Roshi doesn't care about winning the tournament for his own glory, if he wanted to be recognized as the world champion he would have competed in all the tournaments over the years instead of being a hermit on an island and he would have entered under his own identity. He's genuinely only doing this to give Goku a ghost to chase, a level to keep pushing himself towards. Goku loves fighting but even he wouldn't push himself further unless he knew there's someone out there who's stronger than him

Exactly. Well said. He even explained that to Nam. Guess Suzy forgot. Plus Roshi has years upon years of Martial Arts experience compared to Goku, so it's clear why he ended up winning in the end. In the end he succeeded in his main goal to inspire Goku and Krillin to continue their Martial Arts training and grow as individuals.

@yomama629 except Goku already had a ghost to chase. Roshi simply didn't know. Goku was already going to try and be stronger than the giant monster that destroyed the castle. He has no clue that it was him. So he wanted to get so strong he could destroy a castle himself.

The insert song in this episode is known as Mezase Tenkaichi and it's such a banger! What's crazy is that you wouldn't have been able to hear it in the dub if you were watching this off of the official DVDs or on streaming sites, as Funimation couldn't get the rights to use it. As a result, it's left without any music for the scene which is a real shame. Fortunately you are watching the best version possible that was produced by dedicated fans, with proper color correction, great signs and song subtitles and best of all, all insert songs re-inserted in the English dub! Props to you for reacting to this version and I look forward to seeing more DB reacts going forward.

I'd argue maybe the best possible version has Japanese audio. That's mostly my preference, but if you compare the two, the English dub added a lot of dialogue where the Japanese has none, so it's much harder to hear the song. No dialogue is sometimes a good thing. Also, there's the censorship to consider; the dub changed a ton of lewd jokes.

Roshi casually being a moon buster at episode 28 is impressive.

Yeah piccolo jr in the start of z violently fragments and explodes the moon in a way that was calced from small to large planet level. Radditz and nappa are large planet tier busters. And vegeta is calced at dwarf star to star level. Dragon ball scaling is crazy specially when z starts.

Let’s be real Roshi would have won if it wasn’t for the Giant Ape transformation. Goku was literally about to quit. Love Goku but he wasn’t strong enough at this point to beat Roshi. Also reminder, Roshi already helped Nam with his water crisis.

Fun fact: before the chapter was released, the magazine actually did a poll on which one should win the tournament. Majority wants Goku to win. Then Akira Toriyama decided to let master Roshi win because of the poll so Goku can have room the grow.

The boys' power with low experience is exactly what Master Roshi is afraid of. They could mop the floor with almost all competitors; but the TRULY strong don't even bother with going to tournaments! Rest assured that the boys have only started an unending journey. As you can see with the moon getting blown up, the power levels are already cosmic level, at least in a cartoony sense. It's one of the reasons why Dragonball characters rank so high in 'Who's Stronger Than Who" arguments. In my opinion, the Filler episodes in Dragonball are well worth watching; they really tend to flesh out the world and add to the story. Unfortunately, the Filler episodes of Dragonball Z seem to be less useful and sometimes story-breaking.

After experiencing it myself, I too want to re-live that moment. Watching you watch it for the first time is pretty close, and it's only elevated more because you have little knowledge of DBZ. Everyone i know(including me) saw DBZ before watching DB, and it it great to see your anticipation on the events that are about to transpire on the screen. I look forward to this everyday

I am so glad you are at least not watching the normal English Dub. Them removing Mezase Tenkaichi playing in the background of the ending of Jackie Chun and Goku's fight is an utter crime in the normal dub x_x that song along with the intensity of the fighting and them wearing themselves down to only doing melee fighting makes it arguably the best fight of the series to me.

@@gurvmlk Super doesn't retcon GT. GT was never canon, but Super is. So Super can't retcon GT, because they are essentially two completely different continuities. GT is more like a spin-off, similar to Super Dragonball Heroes (something literally nobody seems to talk about, even though it's also a Dragonball series set after the end of the currently last DBS arc [ToP]) xD So when it comes to watching GT or Super after Z, I say it all depends how the movies are watched (if they are watched), as the movies would fall into the same category as GT. Different continuity, not canon. So if the movies are watched while watching DBZ, I'd say continue with GT first and Super after ... if the movies are not watched while watching DBZ, continue with Super, as that's the story that was envisioned and then watch the movies and DBGT after Super.

