SWFL Eagles_ H & M Are Busy At New Nest ~ E15 Lunges At M15 In Old Nest 10-26-20

Harriet, M15 and E15 greeted the dawn with their "good morning" vocals. E15 dropped to the nest to eat some leftover roadkill while H & M flew to the west pasture to continue building a new nest. They each added sticks, sometimes placing them together, always with a "discussion" as to where the sticks should go. E15 watched H & M flying back and forth to the west pasture snag but did not fly over there. E15 then flew to perch in the office area. M15 flew to the old nest to check it and have some of the leftover roadkill too. (Harriet was relentless about adding more sticks and did not join M15.) But E15 saw dad in the nest and came flying straight back to claim the food. M flew to the attic and E15 joined him there, mantling and begging for "a better breakfast". M dropped to the nest and ate again... well, E15 dropped back down and reclaimed the food. When M tried to steal the food back, E15 lunged at him. Each day is amazing to watch and learn as we continue to have E15 remain in this new season.

They're all amazing, but I adore M15. He's so devoted to H and he seems to want to take care of E15, too. I tend to think M15 went to the nest to check on E15, and have an eaglelike 'discussion'. He can get his own food anytime he wants from other sources. But no, he visits E15 and plays a little food game. I just love him.

Thank you for letting us see the building of a new nest, even if it breaks my heart. The cams didn't get their overhaul because 2020 has been one for the books - a second clutch after E14 died, an offspring that won't go away, and now a new nest. We won't have cams for egg watch, pip watch, hatch watch, bobble heads, feedings, etc. Maybe you will be able to start seeing them through the rails. I was so counting on the new season to get me through what will be a long, dreary, scary winter. I appreciate your efforts and know that you, too, will be missing these things.

Moss seems like a nice soft nest material. I heard a story when I was younger that small red bugs live in the moss. They can cause itching and irritation to the eyes.I do not know if that information is true or not but it may explain why the eagles don't use more of it in their nests.

Thank you for this video. I feel kind of sad that we won't be able to watch the nesting season this year. Maybe there is still a chance that E15 will leave and H&M can go back to their nest. Last season Channel Island eagles started a new nest, but then went back to their old one. Sadly, the eggs broke, but it was still their intention to use the old nest after building a new one. Whatever happens, I know you will keep us informed.

Hi Vicki thank you so much for another day at the nest! Your just the best ever at recording and talking to the Eagles saying some of the very things I’m saying as I watch! No way, that is when I bet Harriet and M15 will stand their ground and treat her like an intruder at their new nest. They are building it because of her. E15 hasn't gone over there at all and I would think if she did even now, they would chase her away. This is there new domain not hers.

JPEagleLove, we will never know why they are building another nest, but eagle pairs are known to have more than one nest built in their territory. E15 does not want the nest, only the food that is brought there. All eagles know that a nest is a good place to find food.

Something like that..about 6 odd months) in FL.. I have a feeling this lady’s vid’s are going to become Extremely Popular in the Eagle Watching World :-) Personally, I love her ‘good jobs’ !!

Excellent videoing, Thank you for getting these videos so we can watch them build their new nest. No doubt this is where they are going to have their new babies and I would bet is E15 even comes and tries to get food in the pantry once the eaglets are born, they will definitely chase her away from this nest, as it is their domain not hers. This nest I would think is where they will draw the line with E15. I will just be sorry not to be able to watch the laying of eggs, to the birth and growing of the babies. Next year maybe the Pritchetts will be able to put a camera around it. I am really going to miss watching them and appreciate you will keep us informed with videos. They sure are busy and working fast on that new nest now but they have to if history proves itself as she will be laying eggs within the month as she has before. I do wish they wouldn't let E15 bully them like they do. Looks like E15 watches them build the new nest too, she has to know what they are doing. It will be an interesting year if E15 stays around as the new eaglets begin to fledge and go to the pond, how will E15 treat them? Assuming she stays away from the new nest while they are being raised and not trying to steal the food for the babies. This is great I am sure for those Eagle experts to watch and learn the dynamics of this situation, since it is so well recorded through the cameras. Lots of questions and I expect we will get the answers as time goes on.

Sherrie, please remember E15 is not bullying the adults. E15 is behaving as raptors do - nothing more, nothing less. There are no “bullies” in the raptor world. There is no other thought than “I don’t want you to have any of my food”.

Eileen Jones, Harriet and her previous mate, Ozzie, built the original nest in 2006. In 2016, the nest disintegrated and Harriet and M15 built a new nest in the same spot. USFWS guidelines do not allow any disturbance near nesting eagles in FL from 10/1-5/15. So the cams cannot be moved or new ones installed this season.

victoria hanlon, yes, eagles do build in snags and also on towers. Eagles look for a structure that is tall with easy access for flying in and out of the nest.

If this new nest is for H to lay her eggs, she might go after E15, if she decides to get in the nest with Harriet or parks herself on a branch, in that new tree, she could see another side of sweet mom. H has been really patient regarding E15 staying this long and taking over mom & dad’s nest, that they have used and raised many young juvies that have gone on to live their lives and find many new adventures. So far E15 has not seen the wrath if his mom Harriet. If he does, E15 just might rethink staying there and might then move on. But who knows, that other nest could be for E15, just to get her out of their original nest once and for all!!

SOCIETYDWELLIN GIFD, only H & M know why they are building a new nest. It could be partly due to E15 sticking close to the original nest. The adults are focused on preparing for a new season and laying of eggs now and will choose only one nest for egg laying.

sharon MacLean, E15 is out on their own, he/she just has not left the others as we usually see. The adults continue to tolerate E15, still bringing food at times. We do not know why H & M are building another nest. Many eagle pairs have more than one nest built in their territory but only use one each season.

Because E15 stay and occupy the nest, they have to build another nest, so Harriet can lays her eggs in late November. E15 so aggressive and rude. She kicked mom and dad out the nest.

It is normal for eagles to have more than one nest in their territory. We won’t know which one they will use this year until Harriet lays her eggs. H and M started building their 2nd nest several years ago. I’m sure E15 is influencing their behaviors since this is a new experience for them.

Vicki, are mom & dad building a new nest because E15 refuses to leave? Also, are they going to leave that big beautiful nest, that took years to build, to E15?! One more question; If and when E decides to leave for good will she be able to take care of herself? Since she depends so much on her parents for food, I'm concerned if she can survive on her own. It's a 50/50 chance for eagle survival but I'm concerned that it's much less for her. I hope I'm wrong. Please reply. You know so much more about birds of prey than I.

In 2018 there was an Audubon watched nest (no cameras) just 20+/- miles from H & M's nest where one of the juveniles remained through the whole next nesting season. The male was seen feeding the juvie every now and then; the juvie left the area 2 or 3 times for 3-4 days but always returned; the juvenile that remained was seen perching with the new fledgling juvenile that next spring and they both dispersed from the area after that.
