Sushma recognizes that Asian and South Asian people are often met with societal expectations that many consider positive stereotypes. That doesn't mean they are good or desirable. People have asked, "What is it like being Indian?" And that's not a question a person can really answer. Sushma has so many thoughts on who she is and how queer creators fit into the world. Sushma's story was first recorded in 2018 in partnership with Interstate, an Asian-American pop-rock poetry musical about Dash, a transgender spoken word performer who becomes internet-famous along with his best friend Adrian, a lesbian singer-songwriter. Together, they embark on their first road trip across America. Their political and personal music inspires Henry, a transgender teenage vlogger living in small-town middle America, to set out on a quest to meet his heroes in person, hoping to find answers to his struggles. Kit Yan and Melissa Li wrote Interstate after their own real-life experiences as Good Asian Drivers, a band that brought queer Asian-American poetry and music to over 30 states in the late 2000s. Their producers, design team, and cast are comprised predominantly of women, LGBTQ+ and people of color. Instagram: @interstatemusical
