Suzuki GSXR 750 ultimate track/road project - Episode 1 - Exhaust Installation - Knox Armour
After much deliberation and a bit of track experience last year, I’ve fallen back in love with my GSXR and even though there are some great new bikes out there, I’ve decided to keep it. But, there are some areas I want to improve and some areas that need to be addressed to make it perfect…
So, without further ado, welcome to a new series on the Knox armour KZbin channel, a project where we'll be making my Suzuki GSXR 750 the ultimate 50% track bike, 50% road bike, making upgrades, learning and having a laugh along the way.
This episode is about sorting the power out once and for all. My bike came with a full system exhaust when I bought it and I thought it was great… roll on my first track day and the realisation that I couldn’t ride it as it was due to the noise restrictions on UK track days and I didn’t want to be turned away before even turning a wheel, so I sought about fixing it.
Like most things in life, it turns out its not that straight forward and while the baffle I sourced from GPR exhausts helped the sound, it drained a lot of the power and punch on track… just what you want when you are on an unrestricted race track! A remap and dyno session at Jordan Bikes confirmed that!
So, in this video, I go part way to solving that and remove the aftermarket full system exhaust and install a GSXR 750 standard exhaust for the sake of a good balance of performance gains and noise control. Stock exhaust vs Full system exhaust sounds crazy, but having now ridden the bike, I am pretty confident that the end result will be great!
Hope you enjoyed this one, please let me know what you think and tune back in for the next episode where we’ve got something else really cool planned!

Aaron

Hope everyone is enjoying the series! We have set up a playlist where you can see all the episodes of the GSXR750 project and the updated video to this one is now live on kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXeTdHqHlJurirM. In this next video, we took it back to get remapped with the stock exhaust back on and got some very interesting results!! 👍Aaron Knox

I have the exact same K8 750. Same color. Stock pipe and I love it. The back pressure and subsequent low end power and grunt created by the servo valves in the factory exhaust is what makes the 750 so special. You might gain a couple mph at the top with an aftermarket system but you lose all the low end punch that makes the 750 such a blast to ride. Added bonus: with the factory system you can hear the servos in the exhaust and it sounds awesome! Doesn’t look as bad as some factory pipes either which is nice.

This is probably a KZbin first in the motorcycle community history that someone replace a full system with stock exhaust including the catalytic converter. Great video as always looking forward to seeing more from this project got a little sneak at the K-tech forks this is already shaping up to be a great series 🙌

Good for you , it's a first to see someone going back to stock but if it feels better and rides better that's all that counts , I put a full yoshimura system on mine and the noise reading was 101.8 dB . Looking forward to seeing how it all goes 👍
@KnoxArmour

Thanks, I'm sure the full Yoshimura is a much better full system than the one I removed. Even then, I now don't have any worries about whoever sound tests it, I know some marshalls are really harsh and others more lenient.. it just wont be an issue now at all. Looking forward to seeing how the new exhaust performs in a few weeks and to put the issue behind me and move forward to other things. Thanks, Aaron KNOX

I was going to say 5 KG! crazy heavy the standard equipment. Must be an aftermarket option.. my Spark ti system on my GSXR1000R was pretty quiet with baffle in.. think it was 101 which doesn't help at 98db tracks though 😒
@KnoxArmour
@KnoxArmour 3 жыл бұрын
Haha, in fairness its the Cat that is the heavier bit, the end can was actually quite light... I've got a plan for saving the 5kg... slim fast 🤣! Well yes, mine was down the 99db ish with baffle, but in doing so killed the power, hence the need to fix. Full systems are great for peak power, but pretty poor at controlling noise. Aaron.

Probably the best idea to lose some of your mass (you and me both!). Lowering the rolling mass is also good, but light wheels can be prohibitively expensive. The bike might still benefit from a retune even with the stock exhaust. Great video. Keep them coming. The stock exhaust does look good btw.
@KnoxArmour
@KnoxArmour 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes the weight loss from that area is the plan, much cheaper than any aftermarket upgrade 😉! Got the bike booked back in for the retune and to get the servo reconnected (think it's been powered off via the ecu). Hopefully will get some pretty good results 👍

Thanks! Actually no, for this project series we want to keep it a bit more realistic and accessible in terms of price. Think carbon wheels are about £3k here in the UK and the bike is worth only about £5k, so it probably wouldnt make much sense. We'll go the cheaper option and loose the weight by eating less! 🤣 Aaron KNOX

I understand putting the stock exhaust on for the noise regulations, but for it to be running better? Something's not adding up, the graph that was displayed with the air/fuel ratio was all over the place with the aftermarket exhaust. If the restrictions were removed from the ECU and the air/fuel ratio is corrected, even with a crappy slip on and a decat link pipe you're still looking at a huge improvement no matter what. Like I said something is not adding up here lol.
@KnoxArmour
@KnoxArmour 3 жыл бұрын
The main issue is that you have to baffle the full system exhaust because it is too loud for track days. This then kills the power. Had it mapped perfectly with baffle in place and results were not good. Stay tuned for the next episode where we'll share the results!

@KnoxArmour Жыл бұрын
Cool. We ended up remapping the bike with the stock exhaust fitted and its now 131hp at the rear wheel which is about what these bikes can make without engine work. Don't think a slip on will do much tbh, as the stock one is straight through without much restriction. For full racing, course a high quality full system may give a bit more top end power. Hope that helps, Aaron KNOX

@KnoxArmour
@KnoxArmour 3 жыл бұрын
Good question, but actually, we were advised that an important part of the noise control is the catalytic converter. Very few are anywhere near standard and most of the 'improvements' have actually made the bike worse.
