The reason they used cornstarch and not flour or sugar: Flour mixes with water and it becomes a paste Sugar dissolves in water Cornstarch absorbs water and thickens. That's why you can use cornstarch to make dry shampoo and not flour, or sugar. :)

Well, obviously not! As you said, cornstarch is only good for cooking, and there's a reason for that! But it still gave an opaque layer on the nail with the tip, whereas with flour and sugar it would just become a big mess xD Love your videos btw.

Good points but most nail polish isn't water based anyway so what you're saying almost has no relevance to this specifically. Small corrections: the property of being able to dissolve a substance in water makes it water soluble, neither cornstarch nor flour are water soluble substances, however you are right that sugar is water soluble. I don't know much of the science behind cornstarch but when mixed with water it becomes a suspension (the particles being suspended throughout the water mixture) and also a non-Newtonian fluid, like true quicksand, which might have given someone the idea to use it in this method. :)

I did this for about 6 months when I severely damaged my nails after I kept getting acrylic nails, this saved me!! I mixed clear polish and cornstarch to make a paste and found it really worked for me. It took about an hour each week but my nails were so bad I couldn't use my natural nail at all so I was willing to do it!

So I used hardening clear nail polish and flour (didn't have corn starch). I did three layers. Filed down. Shaped the nail and they are pretty strong and they have the tapping noise too. I work in retail stock and my nails haven't come off or bender it any way.

@@rashikamohata705 Well 1 fell off about a week and a half getting close to two weeks. But that was because it got caught in this metal thing. But the others remained strong. As a baker, I can fill you in as to why confectioner's sugar or flour wasn't used for this. First off, when confectioner's sugar comes into contact with a liquid or a moistener (At least in the amounts used here), it breaks down and dissolves into the liquid, leaving no form. Even if you were to have a higher confectioner's sugar ratio as opposed to your top coat, the consistency would NOT hold. Cake icing is a perfect example: it's basically a lot of confectioner's sugar with a little moisture, and that's not gonna hold up. Basically the same thing goes for salt and granulated sugar. As for flour, it might hold up it's form under certain circumstances, but it wouldn't set quickly enough, PLUS it has a much higher 'rot' factor. Cornstarch is something used to thicken gravies and sauces, hence a little bit of it in high moisture content. It's most basic function is a thickener and a stabilizer, which is exactly what it's doing on your nail.

Looks like the hate isn't for her reviewing or mentioning cornstarch nails. It's for _not_ embracing them more wholeheartedly. Somewhere in this comment section people are unsubscribing b/c they found Suzie too snobbish about the whole idea.

Love this! Most ‘professionals’ I’ve met in the beauty industry including nail professionals, hair stylists, and the like are so determined to prove nothing and no one can do it in any other way than the way they were taught and can be a bit nasty about it. I really like the way you treated the technique kindly and even expressed your ‘hope’ that it would work. Nothing but absolute respect for you and this video. You’re awesome!

This is the first time I heard of using cornstarch & I don't get acrylic nails anymore but when I saw this, I thought it was intriguing. I wonder if dusting it on lightly with a strainer isn't the problem. If you dipped the nail into the cornstarch, much more of the powder would be absorbed into the liquid, resulting in a stronger nail. Dusting is hit and miss and limits the amount of cornstarch. You could see that it was very spotty. Also, nail polish doesn't dry all that quickly. When I polish my nails I use a nail dryer or at least hold my hands in front of a fan to help dry each layer before adding another. I would think that would help as well, even if just for a minute or two between coats.
@shellz3295
@shellz3295 5 жыл бұрын
Yes Kathy I believe she's trying to disprove the cornstarch as any salesperson would want their products to be more desirable I have seen this many times with sales people the strainer is part of that I don't know why it's not more obvious two more people maybe they don't understand any of this process so they're easily fooled. I'm not an expert but yeah definitely makes sense to dry fingers under something that would dry instead of letting them sit like that like she would do with her clients... y'all let's just sit there with no dryer( too obvious) you have to dip your nails in the cornstarch she knows that already. I just find her tone annoying and patronizing as if her method is better building yada yada yada I'm an expert.

Suzi, here in Southern California none of the nail techs I've spoken to will do formed nails, they insist on tips. The answers I get are, "No good", "take too long", "too hard", "won't last", etc... chrissy j disagree. It takes me more time to use tips because you have to blend the tip with the nail, etc. The forms. I put them on only use what I need shape the general shape bam in 20 minutes I have all ten fingers are sculpted and that included during time. Tips would take me way longer because you have to size the tips. Glue them on. Blend them to the nail. Shape and shorten if need then put of the gel. Takes me 30 to 40 minutes depending on the person to use tips. And both this times are before filing and the design so I'll stick with my forms lol.

The reason for the corn starch is this: The other materials you mentioned (save flour) dissolve. But also, cornstarch makes a unique structure when it combines with the polish. That's my thought anyway, because of the way cornstarch makes a non-Newtonian fluid.

Cornstarch is used similarly to turn silicone into a mould~able and handle~able dough that "cures" faster, it works because the starch bonds to the solvent in the silicone/nail polish, and in the case of silicone _which cures from contact with water moisture_ introduces moisture to the silicone, but the caveat is that it is always FAR weaker than pure product, because the end result just has a bunch of starch throughout it with solvent soaked into it that may or may not ever fully escape. [In the case of silicone, which is porous, the acetic acid does escape, but leaves the starch there as a weak point that can take in new moisture at any time.] In the case of nail polish in particular, it means having a bunch of soft starch particulate worked throughout and when put on thick enough may mean it will never be able to fully cure because the surface will harden first and seal the solvent into the starch deeper down making it stay permanently sludgy. Building it up slowly may eventually "cure", but it would always be too weak to be good for nails, due to the presence of the starch. Starch is used rather than flour, or sugar or salt, because of it's fine~ness and it's ability to soak in a lot of moisture [even not purely water moisture] without dissolving. Flour would be worse, and chunky, and more opaque, crystalline things like salt or sugar would likely not work at all. A better solution may be building up layers of resin [aka acrylic or polish] with FIBERS in it [similar to the tea bag trick] where the fibers _in the right balance_ would add strength, build the shape, and not interfere with the evaporation of the solvent. [Think like how fiber glass is really strong, but don't actually work with fiberglass anywhere near your body as breathing it is is a huge health hazard and can cause permanent lung damage or even lung cancers.]

You do realize they make fiberglass nails right? They call them fiberglass wraps or silk wraps ( uses silk fibers not fiberglass).

They may very well make fiberglass nails, I would have assumed someone would have though of it, but they aren't going to be using any old fiberglass fibers to do them and especially without breathing equipment or masks, as fiberglass, when breathed in caused micro and not so micro damage to lung tissue. What I was getting at was don't just go around getting fiberglass fibers and using them to do your nails.
