I made a short attempt at speaking in some different Swedish dialects. How did I do? Please leave a like and a comment!

when I was learning Swedish I did so through distance learning and also went to uni in Lund for a bit. I could understand everything on tv and could have small conversations with people. but I made some friends from GBG and when I went up there I could NOT understand ANYTHING anyone said lmao. To me it sounded like they would blend then stretch sounds and I couldn't make sense of any of it

That Gotland dialect(?) reminds me of that video of a guy who spoke in a Scottish accent: "steel is heavier than feathers" 😂😂

I had to subscribe. I can't really tell the differences between dialects yet, but just hearing different ways you can say the same word(s) was pretty cool. I was just told today that my beginner Swedish in my video is more understandable than skånska. I guess that's good.

Hi Dustin, and thanks! Went over to your channel and I must say I was really impressed! Keep up the good work. It's always fun to see people interested in learning Swedish :)

Too bad, skånskan is the most articulate and beautiful one as long as it's not exaggerated

I wish I had a practical reason to learn Swedish. I'll do it just enough because I have so many ancestors from there. It's a pretty language.

I need some advice my best friend lives in GothenBurge sweden, so she speaks göteborgska dialekt, and I’ve been learning Swedish some things I’ve learned r pronounced differently where she’s from. The advice I need is do I just learn Swedish or how do I learn a specific dialect... does it matter

Cool! I'm a Canadian learning Swedish who visits Sweden often (Stockholm/Lund) and it's very interesting to hear the differences in speech. I've noticed that most Swedish women pronounce certain words or letters differently. For example "fyra", it sounds like the Y is coming from the back of their throat, but I don't hear men pronounce it this way? Great channel!
@Nackagubben9 жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks :) It sounds like you experienced the regional difference (rather than gender difference) between how letters and words are pronounced. The accent in the south (like Lund) generally pronounces vowels longer and further back compared to Stockholm. It should also be noted that there is a special dialect apparent only in Lund. This is due to the fact that Lund with its universities has brought people from all over the country. This has in turn formed a new dialect which in turn sounds like a mixture between southern and central Swedish! :)

It's hard for me to appreciate the differences but I'm interested in finding out how the örebro accent is compared to the rest of Sweden. Is it somehow quite extreme and noticeable to other swedes, or is it a "middle of the road" average accent? Tackar!
@Nackagubben8 жыл бұрын
+MrCurry Hai :3 The Örebro-accent isn't that extreme I'd say. Actually, in most cases, people that live in central Örebro do not have that strong of an accent at all. It can be better distinguished when visiting regions outside and close to Örebro. But even then I would not say it is an "extreme" or typically noticeable accent (at least for us in Stockholm) :)

I guess you were spot on with the Orebro dialect and maybe the Gothenburg one. You could have included Skånska and the Dalarna dialects. Btw do ppl in the southern and western parts of Sweden say "hallå" more than "Hej" ?
@Nackagubben9 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Actually, the Örebro dialect was originally intented to be Dalmål, but it turned out to be something else. And the hej/hallå-thing was something that just spontaniously happened :D
@yousufahmed95219 жыл бұрын
Nackagubben I wouldn't be surprised that it was intended to be Dalmål, they do sound similar, along with the Berslagen dialect of Vastmanland they both put emphasis on the first part of the syllable. Btw is it a Dalarna/Bergslagen thing to pronounce the "L" as an "R", or is it more of a general rural thing ?
@Nackagubben9 жыл бұрын
Yousuf Ahmed I have both family and friends from both regions, but I have never heard anyone pronouce "L" as "R". It would be interesting where you've heard it because I'm not familiar with it myself! :)
@yousufahmed95219 жыл бұрын
Nackagubben Maybe not a straight "R" but the "L" does sound a bit funny in some rural Central Swedish dialects. It sounds something between "L" and "R" and I haven't heard it in any other Swedish dialect. As in the word "Dalarna" or even "Falun", it sounds like "Dalrlna" and "Farlrn" to me. Though most of the people I heard it from have been over 65 years old.

Shouldn't stockholmska be the most understandable for foreigner?
@Nackagubben7 жыл бұрын
+Anton Suni I suppose so! I cannot speak for anyone who've tried to learn Swedish, but I believe that we generally pronounce words as they are spellee. There are of course exceptions :)
@MrAntsunator7 жыл бұрын
It seems as a Finn, written 'g' often is pronounced as 'j' and 'ä' as 'e' in Swedish. Ofc there is exceptions as you said. Would be awesome if I learnt all nordics languages one day. My plan is to learn Norwegian after Swedish and Icelandic or Danish. Perhaps I'll leave Danish the last if you know what I mean.
@Nackagubben7 жыл бұрын
Yes, G is mostly pronounced as 'J' (except for words like gå). But 'Ä' is actually pronounced as 'Ä' in many dialects, it's in dialects like mine (Stockholm) where we tend to pronounce it as 'E' :) I would like to do a video about these characters sometime! And I completely understand what you mean about Danish :P I might attempt it, but it is really difficult to get right.
@pumpkin24777 жыл бұрын
Anton Suni not really, stockholmska sounds very different from "riks svenska" (the basic form of swedish that they speak on the news etc) isnt really spoken anywhere
@Peter_19866 жыл бұрын
Yes, the Stockholm accent is probably one of the easiest accents for foreigners. Just keep in mind that a Stockholm accent does have a characteristic melody, so it isn't exactly "neutral", although it works in a way that is fairly ideal for learners of standard Swedish (it uses rolling R-sounds and "flat" vowels without glides, for example, which is typical for a lot of Swedish accents). If you want some examples of the Stockholm accent, then try listening to how celebrities like Mikael Persbrandt or Paolo Roberto speak. (Paolo Roberto has Italian origin, of course, but he is born and raised in Stockholm and definitely has a Stockholm accent).

@Nackagubben8 жыл бұрын
Good question! Need to practise that!
@Peter_19866 жыл бұрын
+Vardy Army Pretty sure that the point of this video was to demonstrate accents that _originate_ from Sweden. Arabic accents obviously don't have Swedish origin by definition, regardless of what some people like to pretend - that would be like trying to make an American accent with a Swedish accent, and that makes no sense.
@sabuomarrr16 жыл бұрын
Laurelindo Hes just an idiot. There is no official arabic swedish dialect. Obviously anyone that isnt a native swedish speaker is gonna sound a little different. Wether that person is a south American, Slav, german or an arab doesnt matter.
