Having knobs and faders is the best. This is affordable and fantastic. I'm so tired of computer recording . The workflow is SOOO much better when you can just reach out and grab a knob quickly and push a button at the same time It's way more fun and intuitive. This thing is beautiful too. I loved my old Tascam Cassette Portastudio. It would be better with motorized faders and knobs that link with protools but that would make it a lot more money.

Much appreciate the demo - we just purchased 3 of these to use in our production and recording classes and your demo helped find the answer to questions about the console about operating/button functions which are unique to this console. FYI - model 24 is extremely picky about SD cards regardless whether the card meets the required specifications as stated (SD (512MB to 2GB), SDHC (4GB to 32GB), SDXC (64GB to 512GB), Class 10 or higher required). It gave the message "recording failed" while overdubbing/adding 1 track after we had recorded 30 seconds on track 1. Formatting the 128gb sd card took approx. 15 min so be sure to do all your formatting ahead of time. Thank you for producing a clear and concise brief instructional video.

Thats is a great idea, we should reach out to Tascam about that! Daw control and motorized faders would be the way to go, it would blow any other mixer away after that. I see how this is a good live recording mixer, but in the studio I would like the option of using a high quality interface with multiple pres, for example an apollo 8 or at least a clarett. Daw control would give me a reason to use this mixer in the studio. I would also love to see a metering bridge on the upgrade. I wouldn't mind paying double the price for something like that.

A 22 separate input USB audio interface for your DAW, 100 mm faders, nice outboard EQ, included digital effects, and good-sounding mic pres. So, after having this unit for a week now, I've come to like it while accepting its limitations. After a slight learning curve and a few hiccups getting it all set up correctly, for what I do at home it is almost perfect. Once you understand the Mode setting it makes life easy. The Model 24 does double duty as you are able to record bands to the included SD card, then transfer the tracks to you DAW for editing. There are in essence no editing capabilities included. There's not much you can do onboard in this area. Best scenario for recording bands would be to also bring your laptop. Moving faders would have been great. Being able to have DAW transport controls would have been a nice touch. You’d think they could fix this in a software update to carry the controls over the USB cable somehow. Having some dedicated returns for the sends would have been nice. As it is you must use one or more of the 22 input channels to get your returns. Adding these features would have of course added to the cost, but I'd pay a little more for those functions. The included Bluetooth capability is a no-brainer in the smartphone era and is much appreciated. Phantom power is included but not for individual channels. It's either on for all or off. I would have paid a little more for the convenience of phantom power on at least 4 of the channels. 8 would be ideal. Think of the Model 24 as a USB 2.0 audio interface for a DAW with the addition of: 100 mm faders, a somewhat patchbay, Bluetooth, 16 XLR inputs, & 20 1/4" inputs. The unit makes it easy to get everything hooked up and your levels set, while your DAW does the heavy lifting. In that regard it does a lot right. It's nice and convenient to have my gear and instruments hooked up to the Model 24, as routing inputs in the DAW is very easy. So, let's say Tascam decided to make a version 2 of this unit with everything on my wishlist included/fixed, and let's say the street price was $1,500.00. It would be worth every penny.
@Arperture4 жыл бұрын
Idk, I think I prefer using channels for return, as you can EQ the effected signal and control it's level with a fader.
@checkpointcovid80214 жыл бұрын
@@Arperture Pros and cons of both. For me, it would have been better to have dedicated Aux Returns. That way, you don't lose two channels if you needed them. I don't of course since it's just me at home, but it's just a wish list item. After a few emails to Tascam and a message board I've got the Model 24 all hooked up and all my gear patched in. I'm good to go. What would have been nice is if the manual would have been worth a shit. They could have done a better job explaining things.

