I just saw it last night and this cast is Phenomenal. Everyone sounded wonderful and weren't afraid to lean into the dissonance as the music called for it. They handled the interruption of a nearby fireworks display admirably and with good humor. The conductor and orchestra were also amazing and worked well with the cast. I am so glad I got to see this.

100% agreed. I actually thought for a minute that the fireworks were planned... It was like his rage was all around me then he seemed to capture the mayhem in his body and roar it out in the song! Goosebumps!!! Such talent and professionalism, all the way around.

I am afraid the attempts at a British accent were not good. Seeing the show is full of Americanisms, why do American productions even attempt a British accents

I can’t wait to see this tomorrow!!! The cast looks wonderful! I’ve seen Carmen before in Wicked and know she’s fantastic, but I’m really excited to hear Ben Davis’ performance based on this clip. I saw the show once at the Fox, and it was very good, but the production has historically become very minimalist. To see it on the Muny stage with a full orchestra playing Sondheim’s best score is going to be something really special.

Can't wait to see this on Friday night, July 22. Muny regular Ben Davis can always be counted on to a great job with his roles, especially one where the singing demands are great. I am excited by the casting of Carmen Cusack as Mrs. Lovett. I have been a fan of hers since seeing her play Elphaba in the road company of "Wicked" years ago. I saw and loved the orignal Broadway production of Sweeny Todd 43 years ago and am glad that the Muny is at last producing this Sondheim masterpiece. I am hopeful that the Muny is putting on a production this week that is worthy of a classic that has taken so long to make its Muny debut.

What a great show last night! A little trouble during "Epiphany" with the fireworks display nearby. I could tell that Mrs Lovett made a comment about it, but couldn't tell exactly what she said.

I knew the story but listening to comments after the show you realize so many were confused. I couldn't help but think a synopsis in the program could have helped a lot of people.
@joshuakohlmann9731
@joshuakohlmann9731 2 жыл бұрын
Very often they don't give a synopsis because it would take a lot of the suspense out of the evening. ST is full of surprises, plus moments where you think "what?" only to be rewarded with an explanation later. A good example is "Worst Pies In London". Why, you wonder, does Mrs Lovett spend three minutes singing about how bad her pies are, and how difficult it is to get meat? And then, by the end of Act 1, the relevance becomes clear. I think the essence of ST is suspense and surprise, hence the lack of exposition in most theatre programmes - it would spoil the fun!

at intermission right now mon july 18. listening to all too typical st louis audience members walk out in a huff. can pretty much guarantee that half the audience in st louis will hate it, despite the fact that the production is excellent on every level. the muny is to be commended for taking this on for the longest time, the only sondheim show to get a hearing at the muny was "a funny thing..." (with the one-off exception of the original production of "follies" in july 1972 which played for a week in st louis when the show was transitioning to an extended run in los angeles). a fitting tribute to the genius of sondheim in this year following his death

Missouri audiences are usually very rude
@canamus1768
@canamus1768 2 жыл бұрын
@@y68on42 can't vouch for all of missouri, but stl audiences can be very rude. the muny audience is multigenerational (i.e., families have held the same seats literally for decades) and generally conservative. if it isn't r&h (nothing against the masters) or one of the newer corporate monstrosities like "mamma mia," forget it. i know that a theater has to pay the light bill, and a house with 12,000 seats can be a hard sell for a show like "sweeney," but the lowest common denominator approach to programming can be very disheartening.
@jimspies2775
@jimspies2775 2 жыл бұрын
Almost positive I saw "Into The Woods" at the Muny? Also "West Side Story", but not sure we really count that as a "Sondheim show", he just wrote the lyrics. But, don't disagree with your assessment of the audience. I am contatntly amazed at how many people leave before curtain call is done.
@canamus1768
@canamus1768 2 жыл бұрын
@@jimspies2775 you are correct; i did overlook "into the woods,"which was done in 2015. and you could also throw "gypsy" into the mix by the same criterion as "west side story," if counting sondheim's work as lyricist.

How refreshing to hear an American cast sing this very best of musicals with convincing English accents. Len Cariou and George Hearn were embarrassing.
@kennethwayne6857
@kennethwayne6857 Жыл бұрын
I'd hardly call the performances of those two gents embarrassing. It's just that they made no attempt at an English accent (perhaps they didn't feel the need to) and evidently Hal Prince was cool with that. Johnny Depp's accent was good but I'd take their singing over his any day.
