one of the few pros of push rod engines! easy to adjust the valve clearance! the problem is that youve gotta do it so often. just like brittish water pipes. lets stick them on the outside of the house so when they freeze and break they are easy to change! the problem is that they freeze and break often when you put then on the outside!

I have a 2002 SV650 and after checking valve clearance I have one 0.18.....needs adjustment...yet to do....ready for your next video Matt
@samuelatwick11306 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt, you should measure that one “loose” valve with the cam lobe pointing either 90 or 270 degrees from the valve because of the de-compressor!

how to adjust ?, i can hear a ticking on my 03. had a guy listen to it and he says its ok. but i need to know how to fix the problem, since i can not afford to take to shop

I guess on Ducati you can’t really tell, cuz all the noise those make?

That compression release system is pressing it .

pressing it?

The Workshop pushing the valve down. Measure it with cam almost pointing to side.

Have you done the valves on the SV in the passed? Just seem strange that the gaps seem to have grown in size..In my experience this type of bucket an shim with direct overhead cams, usually the gaps get smaller..
@thedirtyworkshop6 жыл бұрын
Have you done the valves on the SV in the passed? - no. But I get where you're going.
@empanada4016 жыл бұрын
Derick Relph Gap will get smaller if the valves are eating the valve seats.
@relph36 жыл бұрын
Yes. and this is the point. Normally you would see a narrowing of the gap.. The only thing I can think of if the gap is getting bigger is a build up of carbon on the valve seats..
@thedirtyworkshop6 жыл бұрын
Keep guessing Derek!
@relph36 жыл бұрын
Humm.. Wrong shim size previously put in or the surface of the bucket has worn.. The latter would probably show visible wear..
@AfricaTwin-Stuff6 жыл бұрын
Why such a gap? I always believed clearances got smaller over time.

Possibly, but you have a honda, so could be something else... or it's not worth worrying about. This is hard to answer through a comment

Hey, thank you for this video. 👍I did watch Part 2 and it was very informative. Sorry for my lack of understanding the point, I still can't figure out, did the valve adjustment solved that ticking, was it decompressor making that ticking or something else? Thank you very much in advance for your answer.

Is that much normal for that engine with as many kilometers as you have on it? Or is the valve seat damaged? Maybe bent valve? Seems like clearance should get tighter, not looser with normal wear unless the super hard shims are worn (never seen one of those shims get worn).
@thedirtyworkshop6 жыл бұрын
More on all this later. :)

The compression release is loose on the cam.
@thedirtyworkshop6 жыл бұрын
Prize? ;)
@mcfast526 жыл бұрын
Once you remover the cam you will see the compression release assembly can rotate a bit on the cam and that can cause a ticking noise.
@thedirtyworkshop6 жыл бұрын
Prize? ;)
@johnycomenicky6 жыл бұрын
If it wasn't the compression release... Obviously clearances tighten over time but I have seen screw and lock nut set ups on the 1. 2. 5s. start ticking ...what would cause such a thing if the lock nut is still tight of course :)

Great vid, lovely bike. Have you ever bothered with TL’s?
@thedirtyworkshop6 жыл бұрын
No - But seen as though I have the SV - there's no point bothering. I know the TL has slightly more aggressive cams and the porting is slightly different but the chassis is fucking awful!
@davespooney84726 жыл бұрын
The Workshop - yeah, seen an old Fast Bikes vid and the TL really, properly struggled. Was quite hilarious, the guy (a BSB rider I think) was monkeying around all over it trying to get it to turn in. Iconic engines though...

@thedirtyworkshop6 жыл бұрын
49,689.
@raydavison29726 жыл бұрын
I was going to say maybe the clearances have never been touched before but it would be surprising at that mileage. Having said that, once out of warranty, many people just run them for a while then sell them on and with each successive owner they are less willing to spend time and money on them. Unless they are called Matt of course!

Nowt too wrong with valve ticking as long as its not a clang! it does tell you that you still have clearance! Its when it goes quiet you need to worry... My GT550 kwak used to sound like a Jewellers watch display after I'd done the clearances...

I like crappy old SOHC bikes, take off the valve access ports, check clearances, loosing with wrench, adjust with screw driver, tighten on correct size shim, recheck, put it all back together... None of this take the bike half way apart crap like the SV or my T100... The T100 is due for another check of the clearances again...
