Hunting shells at low tide, especially on Kice Island means shells and beach treasures. I even managed to find yet another bucket list shell. Kice never, ever disappoints!

I love your videos so much! I went to stump pass on my vacation because of one of your videos (I’m from Ohio the drive was insane haha) and I found a few of my bucket list shells! My friends thought it was so crazy I could identify so many shells and kept asking me what each was named. One of the first times I’ve ever gone to the ocean I found a TRUE tulip that’s measured just over four inches! It was so cool learning what the shell was from watching your videos and it’s crazy to me how gorgeous and intact this thing is. Thanks for the cool videos! I can’t wait to go back and eventually go to kice

I love your low cal Buttercup Lucine or Anodontia alba. I will now think of light color or washed our shells as diet shells and think of you! Hahaha! I so wish we had a larger selection of shells, diet or full calorie shells, here on the shores of Lake Erie. We do have some a good selection and amount of beach glass which many people collect. Some folks make beautiful jewelry out of them. I personally like to collect the beautiful Mother-of-Pearl looking pieces from the inside of the clam shells. Thank you once again for share your time on the island with us.

My family and I just came back from Marco Island. This was our second year going there and it had become our favorite place to go on vacation. My brother, sister in law and I just love to shell. We have turned it into a friendly competition. We booked Hemingway Water Shuttle, one that was recommended by you, and they are absolutely amazing. Very friendly family. We also did kayaking to Kice and it was our first time kayaking, it wasn’t the easiest but boy were we glad we did it. We found so many Murex it was crazy! Just want to let you know that we appreciate and enjoy your videos. We watch them as a family when I visit them at their home. Your voice sounds lovely as well =)

That golden olive was awesome! And all those gaudy's were 10/10. The mystery white shell does look a lot like a Sanibel Turrid, but it seems slightly weird to me. Then again, I can't think of anything else it could be, so I guess it's just an awesome white (albino?) color form. That light FFC I think could be considered an albino, but I guess it just depends what you classify albino as. Great walk as always :)

Hello beach-duvet, Netherlands Beach Friend (that was a mouthful!) Kice is always so good to me. It's so much work getting out there, but it's so worth it! And I actually wanted to give snorkeling a try earlier this week but the water was too cloudy so I walked and scooped instead. I have my mask on the ready and I do hope to try snorkeling - I just have to find the right conditions. And it's getting rainy here in the evening/afternoons so that's making trying to hit low tide a bit more tricky too ☺️ I hope everything is good by you and all the news you've been getting has been positive ❤️❤️❤️

Hi👋👋 I was wondering if you have ever considered posting a video of your collection: how you organise, store, display, etc. Also, I'd be interested to know what literature you consult for classification. I have many reference books, but also consult the net. Have you ever been shelling anywhere other than Florida? What's your best non-shell find? I found a silver ring by Tous the day after I got married in November 2016. I gave it to my mother-in-law. Do you ever find any shells that are "castaways" from different areas? I'm so sorry for so many questions, I'm just curious about your shelling. Great you rope in your husband. I used to go quite often, but I had a baby last October, so am just clasifying shells from years before. One last question: do you collect shells from outside the Florida area? Personally, I wouldn't be able to avoid the Pinnas! All the best, Emma 🤗
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Emma! As far as my collection I did show it in a past video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5fcYZ2iZdigpqc I also put some shells to the side to sell and others to do projects with. I've managed to complete 2 projects thus far. A shell mirror: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5eYhImjbdJopJo And a shell photo frame: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nmq4eqmnobStna8 I have not gone shelling anywhere other than Florida. I've been to plenty NJ beaches but never found anything! My best non-shell find was seeing a loggerhead turtle mama laying her eggs on Sanibel. And yes, I have found "wedding shells" which are shells that aren't from this area. I didn't know any better when I found my first one but I've learned ☺️ I am always suspect about where shells come from so I have not purchased any shells for my collection as of yet. I have done a bunch of shell exchanges and I've been gifted some shells but if I don't know that they were collected ethically, I don't purchase them. I enjoy those cute little snail critters as much as I do their shells!

