The story with the dad taking that dangerous trek to his daughter's wedding makes me so upset. The _only_ reason that story even remotely feels good is because he beat the odds to get there. It so easily could've ended with him dying in that mud, and no wedding is worth finding your dad dead in the dirt. Listening to that story was so frustrating; all I could think about was imagining if my own father made the same decision as Jones, but with less luck. I would infinitely prefer him miss my wedding and stay safe and alive, rather than have him walk out into danger and possibly not make it. I would've been so angry with him taking that risk. As my father's kid, I would vastly prefer he miss the event and be alive every day afterwards than risk everything for one day and maybe never see him again.

Ya, about ten or so years ago I worked at Target. A massive blizzard had blown in and I called out. I was told it would count against me for not coming in. Those that did go got snowed in due to three feet of snow. It gets better though. The next day three feet more was predicted. Target called again and I turned them down because I couldn't even leave my driveway and another blizzard was coming. They got mad and guess what? Three feet of snow! They ended up letting me go citing me not coming in. Major corporations are morally bankrupt.
@SellesionАй бұрын
This for sure. I had a boss guilt me into coming into work when we had a snow storm in my area. Compared to some parts of the country, sure, it wasn't a "lot" of snow. But it was over 10 inches in a city that has no infrastructure for it. There's 2 snow plows for the entire County, and a LOT of very steep hills. Around here, they just close roads rather than plow or salt them. It was so unsafe for me to come in, I wasn't getting paid for the tripled travel time, and customers sure as hell didn't come out. Huricane Helen survivor here. I finally have access to internet from my phone, lost it friday morning and the only places with working internet are places distributing supplies/news stuff. I cannot describe how crazy it is to be on the other side of the screen during something like this... Thank you to everyone here who is leaving positive comments and those criticizing the government for dragging it's feet during this! And to answer those wondering why we weren't more prepared; The smokey mountians normally break up any bad weather coming in. Almost all the weather is created in this area because it's a temperate rainforest. There hasn't been a storm anywhere near this bad in the area for about 100 years. Hurricanes that come this way usually only result in a pretty standard rainstorm/tropical storm equivalent and we never see tornadoes. During Helene we also had 2 tornadoes touch down from what I've heard. So, not only did we not have the infrastructure for this, but our cities are built in valleys between mountians (so a bowl) and to top it off most people didn't expect anything worse than a thunderstorm. The good news is around here we have a lot of people who are campers, farmers, nomads, preppers etc. So a lot of the community is banding together to help survive in any way possible.

I was once forced to come into work during a hurricane. This was at a power plant about ten miles from the gulf coast. It had storm crew measures where people would come in before the storm and stay through it, but that's not what they did. They had us drive into work as the storm was hitting. Yes, you heard that right, while is was making landfall ten miles away. The wind was so strong that I could barely keep my hatchback on the road. The rain we all had to walk through to get to the plant was coming down so hard that it hurt when it hit you. We were all soaked and miserable because the rain went through everything. Those of us who packed dry clothes in trash bags were the only ones half comfortable. Most of the people there couldn't even do anything because of the rain, so there was no point in even being there. Everyone was so pissed that they left at lunch. I had an important job to do, so I walked through an empty, flooded parking lot to get to my car that evening. It was an absolutely disgraceful moment for that site and I'm glad to say they've never done it again. It really shouldn't have taken much for anyone to realize this is unacceptable and dangerous. There's no excuse. When are companies going to learn that they don't own their employees?

The justices in our country have been committing some WILD overreach lately, but claiming a child, who isn't of age for contractual capacity to sign a contract FOR THEMSELVES could sign a contract on behalf of someone else is INSANE. Here's a solution: if a judge makes a ruling that is overturned on the basis of "that's not how the law fucking works" they should have to pass the BAR again or be disbarred. They address this aspect on pages 21-24 of the judgement. I initially thought the same thing as you, but if you read it they go into the weeds taking certain aspects of like 20 different cases quoting some nitty gritty stuff involved with intent, capabilities, agent vs principle, etc. So I don't think it's quite as cut & dry as you or I thought it was, but I know that take won't fit the comments section narrative. In my summary, my takeaway is that the mom trusted the daughter with the phone to act on her behalf, and her daughter acted to the best of her abilities on her behalf, and her mom trusting her daughter to order the food meant she felt her daughter was capable of acting on her behalf, and it makes the age immaterial, interestingly enough. But also, they agreed to arbitration 2 or 3 other times, so it's not super relevant.
@coppercornАй бұрын
@@MrSlowestD16 The other agreed times get iffy too, because neither of those times involved arbitration having to do with injury caused by accident, etc. (basically, their specific case). Only the third time did it include that. That said, I also partially agree with the nitty gritty stuff. If I hand my phone and instruct them to, or give them verbal permission to, order something from the phone, I have to expect that I've accepted responsibility for any terms and conditions that might come with that, even if I didn't read them, or physically press the accept. I've "verbally" accepted by allowing it to happen. Now, if the kid swiped the phone and ordered without my knowledge, that's a different situation, but doesn't sound like that was the case here. All of that aside, what I find unlawful as a citizen, is how the T&C of uber eats can apply to the use of uber ride share. Just like how the T&C of disney+ shouldn't apply to disney parks.

