This video is my studio cover of "Sweet Jane", written by Lou Reed, back in the "Glam Rock" days of the early 1970's. This one and only unique version of this song was debuted on his 1974 release of Lou’s, Rock and Roll Animal, album. If you were a guitar player back in those days everyone was into their personal guitar gods like Hendrix, Clapton, Jeff Beck, and a handful of others. However, two guitar players that went practically unnoticed during this time period were Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner. These two classic rock guitarists recorded dueling guitar solos on this live version of “Sweet Jane” , that blew us away back in the mid 70’s. This video is a tribute to those two classic rock guitar players.
A very special thanks to Brad Shell, on drums, and Bob Oyler, on the bass guitar, both of whom performed on this studio recording of mine. Fantastic job guys!
As for the rest of the music lovers out there, I hope you enjoy it. If so, please subscribe by clicking on the Subscribe button for my channel. When you do, you will be notified right away of any new videos I release.

Yes, I agree, Kevin. I have been in love with those harmony solos in the intro and the alternating counterpoise of their individual solos for 50 years now. It was a masterpiece, and a hidden gem, of classic rock and roll music from the 1970's.

Until today I didn’t know about Dick Wagner; had only known about Hunter’s work on the tour/LP for Rock & Roll Animal. Phenomenal guitarist! And let’s not forget Prakesh John’s bass playing!! He was bassist/singer for a band called, Bush. Saw them as an opening act for some band in the early 70s. Can’t remember - having slept a time or two since then.

Being over 70 myself, I can completely relate to this brilliant song featuring THE best guitar intro I've ever heard. Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner were beyond brilliant. I wore two vinyl copies of "Rock'n'Roll Animal" out . . mainly listening to this masterpiece. I still listen to this song regularly. Your own guitar work is fabulous. Great touch. However, there is one element of this brilliant intro that should be recognized. The BASS lines provided by PRAKESH JOHN. Prakesh is Canadian and not overly well known but it's impossible to listen to this intro without hearing his searing bass rims. some of rock music's finest. Distinctive. Clean and clear. How I envy those who were at that little NYC theater on that Dec '73 night. They witnessed an extraordinary event. Steve, Dick and Prakesh were so good that Lou Reed felt upstaged and he was . He dumped that band because he knew they would outshine him. You've honored this song well with exceptional guitar skills of your own. it must have been a lot of fun to recreate.
@KennysClassics
@KennysClassics 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you kiltedwolf2! I am honored by your comments, and I agree with everything you stated about the song and the album. Yes, you are right, Prakesh, deserves a round of applause as well. He was the bass player with the dark bushy mustache as seen in several videos of the band at that time. But, yes, it was fun to recreate this tune into a storytelling video, with the music as close to the original as I could make it. It was a lot of work, but well worth the time, especially for fans like you and I who can appreciate their work.
@kiltedwolf2
@kiltedwolf2 2 жыл бұрын
@@KennysClassics Yeah, Kenny. Prakesh John did sorta resemble Jim Croce with that dark moustache. .only with a ton more talent. ha For me, it's just hard to NOT to recognize Prakesh's brilliant bass work in the intro to Sweet Jane. He's right there with Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner. I really wish that band had been able to stay together longer. They needed a good lead singer. Lou Reed wasn't going to share the stage with more talented musicians, so he canned them. Alice Cooper picked them up for a while but he too had a massive ego. Every time I listen to this song, which is often, I dissect the parts of every musician playing on this incredible musical icon. You have a gift. You seem to FEEL what you want to create via your fingers on a guitar fret board. Carlos Santana said this years back. I'm thinking you'll concur. To be able to transfer thoughts into music as well as you can craft them is art. I admire your talents immensely. Rock on. --Michael Wolf

I'm 65 years young now, Sweet Jane and Rock And Roll are two my all time favorites. My third favorite guitar rock song is Train Kept a Rolling, which is so good everyone on the planet thinks Aerosmith invented it, even Jeff Beck couldn't believe it when he heard fans calling it an Aerosmith Song. I've been listing to these 3 songs since the 70's And didn't know until 5 years ago Hunter & Wagner did all three. I'm one of their biggest fans now, and I was very disappointed with Rolling Stone Magazine's list of 100 greatest guitarist, as these two were not mentioned but Lou Reed made the list.

Doug, I get it! I am 68 years young, and I agree with your comments. The fact that these two guitar soloists have been pretty much ignored in the classic rock media, is one of the main reasons I did this video, which was to give them the kudos they deserved. The second reason I did this video was, like you, I loved these dueling solos and feel that it was one of the greatest performances in classic rock history. Like one of the commentators on my KZbin channel said, "This was a true Rock and Roll anthem if there ever was one...one of the best live recordings and solos ever..." Regarding Lou Reed, the only thing we can really credit him and his manager for is getting this gig originally which made this live recording possible...Thanks for your thoughts Doug, and stop back often for more videos, and subscribe to my channel! 😎

Thanks Dwight, I can relate. This song always reminded me of cruisin' in my 1969 Chevy Impala, on some warm Ohio nights, listening to this tune over and over again, with a little Bowie and some Stones thrown in between....lol.

your homage to one of the greatest intros in rock history has got to be among the best, if not THE best covers out there. so beautifully crafted. if i played guitar i'd be insanely jealous. bravo to you, kenny, bob and brad. thanks for keeping this little piece of the magnificent music and times of the 70's alive.

My man, you tore that up!! Well, well done, and thanks for taking the time to do a tribute to those two guys. I was in the 3rd grade on Dec 21, 1973 as my mom and her boyfriend relocated us in a VW van up I-5 to Albany, Oregon. My mom had the coolest music, including the Bad Company album with "Ready for Love" which made me rock the house at 9, and of course Rock N' Roll Animal which I continue to learn more and more about to this day. As I entered the USAF in 1984 I started purchasing my own music and Rock N' Roll Animal immediately entered the collection. I don't have to tell YOU, that whole album is great. Thanks again, you nailed it. Respectfully, JD

Thank you for your comments. Yes, this song really got me going back in the 70's. When I wanted a boost, I would pop in my 8-track of Lou's, Rock and Roll Animal album, which included this tune, into my old Chevy Impala, and I would crank it up as loud as that car stereo would go at the time...It was fantastic to listen to in then and still is today... The 8-track's car stereo speakers just couldn't handle it back then, so I hooked up a 100 watt, (2) 12" guitar speaker cabinet in the back seat to the existing car stereo speaker wires. That did the trick! It was glorious...lol...

Nice job. Maybe still my favorite guitar solo-duet. If it weren't for the lousy singer, I could have been a big Lou Reed fan. Ha! Only years later did I learn it wasn't Lou playing the guitar, but Hunter and Wagner. Wish I had paid attention sooner, would have tried to catch them.
