Thank you so much for all your help! I am getting back into knitting after a three - year dry spell. I thought that ship had passed. I am working on a cardigan with a simple lace raglan detail. Wow!! Amazing skill! I am a recently returning to knitting beginner, having mostly done crochet projects.While knitting I have ripped back to correct errors and I use a very fine knitting needle to pick up the stitches so they won't pull on the next stitch. Then, I check for dropped stitches and catch them in a removable stitch marker ( working them up with a crochet hook if needed) so I can pick them up as I transfer my row, stitch by stitch, to the correct sized needle, making sure all the stitches are facing the right way. I thought I was excelling in ripping and redoing as I make lots of mistakes as I blaze new trails. But this video is awesome! I hope I never have to do it but, if need be, I will try it. Wish me luck! Thank you for your wonderful teaching videos.

Even though I figured out on my own how to do the drop down a column and fix my lace knitting, it is re-assuring I was doing it “According to Hoyle”, so to speak. I had used this technique to rework a column of cables before using it on lace, when I cabled front instead of back and though no one else could see it, I fixed it anyway. There are still times I rip as I was knitting a shawl and had three leaves in a decorative edge and I had put two. I did not have enough yarn then to fix the mistake. Hey, it happens. I decided to use it as an opportunity to place beads as with beading while I knit, I have to be more attentive. It came out great then. This is the advantage of buying good yarn also as it withstands being ripped out and re-knit, sometimes several times, as it is what you say, “mistakes just happen”.

@@SuzanneBryan I think that the transition from a student of a subject to perhaps not a master of it but one who works independently has to be the development of problem solving. Thinking about the use of tool and experimenting in swatching got me there. I don’t try a brainstorm out on a shawl or sweater, that I do not repeat the problem for myself in a swatch as I only want to rework the yarn once, not more than that. The other is just as you say, knitting for the sheer fun of it. I love how KZbin has these many videos where knitters are helping fellow knitters, introducing them to new pattern stitches which requires looking at projects differently. I find learning fun. It is sad when people don’t see the joy in it. I am almost 68 and knitting helps me keep my wits sharp, is marvelous for the memory. Counting, wow, I do that constantly. I am finding more use of stitch-markers and more ways to lose them also. LOL! The maintenance of memory is one of my chief interests as sadly, my father died of Alzheimer’s and I want to prevent that in myself, the other is hand therapy. I had such arthritis I could not knit and it dawned on me to experiment with an elimination diet, just avoiding one food at a time and that worked as instantly I picked the one I really had the problem with: all dairy. I substituted plant-based milks and my hands recovered. I’ve tweaked what I eat and vitamins, etc. It’s been ten years and I sightsee my wheelchair and only use it if I have a heavy box to wheel around and not myself. Knitting helped rehabilitate my sore fingers, improving circulation. I tried one style after another and just knit and did not make projects at first, just to help rid my fingers of painful deposits. I found eating kale extremely helpful and stopped taking the calcium pills. Knitting makes me happy and back when I went back to knitting, 10 years ago I was having memory issues and that did worry me a lot. The same things which benefitted my hands also benefitted my memory. Knitting itself is good at maintaining memory as there is a lot of repetition. Even so, the colors, and textures or lace emerging from the needles keeps me inspired. I used to use a calculator, but now I am guessing, that areas in the brain used in knitting also help math as I am working ratios in my head to make patterns fit me for socks but double check with a calculator and I am usually right all the time. Thank you for all your videos, they are so very practical and helpful.

This year, I reached the stage where I have zero issue with laddering down insanely low to fix a problem that only I deem a problem, that nooooooobody else would give two shakes of any animal’s tail about. So, naturally, I got excited when I saw you begin to take that section apart - it ‘is’ fun, and ‘’”””””p’rrrrrfulllllll””””’ feeling. Last year I got to the bored stage (my lack of ideas and resources) where I simply knit entire balls of yarn simply for the doing of it. Again, no issue with then unwravelling the entirety of them and doing som’n else with the yarn later. Not bad for a 50 year old!

I preferred knitting with ring markers because dangling markers are “fiddly.” Yep, my YOs occasionally migrated and as I did my OCD stitch counting on my early projects it took a while to figure out where a stitch went or why I had an extra one. You have convinced me to embrace dangling, fiddly markers. Using different edge markers to determine the right vs wrong side: brilliant! I wondered how you were going to move molecules to get the lifeline through the missed stitch. A removable marker - of course! Lifelines: I always frog to the lifeline. And cry. As you dropped those stitches I stopped breathing. “I hope it works. I hope it works.” Yay, it worked! I pinned the videos to my Pinterest “Knitting” board. Please let me know if I should remove them. Thank you.

This is fascinating! I do also have to wonder why you don’t have to work it back up by turning the work after each row? Obviously it can be done but I don’t understand the “why it works” part. Excellent video!
@SuzanneBryan4 жыл бұрын
Good question! It is much easier to follow the chart from the RS of the work. For the WS rows, you just work them as if they were RS rows.
@theastewart67214 жыл бұрын

You could use the right needle to place the strand over the left needle and then pass the stitch on the left needle over the strand. Great question. Happy knitting.

I love you video but when i repair lace i need to be able to “see” the strands in order. I use a blocking foam board and pin my project ‘loosely’. Keeping the re-knit area loose. I pin the top strand way out, the next, then next-each pin up and away in order, then i knit just like you 1 row at a time with dpns, sometimes using s smaller needle . So i would add these to your video- use a foam blocking board, and pin row yarns up and out of the way in order, then knit 1 row at a time with dpns, not worrying about tension etc. it will all block out later. Right? Love your videos.
@SuzanneBryan3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have seen that method done and it is probably better than what I show here. The next time I have a big mistake in lace and need to drop down, I will make a new video. Thank you for watching and commenting.

Great video, TYVM! I did this once but my tension was way off and I had spaghetti left all along one side of the repeat in lace weight yarn so I ended up frogging the me thing to the lifeline anyway. Any suggestions on how to work with better tension while repairing? I'm a flicker (a variation of throwing technique) knitter.
@SuzanneBryan5 жыл бұрын
I sometimes end up with extra yarn at the end too. You can use the point of a tapestry needle or knitting needle and move the excess yarn into the previous stitches one at a time. It may seem tedious, but it is way quicker then frogging and reknitting. It is good to use the same size needle for working the stitches back up as for the project. And, keep checking as you go along, on how much yarn is remaining for each row. Happy knitting.
@gothhabiba Жыл бұрын
I'd assume that, if the pattern calls for anything other than pearling all the way through on the return row, you'd need to work the stitches in the pattern "backwards" (in the opposite direction, changing pearls to knit stitches) when recovering the return row, since you're working them from the front?
@SuzanneBryan Жыл бұрын
Correct, or you could turn the work to work the WS rows
@tandwmerrill4 жыл бұрын
Hi. I’m confused. Why don’t you turn the work as you work the wrong and right side? Thanks for your great videos.
@SuzanneBryan4 жыл бұрын
With all the loose strands, that would be a little more difficult. Try it on a swatch and see what you think.

How do you FIND a mistake though? Like im knitting and get to the end of my row and realize im missing a stitch....how do i find where it was supposed to be?
@SuzanneBryan5 жыл бұрын
The best way to find mistakes is to always count back on the WS rows. If you place a marker between each pattern repeat, you will be able to instantly see where the mistake is. Most of the time it is just a forgotten yarnover. Hope this helps. Happy knitting.
