Swimming And Back Pain: The Do's and Don'ts of swimming for back pain relief. Swimming and back pain is a pretty common topic of discussion when it comes to navigating low back pain relief. As simple as it may seem swimming and back pain need to be looked at from multiple angles before we assume it's for you.

Today I want to dive into the topic of swimming for back pain relief and give you some do's and don'ts of using swimming for lower back pain relief. We are going to cover why swimming isn't for every bad back, how to navigate your back pain while swimming, how to know when the swimming is helping or hurting, the best swimming style for lower back pain, and more.

My very first form of therapy after L5-S1 fusion was water therapy, at about 7 weeks. I was able to get in the water and just do high knees and scissor kicks. It really helps me a ton. Then I was able to start swimming, mostly freestyle with a pull buoy. I’ve been swimming ever since. But I do agree, this can’t be my only source of exercise. Core strengthening is a must. Walking was the best pain relief for me from the day of surgery on.

I gotta say.. there are a myriad of back pain sufferers out there that can’t do many cardio exercises like running or cycling so swimming can really help those people improve their cardio. IMO swimming can “strengthen your life outside of the pool”

swimming is my drug of choice. I have a small jet pool. Swim every day. It has saved me mentally and physically.

It's an in ground custom pool. No brand.

Thanks As someone that has been technically learning freestyle (to beat my 8 yr old… never gonna happen BTW), A few points to add To swim perfectly flat & smooth freestyle, you need to engage your core or your legs sink, trust me my legs sink, and my speed stalls. So swimming requires and builds core and lower back strength. Freestyle also requires rotation… which I think is good, but unsure on positive/negative effects for your discs? I guess your pain will determine that. Swimming with a pull buoy negates leg rotation so may protect from rotation but allow you a good feel good cardio workout. As I’m still learning freestyle and now have a disc issue my plan will prob be this. Gentle swimming with Finns and a float! I can maintain a perfect neutral spine position, I get feel good factor and what I call ‘swim mediative’ relaxation. Plus I’m working my core and lower back muscles but really gently as the Finns give me easy propulsion and lift my legs. I’m also practicing my side breathing, not lifting my head which may arch my back, just an FYI THE Breath is the bloody hardest part of freestyle IMO Well that’s my take, but my mantra will be GENTLE GENTLE

Very informative. I’ve experienced swimming fast flares up My back. Your video gave some really good points to work on. Its very rare I subscribe a channel on the first video.

I have a disc injury from one year ago I started swimming recently and use the doggy and bear style and butterfly swimming but it’s made my back so much worse trying to work out what I’m doing wrong

Stop working out use heating pad for your back, get someone to massage it then stretch like core then workout (cable or resistance band) start very low and stay there And Use a yoga ball as well and try and to get a epidural shot

I want to go swiming because my doctor and also my parents (who also have herniated disk)said that swiming was really helpfull.So i am going to swim next week i hope,it will effect me. I am eating healthy,i sleep well, walk every day (like 10k steps per day) So as i said i want to got over herniated disk and back pain.

Swimming is great for building core strength. Technique is the most important thing in swimming. Get a good coach if you don't know how to properly swim.
