SVS President Gary Yacoubian discusses how the SVS Prime Elevation speaker became the world's most versatile high performance home theater speaker.
Immersive audio formats such as Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and Auro-3D are pushing the boundaries of home theater and music beyond a single plane of surround sound into the realm of height effects, where sound emanates from speakers above and all around. Learn about height effects speakers and why the Prime Elevation's direct radiating approach offers superior sonic impact and immersion compared to the ceiling bounce technique deployed by other Dolby Atmos height speakers.
You'll also understand all the ways SVS Prime Elevation can be used in a home theater surround sound system, including as a center channel, L/R mains, side or rear surround or LCR speaker and how the Multi-Angle Wall Bracket makes mounting on the wall or ceiling, simple and quick.

Just bought the SVS PB 2000. The entire buying experience was stellar to say least! Amazing customer service reps who are not only responsive but never try to sell you on anything, just honest and straightforward answers to your questions. The PB 2000 is a beast. Love the sub and planning to replace my Definitive Technology Pro Cinema 600 with the Prime Elevation speakers. One thing I don’t like and hope SVS changes, is the higher price for the piano black and White speakers. I shouldn’t have to pay $50 more for the same speakers in a different finish! Thanks guys! I am a customer for life

Hi Omar - Thanks for the comment, really appreciate the props on the PB-2000 and our customer service. As far as the gloss, it's a process that involves hand-applying multiple layers of premium gloss over the course of multiple days so its adds material costs and manufacturing time. We'd love to keep them the same price as the wood grain finishes but it's not feasible given the time and effort that goes into working with high end gloss. -Nick

I agree with most of what you said, with the exception that speakers that bounce weaken your overall surround sound speaker system. I have an historic home and wasn't comfortable sawing holes in an plaster ceiling. I picked up Martin Logan's Height speaker. After audyssey set up I was a tad disappointed, that is, until I manually dialed my front and rear height effect speakers to a level that was much higher than what the Audyssey called for. My Atmos and especially DTS X content sounds amazing with those Martin Logans. Now, Had SVS introduced this speaker about a year ago, I'd be using two pair of them right now because I happen to think they're really a great idea and are a great value to any consumer at any budget. Great job guys and we appreciate it. when the day comes to look at new or more speakers to add to our home cinema, our first stop will be SVS,

Thanks for sharing your experience, the ceiling bounce can work in certain situations, we just found it to be unpredictable, but good to know you got it dialed in. With the Prime Elevation, we wanted to design a height effects speaker with versatile placement options that sounded great installed anywhere to avoid the unpredictability.

IMO these SVS speakers would be a lot uglier in any main floor home application compared to in-ceiling speakers. Despite what SVS says, the ideal home atmos setup is in-ceiling for the height channels. I'm sure these are great sounding speakers for surround channels, but there are many good choices for on-wall and freestanding that don't have the unnecessary and distracting slant. For example, the two Emotiva surround speaker types solve real world problems (depth of unit and tweeter too close to listing position) that these SVS units don't address.

The ceiling bounce had no effect for me. I heard the sound coming out of the 140SA DA module topper and returned them. Nothing elevated just sound coming out of a speaker on top of my speaker, very localized. Really Bad experience.

But these look and appear that they will take sound and dolby atmos to a whole different level. I have an Onkyo mid level Dolby atmos, dual base subwoofers, 7 channel system. I can't wait to use these for dolby atmos. Again thanks for the break down of this superb looking speaker system.

This is a game changing concept and I know the PE speakers have been getting a lot of buzz. My only bone of contention is that there are some high performance in ceiling speakers available. All due respect to Gary who kind of brushed them off. I started with an open room and was able to build sealed boxes to insert my ceiling speakers into which did help. I was lucky. In a room with finished ceilings in place, running wire and placing boxes would be quite a task. If I were in that situation, the PE would be at the top of my list.

Hi! What's the recommended height for these speakers? The diagram shows they flank the listening area. Also, what angle is the front baffle?
@SVS_Sound
@SVS_Sound 7 жыл бұрын
The recommended height is 6-8 feet and output levels can be adjusted if you need to go higher or lower. The front baffle angle is 70 degrees which takes into account typical listening environments and directionality for surround and height channels in the applications we are suggesting.

