Liam has pissed off the 1D fandom for YEARS. He has a laundry list of BS he said to the public; The Duck Dynasty tweet, how he said pride flags made him uncomfortable bc they had to do with Larry (when they clearly don't), the lyrics for "Both Ways", talking about how he wouldn't let Harry babysit his kid then having that weird obsession with him, constantly bringing up the idea of a reunion and then telling the world that other members told him to be quiet about that, having terrible music overall, he's been a mess. And him having the nerve to bring up Zayn's upbringing wasn't at all needed. He was set up to be the leader of 1D, until Harry & Zayn pretty much took that spotlight.

As a former Liam girl that is ALSO bisexual, I have been having a terrible time. I was one of the few people who genuinely loved Liam and rooted for him when he announced that he was going solo. And then the music came out and it was just constant disappointment. I was always under the impression that Zayn and Liam had a great relationship post-hiatus. With all the time that’s passed, it’s clear he feels a form of jealousy towards Zayn and Harry for the attention they got when they were teens. Some people have already said this, but there is a LITTLE bit of truth to what Liam said about being “The Face” of 1D. In the beginning he was very much the one with the most solos and was always front and center. And then they noticed how much attention Harry and Zayn got from the fans, and he got pushed to the background a little bit. In terms of attention during their official debut, it was Harry, Zayn, Liam, Louis, and Niall. I wouldn’t be surprised if Simon told him what he wanted to hear to get him to sign on to the group. Like “Oh it’ll just be for a little while, then you can go solo and be everything you wanted to be!“ He says he’s going to therapy. Mmmmm….I don’t know that he is. He’s been deeply insecure for as long as he’s been in the public eye, and it’s clear that hasn’t changed.

I agree so much, Liam was also my favourite. It's sad to see him take that road when he was so talented, back then I would have never imagined that's what he'd become . About the therapy comment, even Amber Heard went to therapy for many years and is still very toxic and dangerous. Personally, every single negative thing that folk say he’s done, when I’ve researched it I’ve been mystified by how the real events have been misrepresented and misinterpreted to negative effect, so I’m still his fan. But I think he needs help, which at this point can only come from him. So I’m not gonna go onto some SM platform and ridicule him or add to the hate he’s already receiving and I won’t unfollow him etc… I’m just gonna watch, pray and hope with all my heart that he finds whatever he needs to pull himself out of his addiction. Everyone seems to be reacting to the 1D/Zayn portion of the interview, which I get, but I feel like the stuff he’s said about Bear, and Cheryl especially, was extremely disrespectful. Full disclosure, I am a huge Cheryl fan. Her and Liam have agreed to keep Bear’s life as private as possible, which I support no question. So, in light of this, why are we being told that Cheryl haemorrhaged while giving birth? Who needs to know that? That is private, medical information that did not need to be shared, and given everything, I doubt Cheryl would want shared. Then the details of him showing up at their house to take Bear to school. Ok, fine, again, not something we need to know but it’s pretty minor. But then what he says Bear told him about it being “the biggest surprise of his life”? You know what that tells me? That Liam very rarely is present. A child of five doesn’t say that his dad showing up for something he regularly does (taking him to school) is a surprise, of any sort. He’s revealing himself to be an absent father, and dressing it up by praising Cheryl for letting him do what he wants. And then onto the comments that having a child is what broke them up. What. The. F*ck? He really said that with his whole chest. While in reality that may be true, does Bear need to hear that from his DAD?! Imagine being that child in a few years time, having access to the internet, and watching your father tell millions of people that you are the reason your parents split up. Yet more stuff for Cheryl to deal with at the time because we all know he’s not gonna be around to help with the inevitable, emotional fallout that will follow this. I’ve never been a fan of Liam, and this interview has turned me off him completely. He is acting half his age, with no regard for how his words affect those closest to him, in particular. I hope he learns to shut up and stop sharing things about a child that he’s claiming to keep private, and by extension, his mother.

