+Bryan McGrath what's re-gearing? (totally honest question)
@bryanmcgrath8214
@bryanmcgrath8214 5 жыл бұрын
@@shawn1928 the extremely simplified explanation is changing your ring and pinion gearing in the differentials to change how many revolutions of the driveshaft cause the wheels to make one revolution. It's usually done after going up several size tires to put less stress on the engine and transmission. It's similar to downshifting when you're going up a steep hill to more efficiently put power to the wheels. This can come at the cost of top speed depending on gear ratio and tire size.

Found this on the web: When an engine requires lower levels of octane to “fire,” the overall efficiency of the engine is also lowered, which means the engine works harder to achieve the same results. However, less fuel burns, which means the overall fuel-per-mile efficiency is increased because the engine is working at a reduced compression rate. In short, you can get higher miles-per-gallon at higher elevations, but the power of the engine is also somewhat reduced.
@michaeljacques7336
@michaeljacques7336 4 жыл бұрын
Glenn McEnroe you may have misinterpreted what you read a little. Octane rating is a fuel’s ability to resist “knock” which is when a fuel prematurely detonates due to the heat produced by the fuel/air mix being compressed. The octane rating of fuel has nothing to do with how much fuel is burned in and of its self. The higher the compression ratio the higher the efficiency (and power output) of the engine. Also running higher octane fuel allows for more aggressive timing, which makes more power and is more fuel efficient. The lower density of the air at higher elevations means that for each rotation of the engine less air is being taken in and less fuel can be burned, this does not make the engine more fuel efficient. Part of the energy released by the burning of fuel goes to propelling the car, but a large portion of that energy also goes to overcoming fictional losses within the engine and driveline. So at higher elevations the engine makes less power (and burns less fuel) per rotation but the frictional losses remain the same, this means that a larger proportion of the energy generated is consumed by engine friction rather than propelling the vehicle. This means far worse fuel economy. This is part of the reason a lot of piston powered air craft have turbochargers.

@Jason: Here’s what I figured out regarding the MPG’s: Reason #1: You gone from Florida (sea level) to Utah (not sea level) there by putting you further out on the earth’s circumference, so the 4 runner is actually 162 lbs lighter than it used to be. Reason #2: Florida’s atmosphere is really just water in a suspended state, and it’s actually an unexplained scientific mystery that the inhabitants in Florida don’t just drown. Also, water doesn’t burn that efficiently in your engine... Reason #C: Magic. I hope this helps explain things. AdventureWithDanan

Lower humidity, is the simple way to say this. Logic is all that is needed. Like firewood, any fuel to air ratio, burns in a dryer state. Wet firewood, no burn efficiency. Damp/wet air mixture/condensation in fuel, no burn efficiency. This is also where the weight loss comes from. Also, you have less drag from the shape of the Steel bumpers and skids, compensating for the weight.

How is the mpg with the added weight?
@peterkowalcheck8465
@peterkowalcheck8465 5 жыл бұрын
The fuel efficiency issue is a bit complicated. At higher elevations, the engine's octane requirement is deceased, which means the engine needs less octane to properly fire. This is why you can find 85 octane in high-elevation areas like Colorado, (instead of 87 octane). The engine's lower octane requirement also reduces the overall efficiency of the engine, which means the engine will have to work harder to achieve the same acceleration. Despite this loss in performance, less fuel is burned, which obviously results in a higher MPG. The reduced air resistance is also a factor, especially when travelling above 60 MPH. But the effects of a decreased octane requirement effect the MPG at all speeds. This is at least what I learned when I researched this while considering the effects of high altitude at drag races.
@fabulousoffroaddesigns5080
@fabulousoffroaddesigns5080 5 жыл бұрын
Peter Kowalcheck this is true but people don't generally change the fuel they burn in their engine during a trip. The other end of the equation is; 1- due to the lack of knock, the engine will advance it's timing further than it will at a higher barometric pressure. This increases efficiency slightly. 2- The lower amount of air and fuel in the cylinders reduces consumption at the same rpm. 3- Generally at cruising speed on the level you don't notice the reduced HP due to the thinner air you are pushing through. You only notice it when accelerating. All three factors come together to increase fuel economy at higher elevation.
@horus909

also, less atmospheric pressure means you have to open the throttle more to get the same air into the engine, so less throttling losses for the intake

Didn't want to read all the comments, the question may of already been answered with a better answer then mine, but with regards to better gas mileage at higher altitudes, your computer will always try to maintain the correct air/fuel ratio regardless of how much throttle input you give. If your vehicle were to use more gas with the thinner (or less) air, it would then be running rich. Hence you EFI system keeps the air fuel ratios in check so it uses less gas because of the less air at high altitudes. Of course it comes across feeling like it has less power.

There is a simple philosophy I have to utter when I see things that make me cringe "to each their own". I appreciate your videos sharing the human side of what you do and why, etc. I don't agree with all your product choices, nor agree with doing these things to a brand new rig. But I have watched your journey and your decision making process and don't argue with the logic of your choices. I purchased mine brand new(2018 TRD Off Road) and had a slew of modifications including what you have done here with the swing arm bumper planned out for mine. What you have done with/to yours in a short time I am just starting the journey. I have put on sliders. And that was a critical 1st step.(pardon the pun) Even over tires. But after watching them cut up the fenders to do this instal, it has made me cringe once again and I do not foresee me doing this modification in the nearest future. Instead, there are trailer hitch inserts that can carry spare cans, tire mounts(if need be) and HiLift Jacks. And I don't have to see my fenders cut up. lol Thanks for sharing. :)

You get more mileage at altitude because the fuel Mixture requires less fuel because there is less air to keep the mixture optimized by the ecu’s fuel map...... I would love you C4 low bumper for my new 2019 TRD Pro voodoo blue! Would be my first mod. Getting a supercharger in December! Also at altitude you would greatly benefit from the supercharger because you would have little to no HP loss you have at altitude. The supercharger maintains the 6psi of positive pressure no mater what the elevation.... you are losing almost 15% or more hp at your altitude.

