ALWAYS. It never fails. She always tells me to calm down and drink my coffee. Hahaha! And once in a while she will ask me "how should we do this Anthony? Do you think this will be good?" Trying to make me feel good! :)

My mum sadly passed away. She was a great cook. Unfortunately, I don't have any of her recipes or anything like that. Whenever I hear people talking about family recipes that bring back their childhoods it makes me want to curl up in bed and cry forever, because I don't have that. But then again, even if I did have any recipes, I don't think I'd be brave enough to cook them because I'd be crying instead of cooking and eating.
@kevinbyrne45388 жыл бұрын
No, no. Experiment. Try to recreate your mom's recipes. (It can be done.) If you succeed, others can enjoy her food and appreciate a little of what made you love her. And yes, you might cry at first, but you'll also remember the good times as well. She'll live on in your memory and in your cooking.

Mariam H. I found my grandmother's cookbook, and was able to recreate her chicken from the hand written notes she'd added to the inside cover. My house smelled like her house! It was a magical moment when I realized it, and I make that chicken regularly. Be brave - you won't be sorry.
@Bagiristka7 жыл бұрын
I am very sorry to read that and the first thing which came to my mind was that what you really have to do is to develop your own brand dishes, master them and teach your children telling them that you didn't have that experience, that made you feel really bad, but they do have it now and this whole new tradition is built in their grandmother's memory. If you haven't had some family tradition and that makes you feel sorry, that means that you must start it yourself in your family.
@michellesaari22635 жыл бұрын
I started a journal style cookbook and only put recipes that I have made and liked or created from scratch and added little notes like "Dad really liked this one" or "we make this for....." I even have spilled a drop of tomato sauce on one of the pages and I drew an arrow and said what it was. And I made it to pass it down to my Son so he can always have a way to me when I'm not around anymore.

On the other hand, my mom taught me that food is not the boss of me when I complain about not being able to cook a certain recipe. My mom taught me to trust my instincts and experience in the kitchen and when following recipes. Unfortunately not all recipes are as carefully tested as those coming out of the Martha Stewart kitchens, but trusting your instincts when something seems off can often help you avoid disaster. She also taught me how our food traditions keep lost loved ones present in our lives.

What did I learn from my mother about cooking? Season nothing ever, and then either fry it or boil all the nutrients out. Also, when you make spaghetti, make sure your sauce runs through the pasta like red water. She can at least make pretty good fried chicken, bisquets, and a decent meatloaf. But with everything else, well she can cook the flavor out of garlic.
