@@AmyAmore99 the fact you're not Mormon might be part of the difference. I'm not American, and while we have some Mormons in my country, we have many other religious and cultural groups that practice similar lifestyles. Girls in particular are almost always raised to have zero agency, to be completely dependent on someone else (e.g. one of my friends refused to go with us on a trip because "we never traveled without an adult before"... We were all 20 or older). Even I, although I was not part of any of these cultural or religious groups, was told that I should get married before I live alone or go forward in my studies because "men only want women who are less mature or educated than them".

This is actually a HUGE part of why im concerned people are taking away the wrong conclusions from this show. The Mormon Church is worth Billions of dollars and is likely the largest land owner in the country. They do a LOT of harm to those who don’t feel like they can “be themselves” within the system. They fight against women’s health care, education, and LGBTQ+ rights with the money that members have to give to remain a part of the church. It HELPS the church to be seen as tolerant of these women despite their divorces or even immodesty (you ARE supposed to wear the garments etc). It makes the church appear more approachable and they have recently been allowing more “lapses” by popular Mormon influencers. Despite this, I believe the Mormon church inflicts trauma on so many people including women and queer kids. I suggest checking out Jordan and McKay on KZbin. They chose to leave the Mormon church after going on mission, getting married in the temple, etc.
@sleepysystemАй бұрын
havign listened to ex-mormons: the church may not approve but pardons things like this from influencers bc luring in younger people is one of their goals. not being viewed as cultish and harmful to women as it really is is important to the continued growth of the mormon church. on the whole so long as theyre paying their dues and making the church look non-restrictive and appealing theyre doing their job and are given privileges and leeway that most members of the faith would never receive.

Just wait until you're exposed the the shockingly likely theory that the church is the one putting up all the adsense money for their content though (Alyssa Grenfel has a great video on this). @blubbydragon5381Ай бұрын
That’s just Utah “ME FIRST!” culture. I lived in Utah for 5 years and that’s super normal behavior there. It’s mixture of there being a cultural bubble that lets people still act like high schoolers well into adulthood, and a culture that strongly encourages you to always care about yourself over others. An example: My sister worked at a dental practice for 2 years in a city called Lehi. There was one time she walked in on one of the assistants screaming at her mom on the phone because apparently the girl’s family had a yearly family reunion and didn’t ask HER permission to invite a family friend of the mom’s who was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer and was literally set to pass in 2 months. This was a woman the girl had known since she was a baby, and she didn’t have any bad blood with either. She also knew this woman was a divorced single mother who had no extended family to turn to, and that inviting her to the family reunion right before she was going to die was important emotionally. The girl just felt her family was required to bend to her will. Her actual response on the phone was “I mean yeah I know she has cancer and that it’s serious and she’s gonna die or whatever, but still! You should’ve asked ME!” It’s weird because the LDS church tries to stress caring for others, but the state it controls is so morally screwed.

I think one of the underlying issues with Dakota is that he wants so badly to be "normal." I think it is essential for him to have boundaries surrounding his sobriety, and in general… but he is also controlling and manipulative. I think a lot of it comes from him feeling that this is his chance at a "normal" family, and to be a "good person" again. Having a child out of wedlock would push him further into the "bad apple" stereotype he's running so hard from. I empathize with him, but that doesn't give him the right to bulldoze through Taylor's desires for a stable partnership. Taylor prioritizes her happiness over seeming like a "good girl" doing things "the right way." She contributes to their relationship's toxicity, but she has good reasons to be so hesitant, and I will automatically ride for any woman society tries to slutshame into an abusive marriage. Being a husband and a father will not automatically make Dakota's sobriety and religious struggles easier, and Taylor is under no obligation to take that bullet for him when she clearly has her own issues to address. I also think she is trying her hardest to push him away without outright ending things and being blamed, and it must still be scary for her to think about being on her own. She clearly cares about him, but I support her putting her safety and wellbeing before him.

@vadalia3860Ай бұрын
I'm fine with the kids not featuring a lot, it should be illegal to show kids on reality T.V.

