The Suzuki RG50 Gamma: A Classic 1990s Icon
Introduction
In the world of two-wheeled legends, the 1990 Suzuki RG50 Gamma shines brightly. A member of the esteemed RG series, this 50cc motorcycle captured the hearts of enthusiasts with its sleek design, impressive performance, and a touch of racing heritage. In this blog post, we'll take a trip down memory lane to explore the history of the Suzuki RG50 range and delve into the specifications that made the 1990 model a standout in its class.
The History of the Suzuki RG50 Range
The Suzuki RG series has a storied history, with its origins dating back to the 1970s. These bikes were renowned for their racing pedigree and served as the stepping stones for many aspiring racers. The "RG" in the name stands for "Road and Grand Prix," reflecting the blend of road-worthy features and racing performance that Suzuki aimed to achieve.
The RG50 Gamma made its debut in the 1980s and continued to evolve throughout the decade. By the time the 1990 model rolled out, it had become a well-respected member of the RG family, known for its cutting-edge technology and innovative design.
Specifications of the 1990 Suzuki RG50 Gamma
Engine: The heart of the RG50 Gamma was its liquid-cooled, two-stroke, single-cylinder engine. With a displacement of 49cc, it might not have seemed like much, but it packed a punch. The engine featured Suzuki's Automatic Exhaust Control (AEC) system, which optimised exhaust port timing for improved power delivery and efficiency.
Power Output: Despite its small size, the RG50 Gamma produced an impressive 7.5 horsepower, making it a capable performer in its class. Its two-stroke nature gave it a distinctive powerband, delivering a thrilling surge of acceleration.
Chassis: The RG50 featured a lightweight, aluminum twin-spar frame that was both nimble and stable. This frame, coupled with a sophisticated suspension setup, offered precise handling, making it a joy to ride on twisty roads.
Brakes: The braking system consisted of front and rear disc brakes, a feature not commonly found in 50cc bikes of that era. This setup provided reliable stopping power and enhanced safety.
Design: The RG50 Gamma boasted a sleek and aerodynamic design, reminiscent of its larger displacement siblings in the RG series. Its fairings and styling cues were influenced by Suzuki's racing heritage, giving it a sporty and aggressive appearance.
Transmission: It came equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission, allowing riders to fully exploit the engine's power and extract maximum performance.
Racing Pedigree: Suzuki's racing expertise was evident in the RG50's design, and it was a popular choice for riders looking to hone their skills on the track.
Conclusion
The 1990 Suzuki RG50 Gamma is a testament to Suzuki's commitment to blending racing technology with everyday practicality. Its small size didn't deter it from delivering an exhilarating riding experience, making it a beloved choice for both novice riders and enthusiasts. The RG50 Gamma is more than just a motorcycle; it's a symbol of an era when small-displacement bikes could pack a big punch. Today, it remains a sought-after collectible for those who appreciate the beauty of classic two-wheelers and the thrill of riding a piece of motorcycle history.

"The engine featured Suzuki's Automatic Exhaust Control (AEC) system, which optimised exhaust port timing for improved power delivery and efficiency." This sounds interesting, would like to see more of this. Is it otherwise the same engine as in the ts50x model?

Hi I think you are right the engines are very similar if not the same but there just seemed to be better performance out of the RG because of the exhaust. I have also used expansion pipes ion these bikes to get them even faster - What are your thoughts?