Even with the drinking problem, it still doesn’t change what he’s said over the years. I think the problem is that when he drinks he reveals things about himself that he has hidden with years of media training. So in the end, when he’s sober he’s not showing how he actually feels/thinks, we are seeing a “fake” Liam, one that has been train on what to say and how to please people. But when he starts drinking, his defenses are low and well, he’s not in all 5 senses and we end up seeing the real him and people are confuse as to why he’s acting that way when in reality, that’s probably how he is when there aren’t any cameras around.

I lost any respect for Liam and Cheryl after finding out they named their poor child Bear Payne. 'Bare' is slang for 'lots of' in England so I can't hear that name without cringing. Also over the years Liam has given me 'lad' vibes, if any of you have watched Heartstopper, the character called Harry in the show is what I imagine is Liam's internal voice is like. I still can’t believe y’all actually made “Strip That Down” popular. I always thought that was a terrible song. It legit sounded like a rejected Justin Timberlake demo, as well as seeming so left-field because Liam never gave me r&b vibes. people speculating about the shoving situation and pitching reasons why it happened really feels like 2010-era fandom nonsense to me. Unless someone who was there said something about Liam saying something racially insensitive about Zayne and Harry pushing Liam to defended him, it just feels like fanfiction. Not saying that I don't believe Liam would say something like that, or that Harry would have a problem with it, or anything like that, but there are a million reasons why something could've happened AND with the way Liam told the story with his ~cool one liner~ implies to me that the whole situation may be pretty exaggerated. I think the thing about this interview is that it's a culmination of all of his time in and since 1D. Liam had always been the least favorite, the least recognizable to non-fans, and since the end of the band he's been the least successful with the worst music. In the past couple years he's spent so much time banking off of the band, talking about them in interviews to drum up hype and that's been very annoying to a lot of fans. We know there's not going to be a reunion, but he won't stop talking about the band. It's disappointing but not surprising.

Liam comes across as a man desperately trying to appear cool to men he perceives as cool and successful and masculine. I’m sure being a part of one direction, a group which received a lot of ridicule for being “for teen girls”, could have entrenched Liam further into toxic masculinity and deepened his insecurities. It’s quite obvious the attention Liam is seeking from doing this interview. It’s always seemed clear to me that he has had the least amount of support from fans these past few years. Each of the boys, even Louis and Niall(who were not the most popular during the 1D days), have a much bigger and more dedicated fan base than Liam. It’s clear that he hopes doing these interviews and other things with relevant influencers will help him in that regard.

Yes, like if you look at the general public I think Louis is the one people don’t remember or “least popular”, but when you look at them as the band and the opinions of the fandom you can see that Liam never really had a strong and if I’m being honest any solo fandom and I think that’s a big part of why his solo career hasn’t worked, like his hit song Strip that down popularity mainly relaid on the general public cause it was a radio song everyone listened and liked in 2017, but the thing with that is that the general public is they might like a song and not give a F about the artist . And with the rest of the boys the difference is that their music it’s backed up by the support of fans which is something more consistent than doing radio hits, using Louis again as an example the general public never gave him that much attention on his solo career but he still has millions of streams on all his songs, sold out tour etc and all because of him having die hard fans and I think that’s what Liam is missing.

Started thinking of couple of things while watching this and first of all I find it really interesting comparing this to Harry’s recent interview with Zane Lowe and how reflective Harry seems to be when talking about the 1D years. He is very careful and choosing his words wisely to both include the others and talk of his own experiences whereas Liam appears to be a polar opposite and shows very little respect for the other members and their experiences of before/during/after being in the band. I think as well what Liam was saying about X Factor is interesting as a concept especially after watching Zoe Alexander’s videos about how they created a narrative about her as well as the structure of the show and the contracts the participants (many of them children!) had to sign, and how this affects how they can talk about X Factor and Simon Cowell etc. It seems that Liam still thinks of Simon as a great man when in fact he would’ve been the one to orchestrate much of Liam’s careers and the struggles that he will have had with it; and Liam takes this pain and rather wishes to push an agenda of sorts where the other members were the culprits/reason for any struggles. Another thing I noted was how Liam starts his Honorary Member speech with “but from what I’ve heard” but is quick to add “he [Simon] told me that story himself” when he sees the others’ reactions, using it to confirm and validate his claim. Found that very interesting and in a way very very sad.