You should, theoretically, get less MPG at higher altitudes because of a lower air pressure. Less air pressure, equals less air for combustion, which should equate to slower acceleration and lower MPG. Just my two cents...

The 4Runner has air dynamics of a brick. There is less air dynamic air resistance when driving at higher altitude because air is thinner (lower pressure and less density). I too noticed better gas mileage at higher altitude, especially at freeway speeds. This is why an airplane's wings have less lift at high altitude and also at higher air temperature. It's called - Density Altitude. Density altitude also increases with air temperature (air gets thinner). High moisture in the air also reduces air lift (and air resistance for a vehicle).

Nice mod with innovation,it is actually hard to setup front metal bumpers on that new 4Runner,because of it's wide radiator vent/grill and that massive plastic bumper which comes with the truck,you right now have the best 4x4 off-roader like a Jeep Wrangler,do you have plans for swapping the front ifs with a solid axle?

Supercharge it, you’ll be happier. I put a Kenne Bell on my LJ. Night and day. It drives like stock but has passing power and will handle grades while pulling a trailer.

I've follow your videos for quite some time, but don't recall a few things. You mention that you (or others might)question the cost you will suffer in performance and gas mileage. We (4x4 scene) fully except that but in the same breath we try to gain it back where it is posable. The question I have is have you matched up your ring and pinion with the tire size you are running. With the trailer you are towing while you are exploring you may want to gear it a tad lower to take some of the strain off your powertrain? Anyways Love what you are doing and keep up the great work! Thanks David

Cold air will give you more power and fuel efficiency. Most of the time its going to be colder in elevations, especially compared to Florida. Multiple things more than likely contribute to the differences. As someone else mentioned the thinner air etc

If your struggling with that you need to re-gear since you went up in weight and tire size. 5.29 gearing would probably suite you pretty damn well.

Slight difference in roads. Stop and go type roads are worse for economy. Utah from the parts I saw in salt lake and park city are not like Orlando Tampa st Pete or Sarasota fl. Florida is denser and you would be accelerating more often which is where you use the most fuel. Wind resistance at slow speed is not the cause.

The fuel efficiency of your vehicle has a lot to due with the quality of air and how much ethanol content in the gas. With Florida being a very humid state there is a lot water in the air. Your air filter can only stop so much of the water from reaching the combustion chamber. The More water you have in the system equals less of an explosion.which results in less power. Which in turn means the engine has to work harder to reach the same amount of performance . However the humidity won't show a drastic enough change for you to notice a difference in the capabilities for you to accelerate. But it can certainly drop your your fuel mileage a little bit. On another note most gas stations will say right on the pump the the gas contains at most 10% ethanol in the fuel. Ethanol has less energy than gasoline. Which will create the same effect as having the higher humidity content. With the gas station not giving a specific percentage of ethanol. It's possible that their might have more ethanol in Florida as opposed to somewhere else . Example 9% ethanol vs 5% ethanol. In summary the possibility of having higher humidity and/or more ethanol content playing a role with your fuel efficiency. It might be the reason why you'll notice a difference in fuel efficiency. Even though you'll have a lower content of oxygen at higher elevation. I hope this helps gives you an idea on why there is a difference.

Joshua Bowie The way I understand it, any weight added to the vehicle decreases the amount you can tow.

Jethronius Bronlo, yes, but not my question. The 4Runner can tow 5000lbs. If the bumper weighs 100lbs more than the factory, it just means you can only add 4900 more lbs. my question is, do CBI bumpers maintain the same tow rating as the factory. Can it still tow 5000lbs? Some bumpers change the hitch and no longer allow for the same tow rating.

The reason why you have better mileage at ALTITUDE is that the Fuel -Air mixture is a lower ratio due to the less dense air at that altitude. Therefore, the fuel required to maintain the proper performance is less.

My thoughts on the fuel eco at high altitude. From my experience working on old 22R carburated engines. Less oxygen. To keep air fuel ratio equal, ecu compensates fuel with oxygen measured. Ecu probably controls timing to help with power. Just my 2 cents.

You’re mileage either way is not good at all, whether in Utah or Florida. Located in the DFW metroplex, and I average 17-18, just driving on city streets with almost zero freeway use, in a 2015 Trail model. But mine is bone stock, right down to the OEM tires, which I haven’t worn out yet. I get 20-24 mpg on the open road, and 12 mpg towing a 19’ Jayco Hummingbird travel trailer. At some point, I want to do some of the upgrades you’ve done to your 4Runner, but I can’t help but think that you’re probably a little heavy on the throttle if that’s the mileage you’re getting. I learned when I first bought mine that the mileage WILL drop into the 14-15 mpg range if I don’t pay attention to the green ECO light on the speedo. But if I do pay attention to it, mileage is consistently 17mpg or better.