Thanks for this reveiew...great example of how to use this amazing mixer! One question, in the mixdown process, when assigning each track in protools to a separate output and then feeding back in to the model 24... how is the audio sent back to the model 24, via the usb cable? At this point, are you bouncing down everything on to tracks 21 & 22? many thanks :)
@sweetwater4 жыл бұрын
Hello, Christian! Jose from Sweetwater, here. Great question! Each channel on the Model 24 has a switch that will allow you to change the input signal from the analog mic/line inputs to the PC via the USB cable. This allows for you to take tracks from any compatible DAW and run them through the board for mix down. I'd love to speak with you more on the details, so feel free to give me a shout at my contact information below. Thanks for the interest! @@sweetwater Hello Jose! Thanks a lot for your reply, it clarified my question! :) So once the Model 24 is receiving the audio back from the separate tracks in the DAW via the usb cable, one can use the desks EQ, compression and add internal or external effects and then bounce down to track 21 & 22 I assume? Or we'd bounce down back in the DAW? I assume one could use the plug-ins within the DAW and program an automix before sending the audio out from DAW to the model 24... if thats the case then thats pretty powerful! Many thanks! I live in the Canary Island,Spain, so will be ordering one over here, probably from Thomann in Germany!

It does look like quite the versatile mixer. I've been considering a hardware mixer for recording and this looks like a serious consideration. Prog rock version of "Billie Jean"? I'd have guessed fusion. That's what it sounded like to me on first blush but then I'm a bit green on both fusion and prog as I'm more a straight ahead rock guy. I also love Michael Jackson's music and really, really dug this arrangement of this song. I liked the conversation that the keyboards and bass were having with the rest of the band. A ton of melodic content. Nicely done! I'd like to hear more of Billie Beru.

That's a good sounding demo. Did you use the pre-amps on the mixer or outboard gear ? Just asking because the drums need something like at least a half-dozen inputs for the mics, which means they need compression. I'm skeptical that the one knob compressor on a $999 mixer is any good. I'd imagine anything past 9:00 or 10:00 on the compression knob would create artifacts and unacceptable "pumping" and "breathing." Not to mention the fact that you have no control over threshold, ratio, attack and release. Even a Boss CS-3 has Level, Attack and Compression controls. Tascam should have excluded the one knob compressors and put inserts on the first 12 channels instead. This makes more sense because inserting even a "budget" model compressor like a FMR RNC1773, RNLA7239, ART PRO VLA or similar outboard compressor would do better. Someone may mention this, but you don’t get great results patching a compressor / limiter through the AUX send / return. AUXs are for reverbs / delays, etc. Unless you’re a one man band and record one instrument at a time, having only two insert points is extremely limiting the potential of this mixer. I’d be willing to pay a little more even if only for inserts on the first 8 channels. I hope someone from Tascam reads this and takes this into consideration when re-designing their MKII version ( I’m sure there will be one, I imagine, from what I’ve been reading. A lot of people have good things to say about the feature set and design . ) Don’t get me wrong, I like the format and most of the features as well, and would love to buy one, especially for this price. Any comments from the gentlemen at Sweetwater about the compressor ( or the mixer in general ) would be appreciated as well.
@pseudomonasaeruginosa41986 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply, that was very helpful to me ! Knowing the compressor is useful when used sparingly, and that the internal effects and the mixer EQ are all of good enough quality is helpful in making a decision about whether or not to buy this unit. Again, the demo song has very good quality sound. If you don't mind me asking, if you have further contact with a Tascam representative, could you please ask about including inserts on the mono channels. I don't think that would add greatly to the expense and I don't think people would mind paying a little extra if they know they can still use their outboard hardware. Everyone has their favorite compressor / limiter, EQ and such. Thanks again !
@DrFlowMusic5 жыл бұрын
@Mitch Gallagher Thanks Mitch for your review! A question, do you know if the EQ/compressor is recorded on the SDcard/audio interface and are there any routing options for it? I work with a lot of synthesizers so if the EQ/comp doesn't print on the recordings this console doesn't seem usefull for my purposes. But I can't find any specific info on the routing/signal flow. Any chance Tascam can make an updated "MKII" version with inserts on at least 8 of the mono channels ? I just don't know how effective a one knob compressor can be, especially at this price point. I'd prefer inserts so I can use my hardware compressors and equalizers, etc. Actually, I wouldn't mind paying more for inserts on all 12 mono channels as well as parametric ( or at least semi-parametric) "low-mid" and "high-mid" bands. I like the 100mm long throw faders and the built in 24-in/22-out interface, though. Nice layout and design overall. Hope to buy one when they become available.