I was never into One Direction or 5SOS or really any bands, but I have taken a very interesting eye on the careers the 1D boys have had post-break up. As you point out in multiple places I find the psychology and the ramifications of that degree of fame and control while being as young as they were at the time to be very interesting, as well as the slight inherent awkwardness from the fact they were shoved together for market appeal instead of naturally coalescing into a group. The various ways in which they've responded to that pressure and made use of it in the post 1D-careers has been very interesting to me, and I think it can be instructive regarding the kind of creepy and dismissive way we commercialise young musicians.

In the comics Tony Stark is an alcoholic. Back in the 1970s there was an Ironman story arch called Demon In A Bottle which dealt with this. Liam Payne is also an alcoholic (as am I). I am also an ex-journalist and it is unethical and exploitive to conduct an interview with a person with substance abuse issues when they are under the influence.

“Honorary member” to me means “not a real member” not “the first member before it was even a thing” but upon googling maybe I’m misinterpreting the definition of honorary. Either way, the term gives a sad “Im not part of the team” vibe if you interpret it like I do or a horribly conceited vibe if you do it the kind of positive way of like he was so good he didn’t have to do the work.
@DeeL32 жыл бұрын
Naw I know what you mean. He said "honorary" and it made me think of honorary doctorate so it's like he's saying "I'm in the group but not official" I think he just used the wrong word.

You are right. Perhaps he meant founding member? Original member? I love that no one in the room had sufficient intelligence to pick up on it. I also suspect Liam has told that story a lot in private and said that every time

I got the impression he was referring to Zayn. That he had a tendency to be violent and he was kinda making digs bc there were rumors GIgi and Zayn broke up bc Zayn was physical. And that he wasn't shocked and that's why Gigi's retweet's didn't age well. I agree that this interview could have been more productive if someone else had done it, I was getting so annoyed at the cohosts. Imagine interviewing someone and not doing more research about the person.

