I have had so much disinformation being brought into my lessons by typical golf addicts concerning artificially trying to add lag or wrist hinge, etc. as of late, and I've never seen so many golfers 100% unable to release the club or square the face in my life. Thanks for pointing this out, Peter.

Lifting my left heel at the start of my backswing was the key to stop me swaying backwards and fatting my irons. So glad to hear it's not the worst thing ever.

Great Stuff Peter. In general, I love how you take into consideration how the general public might interpret information. Nobody articulates concepts in the same way. Especially in golf.

If you happen to physically blessed enough to keep the left arm straight without purposeful manipulation or tension, you’re one of the lucky few. It will mean consistency because the radius of your swing doesn’t change. But if you aren’t, and you try to force it as Pete says, you’ll hit the ball short and crooked. It will look awkward and feel awkward. Corey Conners is one of the best ball strikers in the world with a bent left arm. This is one of those things in golf that you have to just accept your physical limitations. I have had some success getting it a bit straighter by focusing on getting width feeling like it is being driven by my trail hand. But if I actually try to force my left arm totally straight, my 3 hcp would be 13 (or higher) in a flash. I can’t hit decent shots doing it. Great video, Mr. Finch.

For externally rotating the trail shoulder, I like the waiter drill - moving the right hand into a position where I'm holding an imaginary tray of drinks at the top. Then holding the right hand in that position and rotating the body is a great way of getting the feel of squaring the club face by rotating the body. No arm movement. Obviously I'm pro level now... 🙄 Love the hat by the way, been saying I need one ages 🤠

Love this video Mr Finch! Last one was the one that killed my swing for ages. "Fire the hips, fire the hips!" is what we're told every 2 seconds. Turns out years of playing football, tennis and all sorts of other sports means i'm still reasonably athletic in my 40s! Firing those hips meant that the club got stuck behind, didn't get the speed I could generate and all my shots were blocked off to the right into the next county because I couldn't swing my arms fast enough. As soon as I learned to slow them down and actually swing - compressed, fizzy draw shots for days! I now don't even think about my hips - let them react how they will.

The straight arm myth I’m been trapped in seen I start playing golf…but lately (since 3 mounts back) I’m been flexing my arm or rathe don’t think about to have a straight lead arm. That made my swing so much smoother. And also gaining 10-20 % more distance in my shoots. Thanks for pointing that out…that means I’m on the right direction Pete

It might just be a personal thing but I find I can control where the club face is better when I keep my lead arm more straight. I think I’ll work on letting it relax a bit more and work on what my hands are doing

Most of the best ball strikers *look* like they're creating that "lag angle" only because of the camera angle. If you examine the swings of tour pros you'll notice that they try to get their left wrist into an "ulner" position as soon as possible, as that is the position of their wrist at impact. As the downswing takes less than a second, the sooner the wrists are "in ulner," the better.

The straight arm thing is a good one. Look at Ryan Fox's left arm at the top of the swing, it's got a very noticeable bend in it.

i don't really try to create lag but instead try and create a 90 degree angle through the downswing, is this still incorrect? i've improved my ball striking using this because i have a really bad early extension issue.

The opposite is casting. Hold a golf club at the top of your backswing and extend only your arms behind you without turning (The opposite of what should happen). It looks like you are casting a line from a fishing pole. Now do the opposite. Try to keep the arms held back until the very last second. If done "correctly", the club will get trapped behind you as Peter showed. Also not good. The sequence is weight/hip/chest/arms but it can be thrown off by this extreme movement, causing an over-rotation in the chest (pull) or an early extension of the arms (massive loss of power/strike usually resulting in a fat). The magic point is in-between those two extremes with a good rotation.

Hmmm...I hate you teaching the folding/soft arm is okay, Peter: the problem that I see that you don't here is that it actively shortens the length of the club's arc by not keeping the lead arm straight: all I ever see from golfers trying to gain more ROM and backswing length is they "let the chain go slack" and they've actually lost energy by adding the elbow hinge. I disagree here at 5:35 Pete.
@mrbuddyro-robloxmore
@mrbuddyro-robloxmore 9 ай бұрын
the way you're putting this the only power in the golf swing comes from the arms, which is very untrue. the arms are simply an extension of the feet, legs, hips, and shoulders which all offer some power of their own. when the lead arm is completely straight none of that other power is even really able to work because there's so much tension and everything is gonna get stuck. and on the topic of shortening the arc, it's only by like an inch or 2 and you'll get that back easily + more by having more freedom for your other body parts to work.
@jaxongolf

@@mrbuddyro-robloxmore hang on: when did I EVER say the only power in the golf swing comes from the arms?!? I read the rest and your point about the power getting stuck makes no sense whatsoever. Sorry pal, you lost me.

@@mrbuddyro-robloxmore kzbin.info/www/bejne/nqq2faWtqJaWlcUsi=-6JnMIhOb6sACr1j Watch this example if you get a minute: the entire focus of this lesson taught by Cameron McComrmick speaks to this point, as we see this student who has tried to create more length in the backswing but only managed to create an inconsistent arc. Hope this helps.

...so, finally, this KZbin lesson is going to get chalked up to all the confusing kerfuffle most viewers can't interpret, since it has too many info point presented without any lesson context or a specific individual receiving the instruction. Pete, I'm afraid the whole goal of Swing Quest for "quick lessons" is at the heart of all the golfers who watch KZbin for their instructional improvement yet fail time and again because their education in golf looks similar to pin the tail on the donkey: there might be a very useful tidbit of info written on each tail, but the individual blindly attaching that info to haphazard parts of their swing when it might not even be a teaching point that applies to them...and here we are looking at a bunch of very confused and frustrated amateur golfers. It simply begs the question, Pete: are the viewers now better off having watched this, or just now more confused about who to trust and who not to trust??
