Things are very different than when Nintendo launched Switch. There are many competitors with same form factor and Nintendo knows they need a powerful hardware so they can keep supporting it for another LONG cycle. They just can’t get away with a “slight” hardware bump the form factor novelty is over and they definitely need something on par with Series S.which is possible.

Plus Nintendo will want to make it affordable to the consumer. They have proved countless times they don't need a powerful system to sell consoles. They will know that the switch did run 3rd party albeit not that great but good enough. Nintendo probably are looking at how they can bring a switch console predecessor that can run new 3rd party games without the need to be as powerful as ps5 or xbox series. To me a lot of 3rd party games today look like they could be on ps4 and not ps5. Nintendo could easily bring out a switch 2 with the power of xbox one x and have no problems running new games. Remember we had some games running better on the xbox One x than the xbox series s. Also the switch was mainly used as a handheld console. Some I know have never docked there's to their tv. The switch was really just a handheld only device that in a way, replaced their handheld consoles more than it replaced the Wii U as that was a failure. So I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo didn't bother with a docking station meaning they would need the necessary power to run their games in 4k resolution. Like I said. They could make a xbox one x or ps4 pro and just have a nice big oled 1080p screen. Nintendo gamers don't care about 4k or big tv gaming. They can get that from xbox or playstation. And it needs to be affordable for their target audience.

If the new Nintendo console is somewhat comparable in power again, that would be tremendously exciting. Especially if it maintained the hybrid handheld thing. My guess for their next gimmick, is expanding on the hybrid nature by having it TV/Handheld but also enabling VR by sliding it into a headset peripheral where the camera and the gyro joycons do the tracking. I could definitely see it. And there are new rumors of them getting back into VR. I think it would fit. Especially when you think about the fact they've done 3D screens with the 3DS

@Jeff1N
@Jeff1N Жыл бұрын
Worth noting, Steam Deck is able to run The Matrix demo. Not super well, but at lower resolution and settings it's playable. Switch 2 will at least be more power efficient than the Deck, and this time it seems to be using custom built hardware by NVidia (rather than the general purpose Tegra X1) so I wouldn't be surprised if if it was indeed more powerful and could run the demo on decent settings and stable 30fps at 720p. Add the magic of DLSS to upscale that to 1440p and you already get the demo looking similar to what it does on Xbox Series S. Portable mode could have a 1080p screen and still look good with a 540p internal resolution, specially because the small screen could help hide upscaling artifacts

Series S and Switch 2 should piggyback off each other for lower floor level optimization. The PS5 would be an issue though due to now bring the system with least hardware based features. they are pandering to the mobile gaming platform, they not trying to be a triple A competitor to Microsoft and Sony... they are offering a triple a experience to tablets and smartphones. the Japanese culture is in full motion and always on the go, they dont have time to sit at home and play console games 4 to 8 hours straight. the only time they mostly play is when waiting and traveling. you walk into a tech shop and you will see a variety of cheap handheld gaming devices too playing older games. Personally I think Nvidia is definitely the one to provide the best possible chip with good efficiency for a handheld and cost effective. If they can figure out a way to harness the switch 2 Dock to provide extra cooling, for example, when you dock it pushes a lot more air through an inlet under the switch 2 than they can really increase the chips power making both handheld and TV experience amazing. And as for price, I think the next switch can easily be priced as high as the PS5 and Series X which would allow the performance budget to go alot higher if you compare it todays Switch prices

Nvidia has never come close to Apple in efficiency at low power. This is common sense. Apple's bread and butter is 7w TDP. So they are going to get very good at building for low wattage. nVidia's bread and butter is 700w machines. So they'll get very good at building for high wattage. BUT, nVidia has some amazingly competent engineers, and given enough time to iterate on their low wattage offerings, we'll see better and better results. Everybody benefits from more competitive markets. I am really looking forward to seeing what they put together.

The T234 is 4Tflops at max power, T239 has 75% of the core count, and as well as that, most likely wont be running at max boost clocks as well, leaving it at 768 mhz, or roughly 3/4 of that. I'd say, unless the dock does something major for applying additional cooling, and Nintendo typically being conservative for things like heat etc, we'd probably only see it hit a bit over half that. I'm thinking around 2.3 Tflops of performance. It's also 8nm so it will probably run quite hot in the form factor at full power.