Don’t think anyone will really see this, and it doesn’t really matter anymore, but I kind of needed a place to lay out all my thoughts since Liam passed. I’m the one who made that tweet that Ashton liked years ago now. I never said anything about it here because I couldn’t really justify it without it sounding like bragging and also getting so much attention on my twitter account for just 2 seconds was intimidating. Not to mention there was always something that felt wrong about me acknowledging it to others. But now I kind of need somewhere I can talk about it now, after everything, I guess. I genuinely stand by my observations about 5sos being exploited, and how that went unacknowledged by Liam in that moment, and it was not really talked about a lot before by others then so being able to say that and having a member acknowledge it in a way felt validating that I was making a valid point. And validation was what I always took away about Ashton’s like. Not the “shady” implications of it relating to his potential personal feelings to Liam, but that what I said about what they experienced being exploited resonated with him. Seeing it appear here was really surreal but I’m glad Amanda is such a balanced KZbinr and commentator and I appreciate her approach to my tweet and in general to Liam in this interview, being critical while also empathetic. Everything seems bad now in the retrospect, but she was genuinely more balanced than most people talking on him at the time. Anyway, after that like, I saw my tweet everywhere, all over twitter and obviously here but also tumblr, instagram, reddit, even on deuxmoi of all things. I justified leaving it up because of the traction it brought to the discussion of 5sos’ hardships, and also because I had such disbelief at getting a like from my favorite member of 5sos after 7 years of being on 5sos stan twitter (at only 27 likes no less, with no tagging or explicit mentions of them). But a part of me still felt off about it. Getting all that attention and finally noticed by an idol I really look up to for something I tweeted that was so snarky made me feel bad. I kept looking back at my wording and wishing I had left out the unnecessary comment about his career. If I had known it would’ve gained traction, well obviously it would’ve looked a bit differently. 27 likes was about all I expected. I know saying it “felt wrong” and I “felt ashamed” now doesn’t mean anything or change the impact my tweet had, and it’s not really provable anyway that I did regret it (although I did tweet at the time that getting that like made me realize how much people you talk about can actually see what you’re saying and to be careful with your words, because I really didn’t realize it would get noticed). I also know that really my tweet was just a drop in a bucket and tame in terms of the trend of hating on Liam, so this whole think piece is probably unnecessary. And it was two years ago, before all of this peaked in what just happened. But I just feel the need to say it was the one and only time I really spoke on Liam like that. I could see something was going on for him and I have felt guilty ever since really, even though yes, I left it up. Soon after I took a long break from my twitter anyway, it’s not like I was some twitter superstar but everything made me self conscious because it felt mean-spirited and unlike me. Seeing the news of his death made me feel so sad and shocked. He was far from perfect, but I had hoped he would be able to be ok over time and have a good comeback. I was a 1d fan back in the day and I cared about him, though my tweet didn't show much empathy. The longer I sit with it, the worse I feel. I also saw something in the past couple of days he had apparently posted sometime after the podcast in response to the memes and to criticism from it, which I had never seen before, about how he was sorry about what he said, and that he was going through something but took it out on others and had a chip on his shoulder he had learned from. It really made me cry and regret it more. And then I saw some people on Twitter criticizing 5sos’ post honoring Liam because of Ashton’s like of my tweet, and it made me feel doubly worse. I hate that he is getting grief for liking a tweet from two years ago because of my careless wording. He is allowed to mourn someone he had a complex brotherhood with. He is also allowed to acknowledge the exploitation he experienced. I don’t think he wanted hate directed at Liam at all. Just because he liked my snarky tweet doesn’t mean that he wanted this. I didn't even want this. Anyway, I hope his family and those who knew him can find peace, and all the boys and other fans too. I feel bad for the part I played. I know this is literally just some pity party comment and no one is entitled to engage in good faith, but I’ve been ruminating and yes, feeling guilty over this and figured this might be somewhere I could fess up about it. And please don’t send hate to 5sos mourning just because of one Twitter like. Also, be kind when you can. You can still be critical but leading with more empathy or restraint isn’t a bad thing.

am i the only one who got a racist vibe from him talking down on zayn’s upbringing? like i get he might know things the public doesn’t, but it’s still a very uncomfortable thing to say, especially considering he used the only POC member for his weird example. either he’s really ignorant and tone deaf of how that would come across or just straight up racist.

Some notes on 5sos: they already had a manager and a publishing deal with Sony and a national tour happening in 2012 before Louis shared their video in late 2012. In 5sos' recent ten year anniversary videos they said they moved overseas to the UK without a guarantee of anything. I'm not sure when Matt Emsell became their manager because he is British, but his only other artist is Matt Corby so it's likely he's always been Sydney based. Louis sharing their video was essential to their success, but I'm sure it was a risk free way for 1D and Modest management to gauge whether 5sos would be a good choice of opener for the Take me Home tour. The audience responded extremely positively and it was after that that I first heard of 5sos thru people I followed on Tumblr who had previously been partial to one direction. You know how Tumblr was back then: you follow someone for the Misfits gifs and you also get swamped with their Larry conspiracy memes

I've said it in another video posted about Liam. My friend is a super Directioner and I was a casual listener. She adores Zayn and Louis and I had a soft spot for Niall. Niall is cute in my opinion. And also knew Harry because he is the most popular member. Never knew that there were five members, because I only knew of four and thought "Must be four members since those are the names, I only hear." And one day I was at the mall with my friend and I noticed on a poster that there was a fifth member. And asked my friend "Who is he?" And she was like "Oh that's Liam, he's in the band too." And I was like "Really? I didn't know there were five members." LOL