I have beams that run across my ceiling. I was planning on mounting them there. They would be about 6 ft in front of the listening area and up about 12 ft - 14 ft high. Would these elevation speakers work?
@SVS_Sound

Yes. At that height, you may want to raise the output levels a bit if your room correction doesn't set it high enough for your liking, but that location will work quite well.

I agree with you and thought about that. Even some in ceiling speakers have an option to purchase a separate enclosure and you have to bother with buying one for each of them and installing, further adding to the cost. A speaker already made with a perfect enclosure tuned and tweaked by manufacturer imo is the best. Waiting a little bit to pick up the white ones, just hope they will timbre match with m Klipsch RP speakers

Let me first congratulate SVS on the success of this design. And now, since its being a while, maybe there is the necessary data for a low profile design. See, where my hometheater is, I only have one side wall close to the system. The other wall is too far for adequate sound, so I need to mount on the ceiling and I observe the Primes to be a bit large. So, for this situation, a closer to the roof design would be aesthetically better. Please consider this option and let us know.

For an Atmos/height channel application, would it be best to have them on side walls pointing toward the listening position or have them centered on the ceiling above? I have a bare stud room that I am creating a home theater in, so, I have the freedom to do whatever is best. Side thought... do you lose fidelity by breaking up the speaker cable by connecting one end to a speaker wire plate and then wire from that to the receiver? Or should I run one direct wire from the speaker to my receiver?
@SVS_Sound
@SVS_Sound 6 жыл бұрын
Either of the Dolby Atmos configurations would be solid, but we generally defer to Dolby in cases like this (www.dolby.com/us/en/guide/dolby-atmos-speaker-setup/index.html), then pick the system layout and select overhead speakers. A lot of it comes down to your overall room shape and dimensions, but if you have the option, the overhead application generally performs better. We recommend running a wire directly the receiver if possible.

If mounting on a side wall for Atmos, should the speaker be aimed directly at the person seated? Or slightly in front of the seated person and aimed down. How many feet should the speaker be above the side surrounds?
@SVS_Sound
@SVS_Sound 7 жыл бұрын
If mounting on a side wall, the speaker should be mounted between 6-9 feet off the ground with the front baffle angled down and aligned with or slightly in front of the primary listening position. Generally, the speakers are mounted close to where the wall meets the ceiling. You can always adjust the levels if you're looking to add more dynamic impact. The Prime Elevation also throw a wide soundstage so you have some flexibility with placement based on what works best for your room.

Prime Elevation is very close to a full-range bookshelf speaker, so even with nearfield listening, they will provide a very neutral listening experience with excellent clarity and dynamics and all the qualities of a great sounding loudspeaker. Would definitely benefit from pairing with a subwoofer if using purely for 2-channel listening.

I'm planning on getting these to add to my 5.1 setup. The only place I can place them would be front height Above the tv 6-8 ft high pointed downward towards the listener. Would this work for dolby atmos? Or do they have to put on the sides? Also would placing these as front heights be better than using upfiring klipsch modules on top of my front towers?
@SVS_Sound
@SVS_Sound 6 жыл бұрын
Prime Elevation speakers can absolutely be used on the front stage in a downward firing array. It would still deliver a more immersive audio experience because the output is much more predictable without relying on the bounce effect and they have broader frequency response (deeper bass & cleaner highs).

You always want the front baffle angled towards the listening area. If Mounted directly overhead, you'd position the Elevations just off to the left and right of the main listening position, at least 8 feet apart, but it could even be more depending on the size of the room.

These sound extremely tempting...Biggest headache for me, and going by the comments here, it seems many other people, is wondering where to put these for best results...Then there's the added problem of fitting and tidying up the cables...Some of my cable will need to be tucked under carpets, then run across and up the walls, so will need to hide a fair bit of cable. My easiest option would be to place these at the front corners, up high on floating corner shelves...so in the corners of a 15ft wide room...Presently my front L/R & Center Speakers are in the middle of this space...5ft apart, at ear level...Would the corners be a good option, or would the SVS's be best placed high underneath the ceiling and in line with the front L/R's ..? I've read a lot about these speakers but found no information whether these are suitable on shelves...Would corner shelves work..?
@SVS_Sound
@SVS_Sound 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, corner shelves would work. We also recommend high on the side walls, slightly forward of the main listening position, or directly on the ceiling, angling downward. You can email a few pics of your room to custservice@svsound.com and our team will give recommendation based on your specific setup.

