Seeing how often David mentioned the "effectiveness" of hitting metal armor with a blade, I'd like to see his thoughts on "Exanima." It has many combat features around locational armor, bladed/blunt types of defensive/offensive approaches. The game might have an unwieldy control style but it allows the player to more or less engage in "advanced" combat. (it's just a silly physics based dungeon crawler. That being said it really does have the involved mechanics mentioned above.)

Like said in first video tho, armour isn’t realistic at all in ER, like slashing attacks should do nothing to mail/plate armours. Now I wish FROM would hire an expert haha, imagine how cool be in a sequel to have armour be more than just fashion/stat block, ie war picks etc have utility purpose to help break stance of heavily armoured foes, could be good, could be terrible for gameplay and why FROM doesnt do that too though xD

I’d love to hear their thoughts on elden rings armor, I noticed while playing a lot of the sets are jousting armor so there’s no armor plating on the back thighs so the wearer can ride a horse.
@Specter_11252 жыл бұрын
That’s not necessarily jousting armor. Some of the armor is, because they have the jousting shields, but the leg armor doesn’t necessarily mean it is. Jousting is specifically a sport/training. You are right that the opening on the back of the legs makes it easier to ride a horse.
@colbunkmust2 жыл бұрын
Pretty much all cavalry armor doesn't have armor on the back of the thighs. Most leg armor seen on the battlefield didn't included fully enclosed cuisse, and the only surviving pieces are for tournament foot-combat armor
@twosheds71052 жыл бұрын

I've seen the overhead helicopter-of-death type thing referenced in group combat context where you'd be hidden behind a row of shields so you're free to snipe at your opponents with something like a longer polearm. It's also worth mentioning that people tend to assume that battle axes are similar to fire axes or felling axes when in reality, the blades are actually very thin, so they're really a lot less weighty than you'd expect. The dual shields reminded me of a quote from Fiore (famous historical longsword master); "offense without defense is foolish, but defense without offense is suicide", although to be fair, many historical treatises do stress the fact that you can - and should - hit people with your shield.

The whole "poke from behind a shield" tactic is frowned upon as a cheap/cheesy tactic by many Elden Ring players, and the funny thing is that's also one of the most viable fighting methods in the game as it translates to real life, because in reality, you would almost ALWAYS try to keep your shield up while attacking, whether it be with a thrusting weapon, or swinging a sword, or an axe, or a mace. In real life, fighters would keep their shield up as much as possible, but video games tend to balance things out by making you drop your guard to attack with most weapons (just look at how Link traditionally throws his shield to the side when attacking with his sword, for example.)

I think the element of the player character having super human strength plays a factor into atleast some of why you use weapons how you do in Elden Ring. For example, the enormous Berserk-reference Greatsword requires 31 strength to wield and the description says it requires "inhuman strength use effectively" or something along those lines. So once you've invested just 31 points into Strength your character is already super humanly strong, and all stats max out at 99.

While a lot of his ideas for weapon move sets are great, I think the biggest issue is implementation, and the time it would take to make them. His point about taking unique weapons into account is something Bloodborne does really well, but it becomes a problem when in Elden Ring you have HUNDREDS of weapons. Another problem is that even if it was realistic to make semi-unique move sets for every weapon, how would you implement it in the way he’s talking about it? Would you integrate it into the normal moveset, or have combos that you have to perform by imputing specific buttons?