Also worth noting, JD's mom STOLE the fentanyl from the hospital in which she worked. She was the one with access and the one trafficking it illegally, not immigrants.
@nicklibby3784Ай бұрын
Yeah its hypocritical but still...... Medical grade fentanyl is not necessarily the problem, it is much much much more difficult to overdose on compared to the street fent. Fent requires extremely precision in lab by experts & professionals to be safe.....and when cartels or chinese chemists make it, they are not that careful, all it takes is a few extra grains, the size of a grain of sand, into the mix and it is a bad batch that can easily poison people, even those with high tolerances using for decades. So despite what JD said and his argument being hypocritical here, that still does not negate the point he was trying to make: We need to do more to control the influx of fent into this country so that way addicts can have a chance to live, and thus have a chance to get clean and live a happy life and become a productive member of society. BTW, im not a vance supporter. I just don't want people to forget that the real problem is the cartel fent, they account for 99% of what is on the streets, and the cartel fent is the truly dangerous, unregulated, poorly dosed stuff. Thats why Kamala & Walz also support stopping the fentanyl epidemic and doing more, because vances point is correct even though his argument may have been hypocritical. The street fent from cartels is taking aways peoples chances of ever getting clean or recovering because it is a poison that's killing them. Therefore we must do more to stop it. Like Walz said im the debate, he was able to drastically reduce overdoses in Ohio and wants continue that nationwide. Im not sure what Vance has done to stop anything, but Walz has clearly shown he's done something and had success with the issue.

Tennessee resident here from NETN: that company is likely lying by omission. Most companies around here will say "you can stay home if you want, but it'll count as a missed day and you won't get paid for it". That's genuinely terrifying to a lot of people around here. The one I work for, during all the snow and ice we got last year, even refused to give administrative leave to the people who literally couldn't leave their homes with their driveways and such iced over. With how many hills we have, extreme weather is a death sentence to a lot of people living in the hollers and up on the mountains. So yeah, that's my take. 4:56 - Phil, I'm a supply chain manager at a large hospital in the PNW, and even here across the country, this disaster is so devastating that it's not just IV lines that are impacted. Our inventory team is scrambling to secure supplies and pile up inventory to provide the best care possible to people who are 2000 miles away from this terrible event. Close to 50 different products utilized for procedures and care are impacted from that plant getting shut down and other smaller manufacturers. The news is grim on those plants getting back online anytime soon... not to mention that this will not just impact my or other hospitals, but the direct care and response to horror that people are facing on the ground across the south. I'm terrified to have this happen at the same time that another hurricane is poised to strike another section of the US, where these supplies may be needed soon.

I believe he said he did it by tracking his nutrition, weight lifting, and eating in a calorie deficit. I've done it this way too. Google the TDEE calculator (it's free), enter in your info, go to the cut tab. This will tell you what your body needs, both calories and macros goals (I personally always go by the sedentary activity level even though I exercise) to lose a pound of fat a week (you don't want to lose more than that bc you lose muscle mass if you cut calories too hard, wrecking your metabolism bc muscle tissue burns calories). Get a food scale like it says and weigh out and log every bite into an app like MyFitnessPal (also free). Make sure to focus on macros as well as calories, because a low-carb macros split will keep you full due to the high amount of protein needed daily. Full body weight train 2-3x a week. A FitBit-like device is also helpful to make sure you get in your daily steps and give you an idea of how many calories you are actually burning in a day overall. This may seem all overwhelming, it took me awhile to build up to this, so start slow by starting with food tracking and daily steps after that. Joined a gym once I was able to take on more responsibility. 76lbs down and counting...just entered a normal BMI yesterday for the first time in over 15 years. You got this, because I never thought I would, yet here I am! Best of luck to you 🍀

I'm so happy that the dad made it to the wedding and the story had a very happy ending - the tropper who helped, the old friend he met, the chances of that happening at all are so slip, for it to happen when he needed help is just so amazing! Glad he made it on time and managed to walk his daughter! What a story to tell to his grandkids!