if using these as front heights high on the wall are they supposed to be placed evenly above the front left and right towers or closer together so that they are pointed more towards the listener? My towers are pointed in angle towards the listener and since the mounts of the prime elevation points them straight forward the only way for them to be pointed directly to the listener would be if they were just a couple feet apart from each other above the tv (in between the towers)
@SVS_Sound
@SVS_Sound 6 жыл бұрын
The Prime Elevations have excellent dispersion characteristics so you have some flexibility with placement, but if using on the front stage, we recommend mounting them even with the main L/R speakers. If there is 8 or more feet in between the front speakers, that's when you would want the Elevations a bit closer together.

SVS I have the sats in all positions in a 5.2.2, the .2 being 2 pb1000’s. Love them, sound fantastic. I have the LCR behind an acoustic screen. I needed to trim under 200hz as I was getting to much of a boundary boast being so close to the front wall and corners. Few hours of measuring in REW got them dialed in. Want to upgrade the fronts to bigger Bookshelfes or ultras but worried I will get even more boost in those positions. Would love it if you made a 6inch forward facing speaker designed for close wall placement, basically like the elevation but with no angle. Would assume this would be a big seller as most people don’t have the space to pull LCR right into the room, and no one makes a speaker specifically for wall mounting with no compromise.Can I plug the ports on all of your speaker range without damaging them to help with this?

The PS5 doesn't support Dolby Atmos. Sony went with what they call Tempest.

Just sold my second born for these and now trying to figure out how the hell I'm supposed to mount them on the wall near the ceiling? Brackets totally in the way when installed with banana plugs (which I spent an arm and a leg for a good cable set)! I wouldn't know how these speakers sound because I can't hook them the bloody hell up!

There's a couple different options for mounting, please email our support team at custservice@svsound.com and they can help with installation based on your specific set-up.

@@SVS_Sound Thanks for your help. I picked up some spade ends and replaced the banana clips at the speaker ends and all is well now.

This might be a stupid question but here it goes. Whats the difference between this angled design speaker and a regular shaped speaker thats tilted downwards to the same angle using a wall bracket.... is it just that one speaker is flush against the wall and the other is hanging off a bracket

Ultimately the speaker's output capabilities are the biggest difference. The Prime Elevation is essentially a full-range bookshelf speaker that can easily mounts to a wall or ceiling whereas most speakers mounted on a wall-bracket are compact satellites that lack the dynamic output to be truly effective. That said, you are right about the mounting and it just depends on what speaker you're comparing. Either option would be better than the ceiling bounce Atmos approach.

All your diagrams show these mounted high on a wall. How would they perform if mounted on a ceiling with the angle to the listening position?

Hi Jeff - The mounting bracket allows for the Prime Elevation to be mounted overhead, directly to the ceiling, so they would perform as well, and in some cases better depending on your room's layout and dimensions.

Okay, neither Dolby or DTS came up with height effects. Pioneer and Yamaha did in the late 80s and early 90s. It didn't fly off because people were more interested about 2 channel stereo than anything else.

Dolby Atmos uses 3D audio objects that are pannable in three-axis coordinates using rendering metadata to create immersive sound, which is different than what you're talking about. They are discrete sound elements, not matrix derived. Cinema Atmos is 62.2 and the fully functional home version is 34.1.

Why didn't svs make these speakers wireless? I mean you've made wireless subwoofers why not these. One must drill holes through wall for fish cables and you're saying "they're simple to install "?Ridiculous

With the bracket, there is space to run speaker wire behind the Elevation. Many people prefer to go through the wall to avoid wires running around the room, but if that's not possible, we recommend cable raceways that can be painted to match decor.

I can see where 7 of these speakers would make a wonderful matching surround speaker setup. Too pricey for my tastes though. Also, Klipsch makes a speaker almost ifentical yo this speaker. So, it's not a unique option. By the way, Klipsch is also mui' expensive. ~ peace
