This may look ancient now, but when I was a young kid I would watch my best friend's older brothers play this game and Phantasy Star II. To us, these games looked so advanced and futuristic that they fascinated us; especially Phantasy Star II. It's hard to believe now, but it's true. Before the SNES, the Genesis was cutting edge. I guess you had to be there to fully grasp how awesome the Genesis was at that point. I'll always have fond memories of Sword of Vermilion because it reminds me of the early days of 16-bit video game wonder. What a time to be a gamer.

You couldn't have stated it any better; for that first few months after the Genesis release almost every game that was produced felt like a new horizon in that moment. With the Genesis and also Turbografx simultaneously introducing us to next generation visuals, sound, and scope as you indicated it was a golden age.

@Shining Phantasy Thanks! You're exactly right too. The early days of the Genesis were magical. We viewed it as a space age machine. The awesome black Altered Beast box it came in and it's sleek design made it seem even cooler. The only other times I've felt so fascinated by technology were the early days of the internet and the first time I played a video game/deathmatch with friends over a modem. For me, nothing else today can compare.

Wow, thanks for this! I played this to the end when it was new and have never forgotten it. It has been amazing to see it again. I played every day and one day while walking home in broad daylight on a summers evening I turned suddenly and swung my imaginary sword at an enemy that wasn't there. It may look very old now but at the time it created a another reality for me and I slipped into it unintentionally that day. Great times!

I used to love watching my oldest brother play this when I was a kid. I hung onto all the old games, system, etc. and still have this with the original box. I remember trying to play as a kid (when he wasn't looking - I knew not to save over his file!) and it kicked my butt. His save file is still on there from like 30 years ago! I don't think he ever beat it, but it was always great to watch and I think fed my love of RPGs today.

I used to rage so hard at those old school RPGs because every 2-3 steps I took, an enemy would show up. Especially annoying when I was inside one of those mazes; it always ended up breaking my concentrarion. Also, I never managed to collect the Sword of Vermillion. I thought it was tucked away in some dungeon I missed or something. Took me all these years and this video to solve the mystery lol

Yeah, Kawaguchi apparently rewrote Sega's sound driver to improve the digital sample quality for this game. They did Rent a Hero after this one and you can definitely hear it in that one's soundtrack. That intro with the orchestra hits and the lightning was total showboating, and it was great.

I'm very, very late to answer this, but it's the place where you find the Crimson Armour, a unique piece of equipment that heals you with every step you take on the overworld. If memory serves, you need to do the Dragon Shield quest but then IMMEDIATELY talk to the person in Stow after giving them the letter, before returning to the original quest giver. They'll tell you about the armour then. If you don't, it's Lost Forever.

Very first RPG. I still have my game, manual and my original Sega Genesis. Found this on an emulator, but muscle memory made it too hard to play on a keyboard. I'll watch instead. Great game, great graphics (for its time) and score. Loved this game, and it's the number one reason I haven't retired my Sega because I'd have no other way to play it. If I remember, the water on the far right of Deepdale if you 'seek' restores all your lost hit points. Also, at this point when you get the Sangious spell book, I'd hoof it all the way to Malaga and get the town portal. Thank you for uploading!
