I was raised in the south too. I had a cousin who had a bypass in his 40's. Several relatives died in their 50's. Diabetes, obesity, CVD, HTN, abdominal aneurysms and psychiatric issues including alcoholism & personality disorders are rampant. Yet, when they go out to eat they still order fried fish & fried potatoes!

It sounds like chuck’s weight loss surgery team was a poor one. I had gastric bypass. I was required to have 6 months of nutrition classes, take quizzes, have monthly weigh ins, turn in nutrition questionnaires every month, and have a myriad of physical tests. Plus a psychological evaluation. That was all before I was cleared for surgery. After surgery I’ve had regular dr visits and bloodwork. I continue to talk with my dietician about my food choices. Having a really good bariatric team supporting you is vital for your success.

Awesome podcast! Chuck's story is so inspiring. I knew Chuck had lost a lot of weight because I listen to all the podcast he puts out for PCRM, but I didn't know anything else. This podcast has opened my eyes to so many things and helped me out with my own food addition behaviors. I'm not overweight and eat a really healthy vegan diet most of the time, but I eat way beyond the full mark a lot of the time. What Chuck had to say about that was very helpful for me.

I do as well. I do it due to anxiety, boredom, or dysthymia. I try other measures as well to curb those feelings.

I'm the same way. I was aware of my addictive personality at a young age, and that's why I don't drink alcohol or experiment with drugs. I can't have anything in moderation, especially if it tastes good. I've tried alcohol twice, and I feel insanely lucky that it wasn't "the good kind".

I don't have addiction issues, but I have OCD due to my background. I can't throw food out unless it's spoiled. I have to eat everything in the refridgerator, everything on my plate, etc. The blond lady is correct, eating habits affect our personality. My husband was a horribly nasty person. He ate junk from the time he workup until he went to bed. He died at 48 of a heart attack and was a very bitter, angry man.

Great POD cast. Very inspiring. Even for someone that has been following this lifestyle for some time. I listen to the PCRM POD cast regularly, but not before Switch4Good 🙂. 🌱💪✌️

Awesome podcast! Very inspiring! I agree food addiction is real! Many folks are not successful with "dieting"/improving health because they fail to accept/recognize their own food addictions.

Something about gastric bypass feels like a cheat.

in order to save a life it can be necessary - BUT it is essential that the person undergoing this becomes educated about their relationship with food.

He gained the weight back after the surgery then used a plant-based diet and walking to lose it again and keep it off.

@@cazy314 really? Does he say this?

@@cazy314 I have watched that happen over & over again. If the person hasn’t gotten control of their food addiction - they will ALWAYS go back to their disordered eating.

His journey is very inspiring. There are many people who've had gastric bypass surgery and lost a lot of weight only to regain some, most, or all of it later. Gastric bypass surgery is not a cheat code. I, too, thought it was the "easy way out." I actually tried to gain weight in order to qualify for it since I seemed to be able to gain weight so easily but had a very hard time losing it. The surgery is just a tool he used, and the fact that he has kept it off for so long is incredible. 👏🏾 He changed his relationship with food and now uses his knowledge and experience to help others do the same, myself included. After finding the Exam Room Podcast, I have been able to put my ulcerative colitis into remission, reduce my cholesterol, and have lost 85 pounds. His story is VERY inspiring.

Absolutely agree , I know few people had it and it's so much easier to lose the weight as your stomach it is cut ✂️ well it is cheating.
