Scuba Diving with SHARKS!! Bassas Da India - Sailing SV Delos Ep. 100

Sailing to South Africa we stop at remote Bassas Da India for a shark diving expedition!!! It was really sad to leave our beloved Madagascar but at the same time I felt incredibly excited to explore a new continent. We made plans to stop for some Scuba Diving at Bassas Da India, an extremely remote sunken atoll out in the middle of the Mozambique channel. No people, no land, and hundreds of sharks! This was extreme diving for sure and I definitely felt nervous, we had sharks circling us the whole time and a huge grouper almost swallowed our Gopro + Brian’s hand!

The bioluminescent Attola jellyfish emits circular blue light that lights up other surrounding mass to create a false pretense of predators so that they may evade giant squid. They were lighting up your hull to make it seem like your boat was a giant predator to "actual"predators. They used your boat to scare away other larger creature that could quite possible eat them. Pretty cool huh??!!!!

I love to watch you guys sail, for a couple of washies you have turned out to be some of the best sailors out there. I think this is one of my favorite episodes. Because of you Brian and crew i have owned my own sailboat now for two years (27 O'Day) and will be going up to a 34 this spring. Thank you! Thank you... Thank you... THAT is the sailing I know and miss very much. That brought back so many memories being able to see your journey through your eyes. I really appreciate you taking the time to detail the shifts and the sailing. If you guys are up for it, I would suggest if you're out in the middle of the ocean again when it's calm or dead calm, tie a lead weight off to a 60' line that is tethered to Delos. Then using 2 locking carabiners, tether a 40' line between you and the downline. Then go for a night drift dive underneath the boat. This way, no one has to get worried about drifting off into the deep blue while being able to roam in the upper thermocline. About 4 or 5 hours after sundown, the small gelatinous fauna, like ctenophores will start reaching the surface to graze on the plankton. And while they are small, their bioluminescence is beautiful. I think you'll really enjoy it.

Delos crew you've outdone yourself this time. What an awesome video, and 28 minutes of it too! This may be my favorite Delos video of all. Why? Because I love sailing and your videos at sea are far more interesting to me than those on land. Also as my wife and I dove for 20 years I really enjoy your dive video too. 99% of the time I'm sitting at my computer I have a video running in one corner of my screen while I do other things.
