How do you know which end is which? That is something I can’t always tell.

I found that it depends on the fleece. On a colored fleece the tips will be bleached by the sun and the cut (butt end) will be darker. Likewise with a white fleece the tips will sometimes be a little yellow or more weathered, it also tends to be more feathery, while the cut end is very blunt. But that is in my very limited experience with only two kinds of sheep. Scottish Blackface and Portuguese merino.
