I have thought about it recently and I think it was either luck or big brain from Taki's part. When she fell and opened her hand, she was looking for his name. I guess the parts of our brain in charge of recording memories aren't properly functioning yet when we're just waking up. I've had dreams with something I really want to remember (plot, setting, invention or something like that) that sort of happen like episodes of a TV show, like there's continuity in the dreams. I went and immediately grabbed paper after I woke and drew most of what I remember still. But very soon afterwards like 3-5mins I will forget all the details I haven't yet drawn out yet. So that seen felt quite relatable to me. And when I dream of that dream again in the future, I would remember I've dreamed this dream before.

The "I love you" message was actually the key. Taki knew first hand how the space and time continuum will try to normalize itself and his name will get erased like her diary entries in his phone. The message he wrote is not enough of a tangible information that's going to break the "rule" so it's allowed to stay. Feeling transcend space and time.

Well it can mean that but it generally means that the person who has cut their hair found or are looking for resolve. It looks for closure and hopeful growth as they leave a piece of themselves behind, Mitsuha at the moment came to decide that she should move on, so she cuts her hair to symbolize that. This also fits when she gave away her string to Taki, something she uses to hold her hair up and has a lot of importance. Of course, it can mean a breakup has happened but that’s not the only case in cultures/ themes that involve cutting hair :)

20:25+ That "a girl", "a gal", " a guy" translation is an example of how hard it can be to convey language differences when you sub or dub a movie. It's hilarious in Japanese because the difference IS there, but it's weird in English where the words (and their places in a sentence) are not so well defined. ( "I" )
@jiayi26503 жыл бұрын

yeah the people behind the dubs changed the actual words but managed to roughly keep the meaning how mitsuha refers to herself as a girl instead of a guy. But in the japanese version she was just using the wrong pronouns to refer to her/himself. one website i used to watch the movie had “I (feminine)” “I (masculine)” and so on as the subtitles and that scene made more sense that way
@InDeathWeLove2 жыл бұрын
@@isaiaha8395 Then she goes to boku which is the general masculine term for I, but ore is generally what is used by men in very familiar settings and is considered a very informal way to refer to yourself so either implies the person you are speaking with is very close with you and since she has no clue how close she is to them that's the one she uses last though it's the one they are used to Taki using with them.

there is a posibility that mitsuha will write i love u, but for mitsuha to wrote her name starts with vertical line its just not possible... either if she write in hiragana みつは or kanji 三葉, both will start with horizontal line. but the posibility for the i love u すきだ exist because it also starts with horizontal line... its genius because it leaves to audience to prefer which. personally i want mitsuha to write just her name for reason that i see fit to me... but because it ambiguous, u can prefer i love u...
@Sergio-dn2hz2 жыл бұрын
@@sentival i think its a bit deeper than that. I remind u that Mitsuha was already dead by the meteor on the original Taki's timeline. For those of you wondering: the memory of them being the other person fades away after they switch back - the same way our dreams fade away when we wake up. That's why they initially thought they were just dreaming after switching back. And that's also why times after times they only remembered limited information, for example Taki remembered what the town looks like but not the town's name; Mitsuha remembered the area Taki was in but not his address etc.
@roronikkozoro2 жыл бұрын
This may explain why when Mitsuha went to Tokyo to find Taki and introduced herself to him, he doesn’t recognize her at all since he only started to switch places with her 3 years into the future. She assumed that he also knows her since I think in her mind they switch places at her timeline when it’s not the case at all. Add to what you said that they can only remember fragments of what they saw after they switch back to their own bodies, so she may not remember that every time she switch place that she was in the future. Same thing with Taki. He thought he was switching places with her during his timeline. So, when he thought that he could see her face to face, he had no idea that she, along with the town, died 3 years ago. This movie is a masterpiece. ☄️💫

