Saw the scherzo was second, and did not go further. Too much like the first movement, so keep them apart. Seemingly Mahler came to a similar conclusion (possibly in rehearsals), because the scherzo was ALWAYS third when he conducted it in concert! 0:30

One of the most passionate and powerful symphonies by Mahler, rendered unfulfilled! Where was the famous “ Mahler hammer”? It struck only once, at least should have been twice, if not three times!

I agree, it's a beautiful version but it lacks a lot of bass. Maybe three or four more double basses would not have been too much.

Interesting interpretation. Very punctionel…functionel in a way. Straight forward, unsentimental. Nice approach. Much easier access to this masterpiece instead of a more „fluid“ interpretations like other orchestras. A Little to slow like all modern Mahler interpretations in my opinion.

What a dreary, slow, lightweight first movement. Of all symphonies, the movement should be one of grim pounding- but this conductor makes it like an afternoon stroll in the park. And the cowbells in the mountain vision scene ( 13: 22) are practically inaudible.

It's pretty much the perfect speed, given Mahler's marking, and faster than some of the best recordings, including Chailly's. I think he has the measure of this piece, a wonderful account.

bof.... the best mahler's symphony are the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4 and 5. after the 5, it's difficult to appreciate his music.....

I remember when i first have listened this symphony, and to say that: "it's too modern to me". To first listen the opening of the first movement and feel like a thousand knifes ripped my heart appart. Is quite strange to now look at this symphony and now appreciate, to love what once terrified me. It had actually became my favorite of all symphonies, because it still in all that tragic destiny, still carries such an energy, such will to triumph and to love, that even the finale and that end, still sound to me beautiful, and life-affirming, as if it all was justified and self-fullfiling, with meaning.