How does the Model 24 handle phantom power inputs? Can you dedicate an input(s) for phantom power?
@sweetwater4 жыл бұрын
Hello! The phantom power power turns it on/off for all mic inputs simultaneously. There is unfortunately no way to turn it on for specific inputs only. Thanks for the interest! Kevin Spunde, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1732, Kevin_Spunde@Sweetwater.com

Mitch makes this look so easy. I'm having trouble routing my session from Pro Tools to the Tascam Model 24. The outputs are taking 2 channels on my board (example pro tools track 1 output will go into tracks 1 and 2) and I can only send 2 channels into my board. I'm having trouble sending one track one by one to individual channels on the board. I'm using pro tools first so that may be the reason for limitations but I'm seriously stuck.
@morbidmanmusic3 жыл бұрын
It won't do that
@AntmanFelix3 жыл бұрын
@@morbidmanmusic i figured this out on my own. Regular version of Pro Tools will allow me to send my tracks to whatever channel on the board I set. Also able to do this with reaper as well.

Apparantly any eq'ing done on the mixing console does not translate/record over onto the DAW. Has this changed in a firmware update?

Will there ever be a firmware update that will allow, at least, the main mix to be record out to the SD card (or through USB DAW) at something greater than 48kHz, 24-bit?
@alexsander5604 жыл бұрын
No ... never! If you are a producer that really needs the dynamic of a 96khz Record.. then you are sooo professional (famous) that you can spend 3x times the money for this unit and look for a real Pro Equipment. But this right here, its for little bands and acts or home producer. And trust me, the headroom of a 48khz (above CD Quality) Mixer is more you need when you dont get 4000$ back from your job p/M. A good record doesnt depend on 96khz or 48khz... and also the good old WAV is still just right.

@sweetwater I'm really looking into buying this, mainly to use as an analog mixer. At 6:35, he mentions that he is routing the audio back into the Model 24. How do you do this? Thanks!
@sweetwater4 жыл бұрын
Hey, Moksh. Thank you so much for reaching out and checking us out online. The Model 24 has a very flexible routing system for a hybrid analog/digital board. To route the audio back into the board from the computer or the drive, you just flip the mode switch below the preamp to the proper input source. You can select each source individually. Hope this answers your question. If I can help with anything else or give more detail for you, just give me a call. Thanks for the demo! I am considering buying a Model 24 and I have a question. When we have finished recording all the different instruments live or separately, how do we proceed to make the final stereo mix? I specify I don't use a DAW. I read the user's manual (I'm french) and I don't get it. Thank you in advance.
@sweetwater2 жыл бұрын
Hey, Tagada! Once everything is recorded, you have to select and send all of your tracks to the main. From there, the Model 24 should record your stereo mix onto the SD card. I’ve copied a link to a video that goes into further detail here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3zSlYxojbxrqas Hope this helps! Nice retro-looking package there, thx; my interest’s in vintage 70s analogue Tascam gear but with the resurgence of interest in analogue, more makers may follow suit & develop mixers with as Silvia Massey does, combine the best of analogue sound & digital connectivity/edit ability. I like 2 c as well as hear what’s happening on each track/sub-group/master so I wonder if Tascam has a meter-bridge 4 this? Maybe a plug-in switchable LED array (beautiful big VUs a bit much 2 ask 4 I suppose, like on my antique MB-20. My old Model-5b has 4 honkin’ gr8 VUs for the 4 busses & 1 for the master.)
