Sony is definitely leading the industry in terms of consistent performance. i think that's the main reason people switch, they can depend on the camera to be predictable and reliable. Personally i shoot Fuji and although i'm just getting my feet wet with filmmaking, i can already see how using a more dependable system will allow me to worry less about what the camera is doing and focus more on getting my composition, angles, movements, etc.

Really killer video! Fellow AOD'er here! I'm one of those who is still on the Canon side. I've been shooting stills on Canon for the last 20+ years and I'm heavily invested in Canon glass. While I'm very green to the film side (currently using the R5 and R5C), one thing I don't hear many folks talk about much is related to the working professionals need to get broken equipment fixed fast. I've been a Platinum CPS member for as long as I can remember and despite the yearly membership fee of $300, I continue to be impressed with how fast the turn around is for anything I send in for repair. I can shoot a wedding on a Saturday and break a LCD or get the camera swamped by a wave during portraits at the beach, overnight the camera to CPS on Monday, and have the camera repaired and back to me by Thursday. And if that isn't possible, I get a free loaner. All this being said, yeah, the Sony side is very enticing in many respects.

Sony pro support is great as well. A few months back I got debris on the sensor of my A1 that I was unable to clean with multiple swabs (still don’t know what it was). Sony paid for overnight shipping to their repair facility in LA, it took about a day to successfully clean, and it was back in my hands the next. It cost me zero.

We’re solely Fx3 dependent for all of our work. Great pieces of equipment, they take a bunch of hassle away with their user friendly attributes. Tally lights, fan, and dual iso were the main reasons. We own 3 of them now and shoot all of our corporate, wedding and docu-style content with them. I think the versatility and quickness to use sets them apart.

That's a great video! I use the Canon C70 and it is a great camera, especially with the DGO sensor. Great Battery Life. Very versatile and built with everything in it so you can shoot in multiple situations. Working in a camera store before, I do understand people going to Sony, especially the FX Cinema Line which I do respect a lot. It has one mount and they are lots of lens options from different third party lenses, which is a no brainer for camera rentals. The C70, however, won't be the camera in demand to rent.(Especially where I'm from in Montreal, Canada) I would say that as a filmmaker I truly believe that you can create great quality content with any camera coming out today in the market (around last 6-7 years). In my opinion (and most creators know this), the biggest factor when filming would be lighting. If we talk about controlled environments such in a studio or if you have the ability and the time to bring and setup your lighting, any of these new cameras would work just fine to create any type of content. If you have to film in a run and gun situation in a very low light environment (Weddings for example), Sony is the best option in my opinion. Being honest, if someone is coming in my camera store and tells me he wants to invest in the first time in filmmaking in 2022 and has the budget to start strong, I would suggest to start with the Sony FX Line. (Even if in my heart I'm a Canon user) Of course there are so many other factors to consider. If someone is already in the Canon EF ecosystem, the C70 and the R5C are very good options. But price can be a crucial factor with these two options. Personally I don't think the switch is inevitable towards Sony, but they might have an advantage for the years to come if they do keep going in the right direction (which I think they do). There are so many options and ways to get to the job done at the end of the day. Again thanks for making this great video! Help me to think better about the Sony and Canon debate.

I switched from aps-c Canon DSLRs to Sony e-mount ecosystem 8 years ago. It was hard. All the cool kids had canons or nikons and there were almost no e-mount lens, all their lens were initially aps-c. But the mirrorless system with their electronic viewfinders, fast autofocus and the ability to use adaptors to fit any lens made me fall in love with it. Years have passed and sony's effort to explore new possibilities and to bet something new has paid off. Of course they had to do a lot of mistakes on the road and today looks like Canon is arriving late and has to start that path and fall into those mistakes that Sony started all those years ago.

I often use two c70s that belong to an agency that I work with. They also have the new c300 m3. And I still prefer my FX6 due to lenses like the Tamron 28-75g2 and Sony 35mm f1.8. I also own Sony MI accessory that allows me to use Sony wireless mics without cables. Idk the C70 has nice image but is clunky AF especially when I need to put it on a gimbal.

I guess it’s like me refusing to buy an iPhone (even though I’m a Mac and iPad user) for years because I didn’t like their built in redundancy and especially the screens that would crack if you so much as looked at them in a certain way!! But my Oneplus 7 pro is getting on a bit now (and was arguably the last true OnePlus phone) and iPhones have noticeably improved the features that put me off so I now own an iPhone 14 pro max . . . . Great video. Shooting on Sony, RED, Blackmagic and now recently Canon as well, I'm completely brand agnostic. These are tools, and as such it doesn't matter which name is stamped on to them. Having said that, I am contemplating a wholesale shift to Canon. I will probably continue to shoot Sony stills with the A1 for my real estate/interiors work as there are useful capabilities the A1 has that really no other camera does, like 1/400 flash synch and a super strong internal wifi radio for ipad tethering. For video work though, I LOVE shooting Komodo as my main camera, and in my experience, it is way easier to cut canon footage to the R3D files than any flavor coming out of Sony. The RED and Canon color science is much more similar....and as a bonus, they use the same lens mount as each other.

@@flexpression Depth, texture, latitude, the sensor it’s self. If what you’re used to working with is 10 bit Sony files, RED raws in the IPP2 engine will wake you up in a hurry. Have an open mind. If 10 bit Sony is all that matters, why isn’t every motion professional just shooting on Sony and calling it a day? Grading can get you close, but it can’t replicate the look of an entirely different sensor, especially a 16bit global shutter one like Komodo.

yea i plan on getting the fx6 and ditching canon. Someone else mentioned how sony cameras are more compatible with one another then canon so its easier to swap lenses, match etc. You just get more bang for your buck with sony right now also.

Yes, Sony users are ubiquitous and proud. I still prefer the image from Canon and Lumix for sure. Their (Lumix/Canon/BM) usability and features are great if were talking about the upper end. What's made Sony so popular is the fact that their lower end cameras are so similar (mounts/features/buttons) to their upper end cameras. They made it so easy to start and and advance to the higher levels. It's like the iPhone of cameras. Now because so many people are using them, whenever you're shooting content for other people, Sony is really the lowest common denominator. It's really the most compelling argument for Sony as far as I'm concerned. The other things like low light and AF that people talk about in favor of Sony are easily debunked or made negligible in practical application. But yes, "everyone" is shooting Sony (for better or worse) and that's what makes it compelling.

Well...crap...I've been debating this for 3 years. I only shoot canon but it's kept me up at night watching Sony become what Canon used to be. Canon was the pioneer with autofocus, c-log, and etc. Now it seems intentional with the cripple hammer. 🙃 Sony's Fx6 rivals Canon C500 markii and you could get 2 Fx6 bodies for that price. 😭 It's tough. I really wish the Fx6 had a global shutter.