I don't think it would hit the raw power of the Series S, but will probably rely a lot on DLSS and 3, and maybe some other magic we haven't seen quite yet that well in the PC space. Low internal resolutions with good upsampling implementation and frame gen is my bet but not sure exactly how they might get around input latency.. maybe enhance nvidia reflex that integrates into frame gen as well? I expect Nvidia might be going all out on trying new things, considering the Switch's success to do something on a low foot print that would be harder to break into on existing ecosystems like PC. Also wondering on the possibility of docked 4k output, but possibly lower internal res, dlss to 1080p or 1440p with checkerboard or temporal reconstruction to 4k as well, even lower handheld, but just DLSS to 720p or 1080p. I think given Nvidia's direction there could be some pretty cool possibilities enhancing existing tech in a closed ecosystem. I'd say the hardware is already locked in, and given the state of current mobile chips, it might possibly hit from 1 - 3 ( suspect around 1.4 tflops for handheld and around 2.3 for docked ) Tflops of raw performance from handheld to docked etc, but will utilise these techniques to help bridge that gap. Even then there would definitely still be compromises in some visual fidelity. I wonder if AI could also be used with frame gen, maybe frame enhance to artificially up settings such as shadows, textures etc as well, so it's really rendering at lowest presets but can make it look equivalent to ultra presets. I suspect for things like that the tensor load would probably too high for what would be currently feasible however considering the lower power draw requirements but fun to think of. Ultimately it wont hit Series S, but better upscaling, some possible limited AI, realistically wouldn't expect more than 60 tensor cores which would limit what it could push in terms of anything but DLSS, even frame gen probably out, and maybe even a 720p handheld res tartget again are a possibility. Also wonder if the dock might contain some cheaky tensor cores for more AI driven upsampling from that point as well. What happens when you upsample a DLSS image with another DLSS... DLSS to 1080p, then the dock does that to 4k haha.

I dunno can carry and play it around without a TV? same with Switch. There are limits in mobile hardware and other limits on top of that to actually keep the cost down. Nintendo aren't going to release something as expensive as the Rog Ally or Steam deck etc. I'd say portable mode would hit around steam deck levels at least, and more for dock, and $299 - $349 USD. A lot of this is just based on rumors and information, if it matches the T234 on cuda count etc, not using the assumed 1536 then it would still be decently close to the series S then. But TPD might be too high with just that chip and the likely goals for Nintendo, henced the more modified T239 based one as rumoured with cut cores. A full powered T234 at max clocks which likely wont happens and full 2048 cuda cores is just about on par with the series S, so it might be possible but unlikely. @@oilerguy5494

@AtilasRises tflops aren't a magic number I agree. But give an indication of compute that can be compared to known performance level on similar architecture like ampere which is well known. There are a bunch of other things that aren't clear in leaks that would make it possible. I've also tested the scenario out at those resolutions on PC. First the most part it works fine. 1080p dlss ultra performance is 360p internal. Does it look as good as native. No. Is it something that could be classified as comparable. Yes. Look at digital foundry testing ultra performance at 1080p for Control for instance. Will something running a 2ish tflop ampere chip be able to run something at 360p that series S might do a 720p. Possibly unless there are some other bottleneck restricting it. But from a pure compute perspective it's achievable. EDIT: YOu can also check the DF video on DLSS ultra performance at 1080p they did with the control DLSS 2.1 update to show such "unreasonable" resolutions are doable. Also some Switch games drop as low as 360p. Not saying every game will run that low, but it's a possibility. Matrix awakens on series S runs as low as 533p internally.

To those who say Nintendo was never about graphics, they clearly don't know Nintendo. The entire marketing campaign for N64 was around its graphics (they even made the 64-bit part of the name itself - no other console maker has done that), the GameCube was almost on par with Xbox, SNES was wiping the floor with Mega Drive in terms of simultaneous colours on screen. They HAD to differentiate and compete on different terms after the failure of GC almost got them out of the console business, hence the gimmicks were born. Now that they've had a hit with the Switch and their brand reputation has been restored, I wouldn't be surprised if they get back on the graphics race. Besides, if the Switch 2 presents no new ways to play (which has been their mantra as of late), the only thing they can do is to seriously beef up the specs.

Surely Nintendo and Nvidia are aware of the power consumption requirements of the hardware they're working with, but the Switch 2 has to have better battery longevity than a UMPC like the Deck. Logistically, why couldn't the Switch 2 have hardware to run games at the native resolution of the built in screen (720p or what have you) while the home dock contains a bespoke GPU meant specifically for DLSS and upscaling to TV's and home theater setups? Something akin to Microsoft's Surface Book with the GPU in the keyboard base.

