She's a damn good chef who can process any fish, even fugu (she has a license for it.) The man is blessed to have a wife like her.

It's not a misunderstanding. Earning a Michelin star is literally the tire company, saying that you have good food. The James Beard award, among others is where it counts. Real artists don't need cheap acolades, the food will speak for itself which will in turn bring honor to the chef. It doesn't have to be elegantly presented either, while it is true that "people eat with their eyes, first", a simplistic offering (such as nigiri sushi) done well, will bring respect to the craft, the food and the chef but, true craftsmen are well aware of this. Sushi shops & yakitori are perfect examples of this.
