In 1991, the British Olympic Association selected Manchester over London to be the British representative to bid for the 2000 Summer games. After Manchester's defeat, the BOA said that any future Olympic bid England makes, it would be London the only city they thought had a chance winning an Olympic bid.

I was 6 years old when this happened. I remember seeing it in the morning on TV and being so excited. The olympic torch went passed my house on the day of the opening ceremony. It's a pity we didn't get any photos. My Mum bought a brand new camera. We set it up on the day the torch was going by and the stupid thing didn't work. It was DOA out of the box.

I was very young and don't remember this but I remember the games and it was one of the most exciting times in our country and a great memory of my childhood. I disagree though that people wouldn't get behind it, we still love our sport and Olympic Games so much here. Brasilia had no chance of winning the bid for the 2000 games. In the IOC's evaluation report of all the bidding cities, Sydney had the highest marks when it came to infrastructure, the ability & readiness to host the games, Brasilia had the lowest, citing "the total apparent absence of contact of sport" in their bid plans & the cities substandard facilities. Brasilia is a city that was built from the ground up in 1960.

Hmm, no report from Berlin (although another Today show coverage video shows it). They claimed that they had most of the venues there (many legacy from the 1936 Olympics), but would still needed to build a new aquatics centre, velodrome, arenas and other specific venues. The Germans clearly had too much on their plate at the time of just being 3 years out of Reunification. There were clearly more pressing matters than the symbolic Olympics, even if they claimed that it could be done.

Id like to note the hundreds of homes in Newington that are poorly built and falling apart 20 yrs later. Almost every house has dead BP solar panaels tjhat cost a fortune to replace . If you add in the epic pollution in homebsh bay that was never cleaned up. And the piles of contaminated dirt still there today (those mound loookouts in HBB), and it really destroys the claims they made about the "green games"

Tbf it was the Liberals that got us the Games. The NSW Labor Party (who was useless then and even more useless now) got into office 2 years later and pretty much tried to turn it into their socialist utopia by taking it into their western Sydney heartland. Had Bob Carr never beaten the now late John Fahey in the 1995 NSW state election I somehow doubt the Games would've been predominantly in western Sydney.