But it did not result in a different continuity, it was a different continuity from the very first episode of GT that aired back in 1996 (in Japan). Super didn't cause it to be a different continuity, as Super wasn't even a thought back then. "Also, to my vague understanding, it was more nonsensical fan service than a coherent continuation." It's promotion for the card game and the arcade automats (which afaik don't exist outside of Japan). So yes, it has nothing to do with the Dragonball canon. But the same goes for GT ... except that it wasn't promotional material for anything, it was just a Toei production, because they wanted to milk Dragonball a little more. It was never meant to be an official continuation of the show (at least not when we ask the late Akira Toriyama [RIP]).

Dragon Ball always made me want Chinese. Also Roshi beat Goku multiple times over. First he used the hypnotize to knock him out, announcer hesitated too long to start counting and also it was cheated because Bulma interfered with it. Roshi knocked out Goku in gorilla form as well. If Roshi did aim that shot at Goku, Goku would definitely been dead. Roshi used all his energy to destroy the damn moon as well so he wasn't even at full strength.

There's one unfortunate thing with the English dub, though: they added a lot of dialogue, and some of it is right over the songs (I understand Funimation didn't include them originally, due to lack of rights, so that would explain it, though even in many other places, they still added a lot of dialogue), whereas the original Japanese only has a little dialogue over them.

Filler or not I would watch the reactions. I don't like it when people say they haven't watched something and then skip what is known as filler because the fans say to. Or do because they don't think it will get the views. They way I see it is if you haven't seen something watch it all and the fans can deal with it and the view while important should be a reason to not show something. This goes for all shows not just Dragon Ball.

It was a good short episode. The tournament was now a true piece of entertainment. Roshi wants Goku to explore better things than just earning money. They could have at least invited Nam for victory eating. I'm sure they will flush the money through the toilet due to overeating LOL. Also, I can relate to overeating in my culture, which has multiple meanings depending on the context - either the person has a good appetite or the person is poor.

Seeing your reactions to Dragon Ball makes me wonder how you would react to Saint Seiya (sorry for the DB fans, but Saint Seiya was and will always be #1 in my heart). I know there's plenty of time before you'll finish Dragon Ball, not to mention DBZ, and also, I don't even know if there is an other english dub for Saint Seiya other than the atrocious american version that butchered the show (or at least, that's what I've heard). But I made a search, and I couldn't find a single person, neither in english nor in french, that reacted to it. And it's such a shame. Well if Goku didn't turn into an uncontrollable monster which wanted to destroy everything and kill everyone Roshi didn't have to use most of his power to destroy the moon. Then the fight would have been more fair and balanced. I think Roshi winning this is fair. Goku will become stronger and make it next time!

I'd say Goku deserved better than to win. It's not like either of them has any interest in being the world champion anyway; Goku just hasn't learned that there may ever be anything more important to him than satisfying his desire to beat everything in front of him that looks like a challenge. And unfortunately, he's too powerful to not need that lesson. There is a reason "cute" normally accompanies "weak" - and in the cases it doesn't the owner of the appelations usually chooses to hide one or the other for everyone else's benefit. Oh, and that capsule Jackie gave Name? Far more expensive than you think; normally all the matter stored inside a specific-purpose capsule has to be prepared especially for storage. It's why Oolong's mobile home was designated "for emergency use" - you can't just go to a gas station and supermarket to refill and put the mobile home away again. And Bulma's father being the inventory of capsule technology means you can't use the way she treats capsules as an example; she CAN semiconveniently get everything resupplied. Jackie Chun was here carrying out the Roshi tradition of casually handing out precious and nearly irreplacable treasures.

The only thing that being filler means that is that it's not in the continuity toriyama drew directly (or at least it's not proven to be so). The anime is a different continuity. So no it happened (if it's on tv in the series it happened whether you like the content or not).

Team Roshi lesssgoooo ez clap!! git gudder goku x) on the real though, Roshi's wisdom on winning to keep goku wanting to train and get stronger is extremely important, especially when it comes to the entire franchise, not jus dragonball. Had Goku won, Goku would not want to train and fight cuz he would prob feel like he is on top and has done it all and is the best of the best, which would cause a problem for future villains that come along who are wayyyyy stronger than any1 goku had ever faced, in addition to also being villains that want to rule or destroy people, if not the world. Goku would be unprepared and would lose/die. And i guess for the record, Roshi is my #1 fav character in the whole franchise, followed by Krillin at #2; Goku is somewhere btwn #3-5, idk. Quite a few characters between OG DB and DBZ that are so dam good. :)