A couple of potential factors, some pretty plausible, but if i had to make an assumption, a 4070 comparable gpu in the dock, an nvidia Apu in the handheld that can do some "cinematic framerate" upscaled ray tracing...for 2 hours. lol The steamdeck can technically do raytracing and If it wasnt an amd machine, it might even do it pretty well. I think because nintendo wont be abandoning the hybrid market, they will probably do the EGPU. I am totally willing to be wrong about that, but i think it has potential to be the first instance of an EGPU in a major commerical product. potentially normalizing the technology. But hey, maybe they believe that the apu will be enough. Im sure it will be impressive, but i dont think it will be very impressive when docked. Nintendo doesnt believe that it has to compete, it just needs to catch up and provide the experience its known for, but i think they came close to death one too many times for them to cheap out. I think they will sell the machine at a loss, and be forced to acknowledge the threat of the brand new handheld market.

In some cases even ultra performance DLSS to 1080p can still look fairly respectable, so 4k 4x scaling factor should be some what reasonable as well, considering the form factor. Might even focus 1080 or 1440p internal and the dock utilises the Nvidia shields AI upscaling technology for video output there. It's the T239 as Richard suggested. Ampere is very good at RT. Nintendo would be stupid to release a console with no dedicaded RT hardware, future games will be be RT only.

I can't remember if the ps2 or ps3, but one or the other was supposedly capable of running ballistic missile guidance systems and the other was apparently capable of rendering toy story one in real time. I miss the day of brand new architectures when we could go on such flights of fancy. ARM, as Apple has proven, is flexible enough that it gives us a chance to at least possibly be surprised. As for gimmicks? Maybe it reads your heart rate and blood pressure and adjusts the gameplay to that.. Somebody had that idea once

The missile myth was for the ps2. It was absolute bs, of course. Just a way for boomers to be outraged about what the kids were doing.

@user-gf3nq6eb7o For physical gamers yes but not for Nintendo. They've been focusing on digital for years. If they're using an SSD you'll likely have to download everything to the internal storage anyway.

I won’t be surprised if the Switch 2 has ray tracing capability given how standard that is, but whether games will use it given the performance penalty we see on consumer GPUs.

I dont think a series s level handheld is possible right now. Especially from nintendo. I dont even think a mobile chip that powerful exists yet.

Still very good as they will only have to upscale to 1080P using DLSS in handheld mode.

The switch is my favourite console, but my view on its games are they run good enough and being a retro game fan it has more than enough juice to run them, so a more powerful switch wouldn't be a selling point for me, I would be more interested in a full super nintendo catalogue and bigger more durable controlls.

We are in a age where phones and soon handhelds can run AAA games at ease if Apple is to be believed to crack the jackpot on their Iphone achievement. This could change the entire gaming industry in smaller mobile devices running AAA games..

People seem to have short term memory loss ever time Nintendo goes to launch new hardware. Nintendo always goes the other way when it comes to hardware, cheap and off the shelf. There is no way Nintendo will use anything custom\powerful when Nvidia has years old chips that will do the job (orin was announced in 2018). Almost guaranteed Nintendo will choose the Tegra orin built on Samsung 8nm as to keep it off tsmc. Nvidia won't want to burn up fab capacity on 5nm for obvious reasons. Samsung will give Nvidia a deal again on 8nm just like they did on ampere. The orin has 2048 cuda cores of ampere which is basically the same as a rtx 2050 and might trade blows with the old rtx 2060 but due to lower power it won't. I'm sure Nvidia can get diss 3.5 running on it. It would have enough grunt to run games at 1080p 60 and then just upscale the scrap out of them. Nintendo will want to keep the power budget not much higher than the current switch which I believe is around 15 watts. This way they can keep a low capacity battery to cut costs, and they won't need much cooling. It will also keep the next switch thin like the current one. It would be nice if I am wrong....but with the past history of Nintendo and the fact they love to make fat profit off their hardware from day one tells me this is the direction they will likely go.

the switch 2 wont even be as powerful as the ps4... its a mobile tablet cheap hardware and battery life is their biggest priority selling it at a profit never at a loss and no mobile device, tablet can perform at a ps4 level...