@All_Beef_Hotdog2 жыл бұрын
I think the thing that hurts me the most about this movie is the not knowing. Not US not knowing, but THEM not knowing. We watched these characters go through an incredible adventure together. They switch bodies, learn more about each other than most people could ever hope to learn about their significant other, and fall in love. The boundaries of time keep them separated, and they learn that Mitsuha is actually dead. Taki does everything he can to prevent her death, meets her for the first time face-to-face in a place outside of time, and even sacrifices their memories of each other in order to alter fate. Because he wrote “I love you” on her hand instead of his name, the moon god protected their hearts and retained the feelings of love they had for each other, even if they didn’t know who that person was anymore. Eventually, after several years of searching without knowing what they’re searching for, the pair are reunited. We know it’s a happy ending. They reunite and the love never faded. But as the viewer, it destroys me to see this incredible adventure between these two, the things they did for one another, the feelings they have for one another, and especially the emotions they both had (especially Mitsuha) when they finally met during twilight, only for that all to be forgotten. It’s devastating to see all of those memories of the young love they shared fade. But I’m happy that they do find each other again and they realize, when they do see each other face-to-face again, that they realize that, even though they don’t know who or why, they’ve finally found the piece of them that’s been missing the whole time
I watched this movie 4 times in the last 7 years, That's how much I love it. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels it so much

This is one of the movies I own in almost all formats it was distributed. Always makes me cry, and every time I watch it, it feels like the first time I watched it. Someone might have said it, but it's not Ghibli, but it certainly feel like it. It just pulls your heart all over the place, it brings up a range of emotions that you have either never felt before or at least never felt all at the same time. Loved your reaction to it!
I think a lot of the things that confused you while watching this got actually lost in translation or was just easier to clarify in Japanese. The parts where the grandma gets philosophical were also much better in Japanese in my opinion. Also some things were just meant to be vague I think. Like, they said in the beginning of the movie that they lost almost all memory of these dreams in which they switched bodies with a different person. That's also the reason why he can't remember the name of the village she lives in but only these images that he is trying to hold on to by drawing them. Anyways, I loved seeing your reaction and I am looking forward to seeing the other movies you have planned for the next couple of days with you. :)

Because when Taki finally turned at the end I was crying worse than Mitsuha, and as the end credits rolled and I continued crying I suddenly realized that this had been just what I needed and that it actually felt good to just really let go and cry from my heart instead of (consciously or not) trying to suppress the urge. I've cried in many more movies since and it has enriched my experience of all of them.

in the book/novel it was explained that Taki figured out that writing down a name would just simply vanish just like how the notes in their phone did. so he was able to come up with an idea that even if they forgot each other's name, even if all the evidence of their existence were to be erased, their feelings for each other won't. that's why he wrote "i love you" instead of his name. there are a lot more in the book/novel that they weren't able to add to the movie due to the budget. Makoto Shinkai (the writter and director of the film) even said that the movie is cut short and that it's "incomplete and unbalanced".

I have already seen a few of Makoto Shinkai’s work before, but THIS movie proves he can do so much more than impressive visuals and thematic elements alone. He really set up the story on an emotional level. The moral: Trust your heart by running down the uncertain path and see that you’ll feel this sense of yearning you never knew you had.

I watched 'Weathering with you' & was pleasantly surprised to see Taki & Mitsuha's cameo in that movie.

Them crossing the bridge but not acknowledging each other is a play on a trope from the director's previous movie 3cm per Second. In that story, the lead characters (who were in love when they were younger), simply cross paths on a bridge, never look back and go on with their lives. A lot of fans were scared he was going to pull the same thing in this movie where the main characters also didn't get together in the end.

my wife and I put this movie in the "nope" box. We've watched it exactly ONCE as a couple. We don't ever mess with it. Its too hard.

2:16 ... But, it is Summer time at least in the Southern Hemisphere. 11:07 I was thinking more of a human sacrifice. 17:13 Same, I also turn it off instantly. Although I usually wake up before the alarm goes off. 11th time watching this and still cried a bunch.