I’m a lifelong member of the LDS church, but my family is blended (divorced, remarried parents, different religions practiced in each household, lots of non-member and ex member family). My member parents don’t have the unequal power dynamics or weirdness of some of these at all, but they also didn’t marry young. I also grew up outside of Utah, so the culture I was raised in in the church is pretty different. This show is crazy, I totally see why it makes good television. I just also wanted to add my two cents that what goes for one group of people (even within the same religion) is not true for everyone. I really appreciated your handling of the topic ❤ fantastic recap

wow, I do remember being a young officer's wife, and some were SO YOUNG. And husbands were gone often. Some were married at 17. (lots of Mormon moms). I just remembering sitting there with my normal friends, and getting to the point where we just popped popcorn and gossiped. Young wives, living far from family, no experience living away from mom and dad....and the older wives just "what can we do with these teenagers?" (DUI's galore from them). So I'm all in for this Wives thing, thanks!

OMG I was waiting for you to do a video on this! Also, I watched an ex-mormon YTer Alyssa Grenfell's opinion on this show. It is really interesting to hear someone formerly from that community. And she does remind us that this is all staged (to a point) and edited to make us want to "love" certain characters and "hate" others. The producers already come in with an idea of who they are going to villainize and who they aren't. Honestly if they didn't reality tv would be boring cause let's face it the more messy it is the more people will watch it.

I had to turn off the first episode when the domestic violence police call came into play. Triggered the heck out of me. And then I was worried for hours if she was okay but also couldn't traumatize myself to watch and see.

Finally finished the show... perfect reality show, 10/10. I didn't know anything about their TikTok scandals before going in, I thought they were just influencers who happened to be Mormon making content together. But I DID see the RSV video Whitney did... the gasp I gusped when I realized that was her.

I knew absolutely nothing about any of these women, and the only tictok I had seen was the RSV one before watching the show, but like you, I didnt know that was Whitney until she said it was her. I could also watch about 80 seasons of this. We need more laughing gas content tho. 😂

Loved your analysis of Secret Wives of Mormon Wives. The first episode is chaotic, like you cannot make ALL that up. As a real housewife connoisseur, producers would have dreamed for this storyline and plot. Like each episode had my attention and forgot it was 45 minutes long lol

If yall haven't yet, you have to here about this show from the perspective of the ex mormon community on youtube (mormon stories, cults to consciousness, alyssa grenfiled, and more) It's fascinating to hear what they recognize and relate to from their experience with the religion within the show.

Yes, although Jen’s husband is very wrong (I hate him) about Vegas I’m also looking at Jessi sideways. She knows how religious Jen is and to put her in that situation by “surprise” was not okay. She didn’t respect Jen’s boundaries.

My son just informed me that he went to high school with Mayci. Same graduating class but he didn’t really interact with her. Looked into her a little bit and she has a pretty tragic past. I’m actually kind of surprised that she’s involved in all of this.

i didn't even know about this show until this video, but i absolutely would watch a regular recap of it by you, this was a wild and entertaining video. as for other niche internet communities that should have RH style hulu shows, i want cosplayers. not the extremely professional and famous ones, the ones that are specifically 20+ and tiktok/internet famous. and even more specifically, the ones that are the most caustic to be around. i'm part of multiple nerd and fan communities, and there are absolutely people with the same weird, vibe arsenic personalities as some of the the SLMW cast-- though, potentially more sinister since fan communities online will not hesitate to doxx you over perceived transgressions, especially if someone with more followers tells them to. i want a total asshole that looks like a manic pixie dream girl and cosplays junko to start hostile fake friendship beef with people for my amusement, but i refuse to open tiktok anymore.

I haven't seen the show, but from how you are recount the chip and dales situation, I can give some context. In mormonism, they taught us (circa 2011...it changes depending on the year) to ALWAYS wear the garments unless swimming. She might have had slighty different rules around them since leadership is trying to keep the women of the Church active and garments have caused infections for us, so they have updated some things. The church also taught us that the garments help us remember the promises we made with God in the temple, and help the Holy Ghost be with us. So, if Jen is super devout, she likely was having a panic attack due to thinking that she was letting Satan in by 1. forgetting her garments and 2. even going to that establishment. Who knows what the reality show contract mandates her to do in order to collect the money to provide for her family, so that may have also factored into her panic and not knowing how to get out of the situation.
@c471Ай бұрын
And the emotional manipulation within the church itself and seemingly Jen's marriage is so horrible. In Mormonism, divorce basically makes you a social outcast... "No one wants a half eaten cookie or chewed gum" were the chastity lessons for us as teenagers. In Mormonism, a threat of divorce is a threat to not only take the kids away in this life, but also in the next life. Men can be sealed in the temple to multiple women (such as after divorce or his wife dies), but women can only be sealed to one man, meaning they have to choose who their children would be sealed to- their biological father, or their new husband.
