SWFL Eagles_ Home Sweet Homebody E15: Comfy & Comical & A Flying Beauty 08-31-20

This morning, H & M flew to the office oak before leaving the pasture area. E15 watched but did not follow. Armed with a full crop and casting a pellet early, E15 was content to watch the pasture activity before flying from branch to branch in the nest tree and the front snags. E15 also explored the nest for treasures. E15 is such a joy to watch at 153 days of age growing into a strong smart juvenile right before our eyes. As I prepared to leave for the day, E15 took flight, vocalizing and circling the pasture and church area before flying high to the NE and out of sight. (E15 returned 3 1/2 hours later to perch with an adult in the pine across the road.)

Yes, E15, you fly much much better than a helicopter! Cute to see her working on the nest. One of my fondest memories of SWFL is watching E14 moving sticks around and even incubating the unhatched egg. I know it was instinct but I couldn't help but think how intelligent that little guy already was.

What a nice way to end my day! I love it when she turns her head sideways, she's so darned cute. Hopefully (I think) she'll be around when you come back. Thank you wskrsnwings for sharing your special moments with us!! Looks like they weren't able to get all the cameras down, and I assume they haven't been able to cut the grass yet either. She is doing her best to not be lonely by contemplating her life experiences and wondering is this all there is. She has some great surprises in life ahead of her and they will unfold when she is ready for another epiphany. Line upon line, precept upon precept. From glory to glory. I'm trying to figure out: Is she a Mama's girl or a Daddy's girl? And if Daddy and Mommy are building a new nest home, just maybe they will build a basement for their winged darling.

yooperlooper, it takes skill to catch food. The juveniles will learn to hunt throughout their first year by watching other eagles fishing and hunting, by trying it themselves until they succeed. Until then they live off carrion and what they can steal from other birds.

15 is on borrowed time. The next nesting season is going to start in a about a month and 15 will not be tolerated in H&MS idyllic pasture to protect the next eaglets. That is unless Eagles are going to change their behaviors and start acting like crows. Seems 15 has designs on that possibility. ;)

Janet Wild, we just have to wait and see what happens. E15 will not build a nest and have a mate until they are 5 years of age. Bald eagles reach maturity at 5 years of age.

The Amazing Life Of Dixie The Border Collie , E15 had a full crop in my video. The adults are still feeding her and she very well could be stealing foods from other raptors and "water" birds.The juveniles will learn about hunting throughout their first year by watching mom, dad and other eagles fishing and hunting, by trying it themselves until they succeed. @wskrsnwings Vicki...I heard what sounded like a juvie calling out to its parents....but couldn't see it. Online someone said a mockingbird imitates a Bald Eagle perfectly but it kept calling out 5 or 6 times then stop and repeat again.....I waited to see if it would move, then a small bird flew out of the area the sound was coming from but it wasn't a mockingbird....any other bird imitate an eagle ? It sounded just like 15 calling for food.

Some of the little birds that hang out with E15 are Starlings and they are incredible imitators (I don't know if they immitate Eagles). They're not nearly as loud as mockingbirds, though. Last week I found out that pet Starlings learn to talk, so I looked up videos about that.

Jennifer Alexander, It is normal for the adults to feed the juveniles until they leave the area, but when they don't leave, we have yet to know the answer.

Road kill near the eagle nest here along the lake erie shore is left for the turkey vultures, hawks, and crows. Eagles won't stoop to eating road kill since fish are so plentiful.

In Utah,more Eagles get hit by cars eating road kill and die than anything thing else,If their crops are full, it's hard for them to get up into air ,They always say, if you see birds eating road kill,slow down,there might be a Eagle there.Most people think they will just fly away,See Vicky,I'm learning.

MaryLou Sallette, yes, we saw M15 deliver a catfish to the nest for E15 last Saturday evening. With the cams off and on and the eagles out of view more often, it is hard to know how much they are feeding E15. But when E15 is seen, h/she has a nice full crop.
