That last trombone glissando triad is pure magic. I figure while I’m here, I may as well share a memory involving this piece. This was part of our repertoire my senior year of high school. Our trombone section was…not the strongest section of the band. There were plenty of cut-ups there, and they got non-stop grief from our director all year. This piece really pushed them - particularly those pedal B-flats about 2/3 of the way in. They gradually improved over the year. During our spring concert - last of the year - as we’re in the final measures of this piece, the trombone section hits that last glissando triad with absolute perfection. Seeing my director smile as they nailed that chord was just priceless. The band finished the last couple measures, and our director pointed at the trombone section to stand and be acknowledged by the audience. I gotta say, I was proud of them at that moment, too.

Nice, my 8ty grade director had just enough confidence in us to play it. While we were learning is, one of the other directors (trombonist) told us to not hold back and just blast it.😅 We got second place for honor band

True story...Clifton Williams lived in Miami, and his daughters Sarah (powerful F horn player) and Helen (Flute/Base flute/piccolo) were in my band( I play F horn). He worked tirelessly with us on this piece. We go to State Contest, and of course, it was played beautifully. Most band members were serious musicians and went on to major in music and today still have careers in music(my 2 brothers 1 of who played that year, are pro-level musicians). We got all top marks of course. But the kicker...in the comments was written," this piece was played very well, but we do not think it was played as the composer intended. Now, that comment totally made our day!! The judges had absolutely no idea the composer worked with us on every tiny detail. We laughed, and laughed and that bus trip home was the most memorable ever! We all tell the story even today, 53 years later!😂 Now this was BEFORE CW was eventually considered to be one of the best composers of the 20th Century! Rest in Peace, Professor Williams.🙏♥️📯

I want to arrange this for a country music-type ensemble. Keep the clarinets, combine trumpets with guitar, replace trombones with slide guitar and flutes with pedal. Perhaps these are just the mad ramblings of a former band student now awake at 4:00 am, haunted by bizarre musical ideas reminiscent of some howdy doody nightmare. Or perhaps it’s not. But it totally is.

@@cnner1997 What are you talking about? We're in 5/4 time, and in the 3rd measure of rehearsal number B, there are two eighth notes missing in the piccolo, flute, and oboe parts, clearly shown on this score in the video. I know this because the same ornamental phrase occurs just two measures before B. Yeah, its a typo on this score, and it may seem a little petty to point it out, but mind you, I wrote this comment 3 years ago when I was an undergrad, knee deep in school work, and nearing graduation for my BA in Music Education (which I now have). I thought it appropriate at the time to point out this mistake. Clearly, those upper winds in the 3rd measure of B are played with the two 8th note rests in mind: one on beat 4 and one on the + of beat 5. They're not there though. That's all I was pointing out.