Hi! Love your videos! I have a couple of questions that i hope you will see and respond too♥️. #1 Where do you launch to kayak to kice, and how long does it take to get out there by kayak? #2 can you recommend a public launch that would offer the shortest paddle distance to kice island? Thank you for the great videos...happy shelling!

Caxambus Marina was the marina I would launch from in Marco Island. It was destroyed by Hurricane Ian, but news on the street is you can launch from there again. It's about a 30 minute paddle from the marina over to Kice.

I got nothing for you for VA, but hopefully someone else will. Shoot, I'd have a hard time telling you about any other beaches than the ones I visit down here in SWFL. Now as far as the shoes, the ones I use aren't perfect, but they do the job: amzn.to/3wIwanv I take the liner out and I'm good to go! Sand will still get in the shoes, however they are comfortable enough (I walk for miles in them) and they will protect your feet.

I've used E6000 on all my sea shell projects and it definitely works great on shells. I'd maybe give that a try. And that worm colony was the first one I've ever seen too! I've read about them, but never got to see one. I'm not sure what the regulations are in removing wood from beaches - I assume if it's come loose naturally you're not harming anything by taking it but I don't know what impact actually cutting any of the dead wood off the trees would do.

Glass can actually be beneficial to sea critters. The salt water dissolves the glass and releases minerals that are essential for the microscopic life in the sand, which helps feed other creatures higher up in the food chain.

@@SWFBeachLife Glass Beach in California is full of life thanks to the glass that's been dumped there for decades. You can't collect any, though; it's against the law. However, I've gone to San Juan Island almost every year since 1996. In the past 7 years, I've been bringing broken glass & pottery with me, washed and ready for the ocean to do its work. That way one day, some lucky person will find a lovely piece of polished treasure for them to take home. The owners of the cabin we stay at brings marbles for the same reason. Now that I know how beneficial glass is to ocean life, it's a double win.

The ribbed cantharis and horse conch shell looks very similar. I think I would have a hard time telling them apart. You have a good eye for spotting the tiniest shells there. Lots of good shell finds going through the piles.

Have you ever considered collecting a box of shells for fans to purchase. I live in Montana and am totally wishing for the worm critter creations and prices of different worm snails and reef bits. I make pine needles baskets from our ponderosa pines here and would love to put some of those things into my baskets. I like the shells for sure we do t have any here lol but I really am intrigued by the unique shaped non traditional shell things too

I went through quite a process trying to figure out how to sell shells. I tried eBay (eh), I set up a store on my website (way too time intensive) so now I do sell shells, but I just do each order custom through email. I'd be happy to give you more details! Shoot me an email at swfbeachlife@gmail.com and I will give you the info.

There are quite a few. If you like the kayaking experience, I would recommend SWFL Shell Guide (www.swflshellguide.com). If you would prefer to just take a boat there, I would reach out to Reel Kind (www.reelkind.com). Each tour will take you to where the good stuff is!

If you are only getting one, it's Florida's Living Beaches:amzn.to/3aqkmO0 It's a FANTASTIC resource for all things beach here in Florida. Another book that's been helpful is this one: amzn.to/3G8ngWo I find the books that concentrate on the shells in a particular area are more helpful than random books on shells. I hope these help!

I love to go to SWF but another cool beach is the Fort Pickens area by destin, although destin is crowded it is the completely different for Fort Pickens. Now you won’t find as many keepers as you will at SWF, but you will find some shark eyes (live ones too), lots of calico scallops, Venus shells, and I’ve found 2 woodcock murex’s their too. I know it’s a far drive from SWF but it’s nice having the beach too yourself (with fishermen) Btw what is the best time in the morning to get to kice island? And is ok to kayak to kice around spring time?
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife 2 жыл бұрын
Good to know about Fort Pickens! I do intend on doing more traveling one day - but for now I'm working and trying to put out a new video every week so it's a little tough in the scheduling department. The marina you need to use to launch from opens at 7am, so you can only get out there after parking and launching and paddling out there. I'd say if you're really quick about it all it would take maybe 45 minutes to get out there. And Spring is a fantastic time to visit Kice!