Also about the plastics factory, some employees have also stated that even tho they were told to keep working, most of management had already left. Also, I have had managers like this. It’s crazy to me how quickly and easily it is for people to put others lives at risk just for a middle management position. It’s sad and frustrating.

The uber arbitration is on the same scale as the Disney case. It is time to regulate the Industrial Protection Agreements, which is what they are, not a consumer agreement at all. We should always know, companies don't give a fuck about us. We are just dollars.

Once in a decade hurricanes are happening every year now, how much longer are our "Leaders" gonna let this happen
@queenannsrevenge100Ай бұрын
It’s about money. It’s always about money. If someone says it’s not about money, it’s about money. If insurance companies stop covering insurance on ALL HURRICANE DAMAGE and FEMA stopped paying large companies for reimbursements, and companies were fined super heavy fines for employee claims, you’d see change pretty quickly.

the way officials shut down a civilian coming to help during a disaster is a perfect example of why high-control responses to disaster don't work as well as on-the-ground, adaptable and community-based responses do. could you imagine if, on september 11th 2001, boat captains were threatened with arrest?? could you imagine thinking to threaten someone with arrest for helping people???

Zoo volunteer here: I cannot imagine leaving any of the animals I care for to die or telling others not to help them. Those people had a duty of care to their animals, how dare they insist others not help them. Also mad kudos to the dad getting to the wedding, holy shit Var smile upon him and his daughter.
@eisenbergjjАй бұрын
Yeah well, animals at events are considered to be like props. No one except the animal handler cares about its well being and maybe a couple of good natured adults and curious kids. Was at a thanksgiving fair as a kid and they had 6 of the most tired looking ponies I’d ever seen, had to ride one just to get the guy leading it around to tell me what was up. Their ranch owner actually agreed to have them come to an event after they had last week been working as minor labor ponies to haul stuff around the farm for fall harvest and all of those ponies got no rest.

I agree! I have a little parrot and she has a “go” bag right by the door with essentials. Her carrier is there too. I’ve taught her that the fire alarm means “treats and lots of cuddles” so she’s not flying around scared in an emergency. I chose to bring her into my home and my life and it’s my responsibility to keep her safe!

Since when can a daughter legally sign something as her mother when she hasnt been given power of attorney ?
@redbeard5939Ай бұрын
Agency law is a lot broader - and murkier - than just a power of attorney. Have you ever had someone hand you their credit/debit card to make a purchase for them despite not being an authorized user? The made you a temporary agent for that purpose. Every instance will come down to a legal analysis of the relevant state law if someone fights it, but yes - you can generally make pretty much anyone an agent for most transactions.
@SkanMLLАй бұрын
@@redbeard5939 But that applies to an individual transaction rather than an agreement that is legally binding? I suppose that you could say that purchasing an item is a legal transfer of that item thus being a legal agreement, I would just think something contractual like a document would be handled differently.
@redbeard5939Ай бұрын
@@SkanMLL you pretty much hit the nail on the head - pretty much any transaction is a legally binding agreement as far as the fundamentals of contract law are concerned. It's the specific exception to that fundamental rule - and others - that most of the interesting legal disputes revolve around. KZbin comments are not the best place to go on an in depth discussion so everything I am saying has more caveats than the amount of words I am using. Agency law (one person acting for another in some capacity) is very broad and can apply to most transactions as long as a more specific law hasn't overridden it. Power of attorney laws require a more specific authorization in certain kinds of specified transactions (e.g. land transactions - generally transactions that legislatures have identified as having a history of fraud).
@SkanMLLАй бұрын
@@redbeard5939 Gotcha, so basically unless its been ruled that this type of transaction REQUIRES power of attorney its assumed power of attorney is not required.
@redbeard5939Ай бұрын
@@SkanMLL yep, pretty much. There's a lot of room for some other arguments like the daughter wasn't actually authorized or maybe she was too young to act as an agent under the relevant state law; but generally, yes she probably could bind them.
