Your last tip is incorrect, I'm surprised you said that. It's always cool to have a cool jacket at the ready but having one or not does not make a difference. People like seeing suspenders if they are fashion minded and would not think "I can't believe that's just his out fit" due to the fact that the wearer could have just taken his jacket off, it being left in the car, left on a chair if they are out at a dinner or whatever the circumstance. It is only the wearer of the suspenders that is aware that it is his full outfit.

Hey thanks for the input, however the tip isn't "incorrect" it is actually proper etiquette when it comes with suspenders. They are/ were considered an undergarment, however now a days people have move away from that and have started to use them as "complete" outfits and ignore the rule either bc it doesn't suit what the want or because just because they dont know it even exists

The undershirt started as an undergarment. It's not exclusively that anymore thanks to WWII vets and Marlon Brando. The original "rules" of how something was meant to be worn are good to know, but you DO NOT have to follow all of those rules. The same applies with grammar. Our speech has evolved over the years, and while the rules are still important to know, people can break them, as long they know what they are doing. The greatest writers of all-time have all broken the rules of grammar at some point for the sake of implementing their own sense of style. The same applies in clothing fashion. If my sense of style indicates that I want to wear suspenders without a vest or a blazer, then I will damn well do it, AND LOOK GOOD!

Sir, your neck tie looks unseemly. Even though the width of the tie complements the width of the lapels. It is too long and tied primitively. If your going to op for a shirt collar that wide than give it some balance with a bigger knot such as a four in hand or full Windsor. Also, your suit is far from crisp. What's going on with that? A + for trying.

I used to wear clip-on for casual looks and button-ons with suits in the late 1990's- loved the look, but they were more common then. Seems like very few guys wear them now. Just turned 40- slim build. Too old to wear them or does it still work? Don't want to dress like a man in his 60's, but also don't want to look "middle aged trying to be young".

I don't carry a lot of weight on my waist, but I do run around and crouch alot at work, and a belt isn't really helping keep my pants up, it constantly sags over time so I'm thinking of using suspenders instead to mitigate re-tucking my shirt and hiking up my pants.

The exception to the belt/suspenders rule is if you are supporting a tool belt in which case it acceptable to have both.

Yes, I see this video is four years old, but people still view it, and so, with that, I will say the following: My man, I don't want to be negative, I really don't, but if you're coming onto youtube to educate, and teach, know that there are young impressionable guys coming on here who will consider what you say as gospel. So I will get right to it: 1. The jacket's shouders don't match your actual shoulders; the rippling on the shoulders of the jacket. 2. The construction of your tie doesn't allow it to be pinched so tightly; like out the rippling and shiting of the front blade from it's interlining. It's messy looking. It also doesn't help that the tie has not been closed closer over the top button of your shirt, which it should be. 3. Your suspender belt loops are not placed well - the two 'buttons' are right next to each other, when they should be split apart more. 4. your tip about colours - I get the impression that you yourself don't know the reason for going with 'neutral' colours. Also, I hate to say it, but you don't know what 'neutral', in reference to colour matching/choosing colours to accessorize with your suit, means. Your response clearly shows a lack of preparation to answer the question. There's nothing wrong with going through these introductory faux-pas or sartorial issues, but it's another thing to claim to be one to teach others, who most likley end up being impressionable. That cultivates poor habits amongst our youth when they should be developing some basic and simple rules of sartorial style (and yes, when they're comfortable with these rules, they'll be ready to break some where it fits with their personality, adding some sprezzatura!) I'll leave it at that and I hope that, since this video, you've fared farther along in your own sartorial journey and you're killing it now, with lessons learned, as we all are constantly going through.

Braces are the English term and suspenders are the American English term, it's pretty much interchangable in the USA and US English speaking countries but if you are in Britain or the Commonwealth call them braces as some people can be nitpicky about it.

There's a solution for getting buttons and keeping the belt loops .. .. let the tailor sew on the buttons on the inner side instead on the outside - voila!

yes maybe we should've clarified we never sew them on the outside always on the inside, however some men still argue that proper ettiquette is to remove the belt loops

Teachingmensfashion I think the best look is to buy suits or dress pants with side adjusters- no belt loops. They look great with button-on suspenders (buttons on the inside) or without. Belt never needed.

What about a holster and suspenders? I at times carry but I hate wearing hip holsters because my firearm drags most my pants to the side. I got a shoulder holster that's leather and a cross draw. Should I get ones that match the leather?

geno myster Funny, I asked Teachingmensfashion this one, not you cupcake. It isn't your concern or business. Reason why I am asking for THEIR OPINION is because I prefer my side arm to NOT stick out. I don't carry all the time but I live in a rural region where we don't have the luxury of Instant Police where I do got bears, cougars, coyotes, and Jehovah witnesses (Last one was a joke.) I keep a .44mag because a rifle is too clumsy to carry around where ever and I don't trust the concept of locking them up in my car. I had lots of run ins with large dangerous game animals and I would prefer not to be mauled in my best get up, I also wear suspenders mostly as well but with the holsters in market and my limited color choices I tend to not be in best interest as its BLACK or TAN for large caliber revolvers. Sorry they don't do Broadway song and dance numbers sunshine.... THEY WILL MAUL YOU even deer and elk if provoked (I know your laughing, I am serious, horned beast will gore you.) I also had times where I had to do a mercy kill on animals as they were suffering, I call in F&G and wait until they arrive next to the body unless the animal has something that is very survivable. (Something Urbanites like you seem to lack a concept of.) A guns a tool princess, I treat mine as such, and its my right to own one just like its my human right to live. I don't go flashing it, showing it off, don't wave it at towns folk not praying to use it accept maybe a range day with my friends. If this displeases you perhaps I can send you some cement so you can learn to harden up.

It is not for a fashion statement, it helps to keep your pants up, with belt, you need to pull your pants up many times, suspenders just keep your pants up, very elegant and comfortable and does not restrict your movement

Clip on suspenders don’t work for crap!!! Even with jeans!!!!! They keep popping off and look so weird cause all the pull is in one small point and the pressure just makes it give out. And you can’t move for anything or else they’ll come off
