I’ve always been in awe of femur fighters but the one guy that got me into Muay Thai was old golden age footage of Lakhin Wassandasit his muay matt style gravitated to me heavy punches and kicks but he’d throw in a couple of knees and elbows in there it really spoke to me coming from a boxing background I was already ok with the hands I learned rather quickly when studying him Edit: people can change that’s the beauty of life you can see my previous comment about liking the muay matt style advice from close training partners and teachers have indicated to me that I am a muay tae/femur hybrid I was upset for a long time not being heavy handed but if your going through this with your style it’s ok it’s normal don’t be discouraged embrace your gifts physically and mentally and move forward Sylvie says similar in this video about being upset at being unable to adapt to a specific style but finding one she identified with the most on the pads, the heavy bag and in sparring I was told my kicks were fast and very powerful I never took notice of it until I had an in-depth chat with a trainer about my style and struggling to understand what worked for me

I love your parallel with music. As a musician this is something I can relate to. I feel like there are many other parallels to music in Muay Thai beyond style as well. For example: rhythm/tempo, improvisation (sparring), phrasing (combos), call and response (counters), etc. When I practice it feels like I’m tapping into the same parts of my brain that I use for music. Anyway, thanks for the insight and keep up the good work!

I think Luca from Brazil misunderstood the meaning of “style” in Muay Thai. In Muay Thai, the style is “just” a fighting style, i.e. how you conduct the fight and what the startegy. It’s not like in Karate where different styles are actually very different (you cannot fairly put on the same ring a Goju Ryu, Shotokan and Kyokushin)
@sabakimsg5 жыл бұрын
I didn't get that from Luca's question.

Great vid! I really needed to hear this. I'm new to training in Muay thai and was over thinking this. I like all the styles at the moment and using them all in sparring...it just depends on my opponent.
@8limbsUs5 жыл бұрын
That's the way it should be. Just feel for things that feel good to you, find fighters or styles that inspire you, techniques that seem like they suit you. A style will develop on its own.

I am a tall fighter for my weight and my kicks are my best weapons, all of my 8 counts have come from me head kicking my opponent , I love staying at a distance to utilize my body n headkicks and also because I have decent head movement and a long quick jab , so I consider myself a Muay femur style fighter , my Trainer always wants me to push the pressure on and throw hooks and low kicks , he also says I should never move backwards but alot of my favorite Muay Thai fighters are Muay femur and move back when they need to , my trainer is trying to change my style what should I do

Sylvie, I know that posture is super important in Muay Thai scoring, that said, could you see a situation where it would make sense to bend forward at the waist like a western boxer to avoid stikes and create unique striking angles? This would obviously make one super susceptible to knees and would maybe even offer a dominant clinch position “for free,” but I’m just curious if this could be incorporated into a Muay Thai fighter’s arsenal effectively. Thank you for all the amazing content you produce!
@8limbsUs4 жыл бұрын
Lerdsila does this, kind of diving his shoulder into his opponents like a boxer. He doesn't really strike though.

Muay Buek is what in the West we would call "high volume" striking or a pressure fighter. They come forward and like to strike first, aggressive.

Muay Khao is a style which is known for using a lot of devastating knees. The Muay Khao fighters are usually big and strong and they get the opponent's in many clinches and targets knees to the upper body (solar plexus, ribs, head, etc.)
@8limbsUs5 жыл бұрын
"Muay Khao" literally means "knee fighting". To add to the comment above, it's usually contrasted with "Muay Femeu (or spelled "Femeur" sometimes), which is more artful, timing based fighting. It is both a term for fighters that specifically use knees a lot, but can also mean more broadly "forward fighter, pressure fighting, not backing up" as an energy.

Why do I not hear of Muay Sok/elbow fighters much? Do elbows score the least or something? I do Kun Khmer and we use them a lot. Instead of staying in a clinch for a trip or throw. You generally are trying to find a way to slip an elbow when clinched over most other stuff. I do like my coach though. Whenever he shows me something, he will usually show me a few things you could do. Yesterday, we were doing check and return/catch and return drills. Instead of the basic #10 return, he showed me returning with the kick, a knee, or a spinning elbow.
@8limbsUs3 жыл бұрын
Elbows don't score highly unless they have demonstrated effectiveness, lots of cuts or a cut that leads to stoppage. There are fighters who have great elbows but aren't pure "Muay Sok," although some coild be called that, like Yodkhunpon Sitraipum and Muangthai PK Saenchai.

This was a good video Sylvie, and I like the way you guys brought up strict teachers or teachers who are somewhat 1 dimensional in their approach to their athletes.... I would say there is definitely “wrong” ways to do things technique wise, but, I would say you have to look at each individual and how they apply the art... what suits their body style, strengths, weaknesses etc. Great video thanks... I do have one question for you Sylvie... if you are muay keow (sp?) why do you adopt the south paw stance *unless you are fighting a southpaw*... wouldn’t it leave you open to their full range rear roundhouse allowing for a bit easier scoring for your opponent... I would figure crowding their power side roundhouse may be a bit better strategy?
@8limbsUs5 жыл бұрын
It's the opposite, Karuhat switched me to Southpaw exactly because I was an Muay Khao fighter. You use the forward check to shut off the open side, and set up the open side knee. You do crowd the power side by moving into it when cutting off the ring. Also, as a Southpaw fighter you can use the lead elbow to set up the open side knee. This is how Yodkhunpon fought, as a pressure Southpaw knee fighter. Chamuekphet was a devastating Southpaw knee fighter, exploiting that openside knee, as well. You can watch Karuhat deciding to turn me Southpaw here, a 2 hour video www.patreon.com/posts/karuhat-sor-3-to-13300833
@lindsayrae64285 жыл бұрын
That’s an interesting approach, I never thought of it that way, I guess you can check the kick easy enough and employ the rear knee right after which makes sense. Thanks for the reply much appreciated... also I had the pleasure of meeting Andy years ago here in Canada as he brought two female athletes and he was a really nice guy... we visited a lot and I was so sad to see he left us... he really loved the sport and did right by the art in terms of trying to promote it and seemed like such a great person. I know you knew him well and I’m sorry for your loss. Keep good care and keep promoting the art, we need more of this. Thanks

I had a trainer back in the day whom wanted me to be a big puncher (muay mut), but the problem was that I loved to kick and knee. He said that I kick slow and telegraphically, opponent could see it coming from a mile away. Plus I was too big of a person to be kicking, it was a waste of energy. My kauw was no better because I would get nailed every time I get close to use it on anybody. At the end of the day he was mostly right, however, I was still doing what I like in the ring with a little headache...hahaha! I agree you. One just got to do what feel right. There's really no formula here...

Good points. I'm much more naturally inclined to a more dynamic style (more similar to American kickboxing). However, although this is my default style, when I train in a particular club I limit myself to their style/ethos so that I can expand my comfort zone. Now, I still have my American kickboxing default but I have other styles I can bring in to play depending on my opponend - but I generally stay within my prefered style but adapt temporilly when I need to.
