The "Jaws" sound comes whenever the enemies move I think... and the closer to winning you get, the more often the enemies move too. If you get the sword you get to the point that the enemies all move with every one of your moves.

Somehow, this simple game looks very enjoyable. There's an elegance to it. Wish I had had it back in the day.

A lot of the sluggishness is down to Fargoal being in BASIC - so there's no (IIRC) trickery being done to help speed things up during input processing or level generation. It can get seriously bogged down when you get further in with enemy moves - and for me it kind of gets in the way of enjoying longer sessions (as sadly there is no save feature).
@Pixelmusement2 ай бұрын
The lack of a save feature kinda makes me think back to Dragon Crystal on the Master System and Game Gear; REALLY fun dungeon crawl but severely hampered by a lack of saves or even passwords due to how long it is. :P

I had a corrupted copy of the game - the character set file was broken. I was able to recreate the character set for it. But as part of it, I figured out how to list the program out. (BASIC start pointer was moved to hide the program.)

OMFG I had this game, but the disk was corrupted. I ended up rebuilding the character set and got the game working again.

I played a fan-made remake of Sword of Fargoal (that by now is as old as the the original game was when the remake was released) a long time ago (in fact, this is the first time I see the original game). It's pretty faithful but has several features that make it more pleasant to play (for instance, it shows all your stats, items and spells at any time and of course, it has as save feature). Apparently, it still works on modern systems. Looking for it could be slightly tricky, though, since there's an official remake for iPhones. Sword of Fargoal is a very simple game, but as a casual roguelike, it's actually quite fun. At least, I enjoyed playing that fan remake back in the day.

Having never seen _Sword of Fargoal_ before, I'm not keen about how little is revealed as your character takes a step. (7:35) 7-11 is featured in the _$25,000 Pyramid._

I love all your videos, but I think a problem with the NNRG videos is that nostalgia is a big part of why I like your channel. We'll see what you come up with next!
@Pixelmusement2 ай бұрын
You say that, but I've gone through just about every game I grew up with by this point on ADG so even there I'm not working with Nostalgia Goggles on anymore. By this point, the only nostalgia left really is that of the viewers. :P

7:28 Funny thing, you also had 616 experience, which is considered the number of the beast in some early manuscripts of the Bible. So you basically had it twice!

Is there any significance to 711 being 45 higher than the beast? ;P
@Pixelmusement2 ай бұрын
...wholly crap yes... I just thought about it and 45 is 9 times 5, whereby the average person works a 9 to 5 job every day... o_o;

If you were going to be slain in a temple, it makes sense that it would be by a monk. :P More seriously, while this game is a bit too simple for my tastes, for what it is it looks to be pretty good! ^_^ (Although I'd want more tiles revealed per move than it currently does, I feel.)

@@Pixelmusement Ah, I see! Fair enough--although I'd prefer that it weren't locked behind a spell! :P Speaking of which, the tension introduced by having spells and traps look the same is an interesting feature: "Is the gamble worth it? Is a new spell worth more than whatever hit points I might lose...?"

Rogue predates this game by at least 2 years. At least, because nobody is quite sure exactly when the first version of Rogue was actually created since it was just spread around UCSC before making its way to the public at large.
