I got in with someone’s IT training class and during my interview I act like that was my job by describing what I was doing in that class as if I was working. Basically I faked it till I made it. Went from making $25 an hour doing physical security. to $73 an hour. Just scaled from there. You just have to network and finesse your way through the rest of the journey.

Interviews are easy to get in IT. Just a matter of what’s on your resume and the demand. I’ve notice once you get your first tech role. You really don’t have to go looking for jobs because they’ll come to you especially if your cleared.

@@shantierpoole8450 Your resume should reflect you have working technology and working knowledge of what the Job description is asking for. The first step in getting to the hiring manager for a government position is 1: A computer-generated system is looking for keywords in your resume. 2: Once it is flags enough of the keywords, your resume is sent to a government employee who has zero knowledge of IT. 3: She will try to match the job description verbatim to your resume. 4: Once she sends the hiring manager the resumes she thinks look like the job description, there will be a panel of IT people in that department that will grade each resume based on the job description. (Always make your resume look and sound precisely like the job descriptions and always through in the new technology you are working with) 5: The five or six people that are selected will do a panel interview. You will get graded on how you answer the question( The difference between the government technical interview and the private sector is that the government will stick closely to the job description, whereas the private sector can be all over the place. 6: We will grade based on your technical skills. Unfortunately, we can't hire the person with the best attitude ( That sucks). The person with the highest points will get the position. The person with the second-highest score in several cases since I have been with the government got the job because a person couldn't pass a background check or the process was too long for them to wait until they found another job.

I wish I would have known that you could negotiate with HR during hiring. I got offered a GS-11 IT Specialist position with Customs and Border Protection and took it. It was already 10k more than I was getting paid. But two guys hired after me negotiated and got GS-12's. I got promoted to gs12 after a year but I definitely had the experience. Now I'd love to become a gs13 or higher. I'd love to make 150k but I don't have any certs. I have years of on the job experience and can do my job very well but no certs. So I don't know if that will prevent me from going higher? I should get my security + cert.
